OT | Cover of My Favorite Song To Sing..

Hey all - Still working on tunes with John Spinks and myself, but I'm always ready to fire up the mic if inspiration hits for a good cover to share until I can begin putting out some of these original tunes. In that spirit, here's a cover I recorded tonight of one of my favorite songs ever to sing. This is "I Can't Make You Love Me," and I hope I've done the song justice.

Dude, how did you do that? It sounded like you were one of those singers from the 50's, singing to a modern arrangement, very unique.
I have to say no guy sings it like GM but your version was great. I have no problem adding that to my listening collection.

Thanks GB....That's Logic Pro. I made up my own vocal chain and I am going to try to stick with it to have a consistent sound...But I'm glad you like it. And no, there is no one that can touch George Michael on that song. Bonnie got me to fall in love with it, and it means something different coming from her, but George puts his old soul into it and it's simply amazing.

Too much vibrato. Too much compression. With the right producer who knows how to help you dial in that "professional recorded sound", it would be magic. You're always on the fringe of perfection.

Well, I'm on the fringe of thanking you for the backhanded compliment!

To be honest, I am just singing...I don't hear any more or less vibrato than most other singers out there, but I'm not really focused on that. There could indeed be too much compression though. I like my esses and tees....

Yesssssssssssssss I hear a lot of emphasis on the 't' of 'don't' and 'fight' and 'heart' and 'won't' etc and the 's's etc as well.

I really rate your voice, Jeremey but this recording sounds a little too echoey. It spoils your voice. Did you use a 'pop screen' in front of the mike? If not, you really need to on songs like this. But I'm not attempting to tell you your job.

Not one of my faves of yours, mate, sorry.

I do hear a Steve Perry-esque tone in your voice on this though and that cannot be bad, can it?

Susie, I do use a pop screen to record with, I think you were hearing the multipressor plug in in Logic, which overemphasized those plosives.

I've actually uploaded a different mix of this song, and dialed back the effects. Minimal reverb, no compression....

Check that out - It will likely be less distracting than the other mix.

Hey man,

NIce work dude. Vibrato is in the ear of the beholder isnt it ? I hear vibrato that is right for the song. As far as the recording and production of your vocal track ? Fucking pristine !!! Clean, clear, and VERY detailed. I gotta say it but it reminds me of the FTLOSM production but warmer. PLease do tell what mic and preamp you have there !

Great work man. I would love to sing through that rig !

I am singing into a MXL V69 microphone directly into a MOTU Ultralite interface, which goes straight into Logic. I really, really like the MXL V69 mic. It's a pretty hefty mic with a big diaphragm...I've used tons of studio mics before settling on this one, and I'm really happy with it, plus at under $500 it's a pretty great value as well....

Great work... I love that you're hanging out in your midrange virtually the whole time. I haven't heard that side of your voice too often. Great stuff though.. and I agree with LD, I didn't notice any distracting vibrato and the vocal sound is KILLER. Very airy yet clean and crisp

Sounds great man!... actually I'm diggin Missing You... well done!!.

The only suggestions I'd have is that the voice could have been further up in the mix... and actually I didn't hear enough compression... certain parts of the vocal dipped below the rest of the instrumentation... so I couldn't hear the voice adequately...

Ever try parallel compression on the voice? Seems to work wonders on raising the vocal floor, making the overall vocal "clearer" while the original, uncompressed track provides dynamics and sibilance.

One other suggest... tube preamp in your signal chain... an all digital signal chain will sound good.. when I added a tube preamp to my vocal signal chain... the results were nite and day... its almost a "I didn't know what I was missing " moment when you hear the playback and compare... the differences are subtle until you really listen.

Your voice is so sonically similar to Perrys that you have a great reference point for what mics already work well. This article talks about what Perry used... http://www.3daudioinc.com/3db/showthread.php?t=243 ... with the following post by "Klaus"... good info to know...

Steve Perry used one of two Neumann M49s which I sold him and modified, pretty soon after he joined the band. (Roy Segal of Fantasy Records in Berkeley had made the initial contact.)

He kept using these M49 models for most of the seminal and multi-platinum selling Journey disks, as well as for some of his solo work during and after Journey.
As far as I remember, one of the mics was equipped with an M7 capsule, the other with a K47/49.

Nice Jeremey, stellar world class vocals right there. Seriously, I wouldn't change a thing, and I think there A LOT of guys in "certain" famous bands that could learn a lot by listening to you.

I'm really interested on what type of vocal warm ups you do before performing, just amazing mate.
