Action packed crime thrillers

With Public Enemies opening last night, I thought we could look at some other great crime flicks from years past.

My first choice, Year Of the Dragon. Mickey Rourke is bad ass to the max in this movie.

Bad Lieutenant

Very hardcore, I think it was NC-17 when it came out.

Also saw Public Enemies Friday morning. It was a very good movie. Not quite as good as HEAT, but I don't think that movie can ever be beat. Public Enemies was very close, though. I agree that the Little Bohemia shootout was quite intense. The gunfire was REALLY loud!

The movie was very good and Depp as usual commanded the movie. There were a couple of things I wish Mann had added into the film however. 1. Dillinger robbed lots of banks, but some of the clever ways he did it were not portrayed in the film such as the gang pretending to be a movie company scouting locations for a bank robbery scene and then just driving off with the cash, 8)  or posing as a bank a sale rep for a bank alarm system and talking his way into the bank manager sharing all the bank's security systems with him as he was scouting places to rob. Another thing I didn't get is the "lady in red". She is legendary in the Dillinger story as the prostitute who set him up and was wearing a red dress when Dillinger was shot in front of the Biograph Theatre, So why did Mann have her wearing a white blouse and orange skirt? I don't get it. Finally, In real life, some of the crowed actually dipped scraps of cloth or pieces of their clothing in Dillinger's blood as a keepsake after he was gunned down. I think that might have been compelling to show.

Contrary to popular belief, the lady in red really did wear an orange skirt. From the street lighting, it looked red. I totally agree with you that Michael Mann could have done a little bit more. The bank robbery scenes were short. Also, I was waiting to see people dip into Dillinger's blood as well but it never happened. That's why I said it wasn't quite as good as HEAT. Otherwise though, it was a very good movie. I went into the movie theatre with my expectations very high and they were about 80-85% met.

Public Enemies was sold out last night, so had to settle for Taking of Pelham 123... very lackluster. Laughable script, shitty character development/motivations, garbage plot, not too mcuh suspense or action... another one of those ones where Hollywood just slapped 3 or 4 big name actors on the front billboard and hoped to watch the $s roll in. Zzzz

Well, at least he looked badass. Was the original any good? I haven't been able to find any one who has seen it.

No, it should never have been made but everyone was throwing out slop in the 70's, trying to capture some of the magic that Pacino was finding in Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico.
