Here's another review of the Reno show http://vvestfirzka.livejournal.com/132092.html
Credit goes to Gigi of AP' site.

And as if the evening could get any better...
Arnel Pineta  is a total stick of dynamite! I swear, he sounds more like Steve Perry than Mr. Perry himself! Arnel and the rest of the band kept the audience pumped. Neal on guitars, Ross on bass, Jonathan on keyboards/guitar, and Deen... wow, Deen! I'm still amazed at your mad skills! Playing a double bass drum set with umpteen cymbals and tom toms... AND SINGING! Dood, amazing!! All of the guys in this band are extremely talented, and they yet again did not disappoint a frenzied crowd.

You know Chubby...nothing against you, but when I read things like "Arnel sounds more like Steve Perry, than Steve does himself" it just pisses me off, and turns me AWAY from Arnel. :? This woman is obviously a fan (and there's nothing wrong with that), but when I read something from someone like her it just irks me. Of COURSE this came from Arnel's site...Can't say I blame him for trying to get the PR.

I was and still am a Pineda fan, but really only for his new songs with Journey...not with him trying to mimick Steve Perry in a heavily accented vocal delivery. It never bothered me much when I first heard him, but it's really gotten to me after all this time. It's like he mouths the words, but almost sounds like he doesn't even comprehend the lyrics to what he sings.

This is of course just my opinion, but I'm just saying! I AM seriously excited about their next album though, and I'll buy it on day one with a smile on my face.

Well Jim, they're only playing two new songs now, hard for Arnel to get sperarated from Perry when they're not playing new material. I would think it might grate on AP a little too. He can't have his name said without Perry's. When he was in the Zoo he was just plain Arnel, now he's the guy who sounds like Perry. The thing is having seen Perry live four times with Journey, I can say Arnel doesn't sound like him, especially the Perry I heard on the Escape tour. I'm sure he's fine with it 90% of the time but there have to be some days when AP wakes up and wonders how he ended up living in someone elses legacy instead of his own. I'm sure Kelly Hanson feels the same way. The difference is Kelly doesn't have songs to promote that are his own while Arnel has. Unfortunately Pineda is geting the same treatment as Augeri did after Arrival. Push your own music the first tour and then go back to being the guy who sounds like Steve Perry the next tour.
Obviously Arnel doesn't get to pick the setlist but seeing TDTWT, WIN and WDILYL getting slowly forgotten about has to sting.

You bring up some good points, and I can't say that I know what that'd be like. On the flip-side though, maybe he feels blessed to have such a kick-ass job verses what he was doing at the clubs with the Zoo.

Ward, you're being a little hard on the beave tonight. This is a Journey forum, so anything Journey should be able to be talked about here. So Chubby is a fan. He can't help it of he gets excited when he sees positive things posted about AP and Journey. His post is pretty benign compared to what some of the SP loons post around here. I'd rather see something positive posted about the current lineup, rather than read people having the same Perry debates day after day.

Granted, the AP sounds more like SP than SP shit is getting a bit old. Now about the magic......

I can't imagine what she will say. But she said she thought she was going to cry it not being Steve up there. I thought why bother if you think you're going to cry with it not being Steve Perry. How can you even be satisfied right off the bat.

Well, let's be brutally honest. I love Arnel to death, but Neal and Jonathan are forcing him to be Steve Perry. The antics, the clothes, everything. Perry never ran all over the stage like Arnel, but Perry had better stage presence. Back in the 80's, it was Steve Perry as the front man. Now it's Neal and Jonathan. It's never really a good thing when the lead singer is in 3rd place.

You have me totally confused since I don't see that at all. It looks to me like Arnel acts and wears what he wants and the rest of the guys support him on and off stage. They are letting him be the frontman. Am I misisng something?

The clothes? What in the world? Arnel has his own style which is totally different than Perry's. What antics? Re being a frontman, I guess it is all perception. I found him to be a great frontman when I saw him. He definitely was not in third place on the stage.

It's very strange that we are born with a pair of eyes but every once in awhile someone sees something that the rest of us don't see. Bottom line is this: The band could care less what some rabidly obsessed throwbacks think. All they care about is the fact that they are out there doing what they love, playing their music and entertaining people. Having seen clip after clip of fans having fun....I think it's a worthy and relevent venture. This place does NOT represent the entire bank of Journey fans. :D

It appears the magic is finding someone that is able to bring Steve Perry back to the band. And every review further validates that. It's about the guy who sounds like Steve Perry and makes you believe that time has gone backward and Separate ways is back in the Top 10 again. Is that a good thing for Journey, I suppose so. Is it good For Perry, of course. His name is getting more notice than it has in years, especially when someone wants to talk about DSB. he is the first band member they run to. Is it good for Arnel? Well, he is getting paid handsomely and he has always said that it nothing more then a job to him. Going by Chubby's signature he seems to have comfortably resigned himself to the fact that he will always have Perry's shadow looming around him, so yes, I guess it's good for him also. So yes, Ross has a valid point about there being magic in the air when you look at all those factors combined.

Though, playing only two songs from the last four albums does make it seem that this magic is very time specific.

It doesn't have to, it only need represent what the members think. No need for a flagging feature here to censure dissent like they have on the official site. I admit, we are probably missing out on having things like Journey Jewelry offered to us with a favorable discount but alas, those are the sacrifices we just have to make.

Although I am an avid fan of Arnel, I am not trying to only promote Arnel but the band as a whole, but so far since last year I never found a review about the band that did not have any comparison between Arnel and Perry.

I am posting all the reviews, even the twits only because this is a Journey site. I see so many non Journey related threads that are openly embraced by everyone so I did not think that there will be a problem. I see threads that maligned and ridiculed Arnel where very few people defended him so I never thought that the posting of positive reviews will be a big deal.

I have no intention of offending anybody and if I did, apologize.

Btw, I want to put a disclaimer, if you see a concert thread and you see my name, that means I either I posted a positive review or youtube vids, so I please think twice before you click. I am trying to represent the current Journey line up. Thanks for your understanding.

You bring up some good points, and I can't say that I know what that'd be like. On the flip-side though, maybe he feels blessed to have such a kick-ass job verses what he was doing at the clubs with the Zoo.

Like I said, I think he's great, but when people say he's better than Perry... OKAY!

You sound more like Jonathan Cain than Jonathan Cain.

He survived a school fire. Can you find him? He was in room 101...hey, that was the special ed room# at my high school.

Later he wrote and sang a song about it in remembrance of those who perished. I was touched.
