It's funny - as soon as he sings "...he took the midnight train going anywhere", I always expect to hear him say "Neal..." to bring on the guitar intro. I've been listening to Journey's 'Escape' DVD playing while I'm on the computer and the live version is becoming more familiar.

That's funny....I did the same thing...I have the live Escape CD in my car and that's the one I listen to most...I am always waiting for SP to say Neal at that point of the song too.
 me too!... I love the way he calls out Neals name then Neal's guitar sounds like a fast moving train.

Me too and when Arnel sings it and does not say "Neal" it sounds like he forgot.

It is obvious to me why Arnel doesnt say Neal. I do like the fact that he holds the note over that part however.

Pretty close to the Anyway you want it but you can hear some intruments on occasion. The crowd sound is because the source was the rock band game.

I checked and there are no more. Yet.

His voice cracks in the 1st verse. I never heard it before and the piano covered it up. Tape was expensive back then I guess.

The only person I have heard that I would compare with Perry is Sam Cooke, who was obviously major influence #1. Sam Cooke could do things Perry couldn't, but Perry had more range. As to who is better, I don't know.

If you've never heard Cooke, please listen to Lost and Looking, from the Night Beat album. Forget the pop stuff that made the radio. THIS was the real Sam Cooke--and probably one of the best vocals I have ever heard by any singer.

Like what? Please elaborate. I can't think of one thing, based on what's been recorded by both.

That's a powerful song. I just recently discovered the Night Beat album. Definitely a true representation of the man's pure, raw talent. I would say that Sam brought more of a gospel feel to his singing. That was part of Sam's background and upbringing. This is of course not a slight at all to Perry, but rather just a distinctive flavor to Sam's approach that you don't hear as much in Perry's delivery. They are both, in my opinion, untouchable.

I thought about him a lot watching that MJ tribute, because so many of those performers like Lionel Ritchie and Steve Wonder are probably 60 or so and sound fantastic and are still performing and are a treat to see perform. I thought I wonder if Perry really misses it and for whatever reason just wouldn't do it all these years, but deep down would love to.

The MJ memorial was not about quality performance and it really pisses me off that people were slamming certain performers for sounding off. There were at a funeral ? Duh ?!?

Anyway, in regards to age Stevie Wonder blew my socks off. I had no idea he had that left in him. Just amazing and moving. Him and Jermain teared me up a bit and I dont know why. I am not an MJ fan really. I love a few tunes with Billie Jean still being my fav but damn, the whole thing was very classy and moving.

I will say it again and again. Perry isnt singing because he isnt happy with his own voice. I do not think we will ever see a new release and touring is out. His speaking voice sounds better these days and not so hoarse everytime he speaks. Julie Andrews has vocal surgery back in 97 and it RUINED her voice. Her speaking voice was raspy and her laugh rattled just like Perry. It was many years before she sang live again and it was never the same. I have to wonder if something like this happened to Steve. I think she went to the same doctor that Steve is rumored to have seen and had some of her voice restored with some new laser tech. She did sing live this year I think. She sounded great but had help for the high stuff. Back in 94 she was still singing at about the same level as when she did sound of music. Not exactly the same but still in that league. The operation to remove some nodes killed her voice. There is a Barbra Walters interview on you tube with her where she talks in detail about it but be warned that Walters could have used a bit more class in her interviewing technique there.

I believe if he could he would. He seems to get so emotional when asked about the old days and I wonder if it is because he knows he can not do what he loves the most. We may never know.

But then he always seems to leave the door open when he is interviewed....why? I mean if he is done...why not say I am done....I just don't get that part of it....but I am just a fan and I guess we may never know as you have said.

You're probably right on Steve Perry.

Re Stevie Wonder, wow, I agree. He performed with just a piano, not backing music, and was fantasic.

Actually every performer was awesome. Every time they're playing Mariah on TV I go in the room to see it thinking it's Michael and it's her. She sounds just like him in the very beginning. Someone on TV said people are saying she didn't hit some notes but that she was the only performer who couldn't be there in time to rehearse but still wanted to come and perform. I thought she was great.
Jennifer Hudson, such a powerful performance with the choir.
Lionel and Usher fantastic. The ending was amazing.
But Jermaine was the standout for me. His voice was so, so beautiful and knowing that was Michael's favorite song and the meaning behind the words and that it was his brother performing was a tearjerker for me.

I edited in some more thoughts. I always do that. Why doesnt Steve just say he is done ? I dont know. Maybe he has been waiting for his voice to rebound to a point where he is happy with it which would be a plausable explanation as to why he always leaves it open.

Sadly, I'm starting to think you may be right. I'm the eternal optimist, but I fear we may not ever see anything get released again. We know he's been recording, but there has to be a reason that we're not hearing anything. You know if I'M saying this, I'm really bummed out and am praying that I'm wrong.

Any buzz I was hearing has quieted down to silence. I guess we can just keep hoping, but my We'll See is almost gone. Oh well, we have many years of magical stuff to listen to and should consider ourselves lucky. I'm just glad SP seems to be happy in the interviews we've heard.

Mariah apologized fro her performance yesterday but I don't think it was necessary. The emotion was knocking down her ability to sing and being first up, with the casket right there, I thought she did the best she could.

Madsplash that was why we said not to get your hopes up too much. But you meant well, I am sure of it. We may hear from him someday, or maybe not. But with so many false alarms, folks want concrete assurances before saving up for the release of anything. And you can see why now I think?

WTH? I've been thinking it's July and if MadSplash's prediction back when that it was September release it wasn't looking good b/c of hearing nothing. But now MS is giving up almost completely? Don't give up. Maybe it's just quieted down, b/c it will be released next year and he's being his perfectionist self and stalling. But I never thought there would be a tour, just an album.

God, I never thought I would be consoling MadSplash.

His speaking voice sounds better these days and not so hoarse everytime he speaks. Julie Andrews has vocal surgery back in 97 and it RUINED her voice. It was many years before she sang live again and it was never the same. I have to wonder if something like this happened to Steve.

I believe if he could he would. He seems to get so emotional when asked about the old days and I wonder if it is because he knows he can not do what he loves the most. We may never know.

Sadly, I'm starting to think you may be right. I'm the eternal optimist, but I fear we may not ever see anything get released again. We know he's been recording, but there has to be a reason that we're hearing anything.

Wow - It is a day in MR History....I never thought I would hear those words from you....

See we both have been reformed.....we have helped each other....BTW I will see you at the meeting

I hope I'm wrong more than anyone. Maybe we'll still all get a great surprise. Who knows? The man can do whatever he wants, he's sure as hell earned that. We're lucky to have what we have from him. If he gives us more, great, if not, that's ok too.
