Not sure about that...
The consensus during the 2003 Main Event tour, even from some Journey fans, was that Styx was upstaging Journey.
Some blamed it on the fact that Journey was the last act of the night on a busy triple bill.
Crowds would leave early, and even Cain mentioned they weren't used to going out late.
For whatever reason, they didn't *bring it* nightly.
It was kinda like how during the Def tour, more people ended up talking about the opening act, (the Soto-energized lineup), than the actual headliner.
So they were saying Journey wasn't giving the effort, or was Augeri's voice already starting to deteriorate? I'm thinking he had been with the group for four years already when this tour took place.
I saw the Journey, REO, Styx line-up front row center, and I have to say...Journey even got trumped by REO! They were by FAR the weakest band that night. The entire band (not just Augeri) were just going through the motions, and they were boring as hell! My wife said the exact same thing before I even mentioned it to her, and she's not even reallt a fan of Styx.  Very cool concert that night though, and it was probably my second favorite concert I've ever been to. :D

Is this true?

You're trying to verify if Styx would beat Journey in a fight?

I'm trying to find out if Styx was a better band than Journey in concert back then.

The question was if Journey could beat Styx in a fight. Deen gave a humorous answer to a funny question. No where does the question or DC's answer imply that Styx is a better band than Journey back in 2003, when they last toured together.

What about Augeri's voice, how was it then? By analysing the video from the Belium show this year, I'm thinking there's a possibilty of Arnel's voice to start cracking by the time Journey gets to Kentucky in August. Even breaking up the shows and stepping down isn't going to change this from happening IMO.
Thats why I'm curious to know when Augeri had hit the wall vocally.

I would agree that Styx stole the show on that tour. Journey really went through the motions that year.

I agree completely .... Journey for the most part was boring on that tour... I saw the Dallas and Worcester(Boston) shows.

REO killed them...I was 24th row in Dallas and they blew the roof off of the place. (The newspaper review agreed)

Styx was ok....But they deserved to be in the opening slot.

I did get to hear State Of Grace live in Worcester so that was a plus...

I enjoyed Armageddon -- didn't think it was a bad watch at all, but I liked Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys much better. Would much rather have heard more of Journey in the movie that another cheesy Aerosmith ballad.

I watched Armageddon again a few weeks ago strictly to search for "Remember Me". Couldn't find it! Now I know why...

Would have fit in great had they decided to feature it more prominently. Take out one of those Aerosmith songs and there you go.

This is plausable....Neal stands tall enough to have a perfect jab at the average male's nutsack. I'm sure all he'd have to do is lunge a few well placed jabs at JY and Gowan, and those guys would be bent over singing soprano for years to come. Who needs Deyoung? Just call up Nick Shlong for a few slugs to the cock...

The band (Journey)was in fact just trying to get through the show. Augeri was getting taped assistance, but not 100%. He definitely had help. The Band was terrible. They had to follow REO who played side one if Hi Infidelity true to album form, then Twigs set the place on fire. Augeri was awful, cracking and breaking and the entire band was looking at that red digital clock on the mixer's board and hoping it would reach 0 as fast as possible. people definitely left early, and I'd say that 80% of the reviews gave Journey failing marks, and said they were the weakest of the three. That says something because musically, they are obviously the best band, but their effort was dismal. You can teach music and achieve talent, but you cannot teach effort or heart.

You're a god damn wizard with words, man. :)

On a side note: I bet Journey is hard to beat in a fight. Neal have allways been pretty beefed up, and so has Cain (even though the only thing he works out is his bicep). Valory could make some funny faces I guess... But not much of a fighter. Deen has ADD, so he can take a few punches. Augeri would just wiggle, dodge and tap dance the hell out of any fight - and finish the fight off with that crazy fly kick he did on the stegway at the end of the 2001 dvd.

One of THE best songs to come out of the Augeri-era that SHOULD have been played much more than it was. :x

I saw that tour quite a few times that year and I can tell you (personally) that it had NOTHING to do with Augeri or his performance per se. The band AS A WHOLE simply didn't bring their "A" game... Period!

I can't comment on REO because I'm still trying to purge Cronin from my memory during that tour  , but the difference with Styx was that they were energized by the show and the audience every single night and got off on the crowd's reaction. It was as if the more audience response they got, the more it fueled them to excellence. Journey, to me (and I still loved them at this point, so don't even bother trying to incinuate that I had issues with them then) seemed to be far too laid back and comfortable in their set... No hunger. No drive. There was no passion, fire, energy, or excitement coming from them, like there was with Styx. To me, it was if I had just witnessed a fresh, new exciting band, that was just breaking onto the scene (Styx), and that they were opening up for a classic band from back in the day (Journey), who behaved like they could simply sit back and rest on their laurels because the audience would still love them no matter what they did.

Several years later, I witnessed the opposite with Foreigner opening for Styx. It was the first set of shows that Foreigner did after Kelly Hansen joined them and Foreigner blew Styx away effortlessly! It think it's a difference of a band wanting to please the audience instead of themselves and, back then, Foreigner had an awful lot to prove after they replaced Lou Gramm.

Yep, Remember Me was supposed to go over the credits. Yes, the band got screwed...would've been HUGE to close the movie, would've been huge to have a video with just scenes from the movie...no band shots. Would've helped the public get over the absence of Perry.

On the Main Event Tour Joureny was definately the worst of the bill. But at the show I went to the ONE highlight of Journey's set was Steve Augeri. I know he struggled late in the tour, but I wonder if he was still okay at my gig (don't remember how early/late in the tour it was). Steve was all over the place and even came down in the crowd a little...not like Glen Burtnik did, but it was cool to see him truly connecting with the audience. UNLIKE the rest of the band...
