Tho at times it feels he's doing something of a Perry homage, I like the swagger and the "whoa-oh-whoa" Sam Cooke-isms.

Why? Just b/c he helped originate it? I love Perry's WITS version but Arnel's just as much b/c they're both so different. And when I used to play Journey and it hit Perry's WITS, everyone, for the most part, would say skip that song. Many don't like his more effeminate version (I love it), and since hearing Arnel now like the song b/c of his vocals on the song.

Comparisons to the original only make sense if its done differently. These aren't. When Perry sings WITS, He' not emulating Fleischman, he's fitting the song around his vocal style. That' not the case with JSS, Augeri or Pineda. They have to copy his version. It's not like Mariah covering OA where the melody and music is tweaked, these guys are having to sing straight up covers. The songs are not being put to acoustics settings or being slowed down or emphasizing different areas of the song over the original. They are copying Perry to the best of their ability as he is the gold standard.
As far as people having problems with Perry's effeminate voice, the numbers say more people are fine with it or than not, WITS gets played every day on classic rock station and the DJ's sem to always give praise to SPs soaring tenor. The song was also on the Hot 100 chart so it seems to have gone over quite well. The many who don't like Perry's version are obviously out numbered 100 fold in real life beyond this forum.
To add to that, all pre Escape albums are multiplatinum and Captured is continiouslly ranked as one of the best live albums ever released despite all these albums featuring Perry using his his high head voice on almost every tune.
I'm not deriding the other singers as they are doing what they are paid to do, present those songs as they originally sounded when they became hits. Journey is not paying them to mess with the formula that makes up the band's legacy sound. They are not going to "own these songs" as people say. Create something unique to yourself, then you can "own it" otherwise you're just providing a cleaned up counterfiet at best.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but fortunately, I have sales numbers, Continued radio spins of the classics despite alternate versions being available and the continious crowd sizes at their live shows, no matter if it be SA, AP or JSS singing the songs in the same manner as the originals.
