Me playing my favorite cover song intro's...

Postby G.I.Jim » Tue Jul 28, 2009 2:24 am

Hey everyone,

I was just thinking about it this morning, and I don't think any of you have really heard me playing any cover songs. I thought it might be fun just to play a few of my favorite song intros. There aren't any vocals, and they are all short. I just wanted to do them for fun to see what you think. And YES... they're just teases of the songs.

I'm working on original music this morning, so I didn't want to spend much time on them. They would DEFINITELY sound better if I spent more time on them, so you'll have to cut me some slack here. :D

I hope you like them.

Here's "Mother Father"

"Man Against The World"

And finally... "Hard To Say I'm Sorry"

Per your request Deb... to bad you can't hear it!   I even threw in a couple of vocal lines for you. I just realized that the tempo's a little slow, but oh well! I've gotta get some ORIGINAL work done now. I hope you like it.

Mother, Father is one of my all-time favorite songs, Journey or not.

You did a fabulous job with it!

Thank you. Like I said, I just recorded these really quickly this morning so they're just rough versions that aren't perfect. I agree with you about the song... one of my all-time favorites! I absolutely LOVE the chord structure and melody of it. In a way, "What I Needed" has the same feeling and movement in it. It's my favorite song off of Revelation. :D I hope they have more like it in the next album.

Hey Deb, thanks! Yeah, that's my shitty vocal in there.  I just threw it in there. I spent about 20 minutes on the song, then went over the vocals once and recorded it. NOT my best work, but I love working on covers. I should spend more time on them and try to get them closer to the original recordings. I have thought about re-recording a bunch of those 80's songs for karaoke, but I don't know what kind of a market there is out there? Anyway, thanks for the compliment. I think you're the only one who liked them.

I love all those songs, esp. Man Against The World and Hard To Say I'm Sorry.

This is one guitarist who wishes he would have at least started on the piano... definitely the true gateway instrument, imo

Yep, that's why this boy works with other vocalists! :D   BTW, I feel the same way about guitars that you do with keyboards. I would KILL to be able to play some kick-ass guitar riffs! A lot of the songs I get in my head are very guitar oriented, but I don't have any way to get them out without sitting in the same room with a guitarist. Alex and I work back and forth okay, but it's normally just keyboard oriented songs that I write, and then he adds guitars to it. It's not the same as a guitar driven song. Maybe we'll get together one day soon!

Not true. I liked them as well. Great vocals on the last one, bro. Don't sell yourself short. You're very talented & these little snippets proved that. Not to say that your original stuff is bad b/c it's not. It's just that those of us who aren't familiar with your original stuff don't have anything to compare it to.... meaning we don't know what the songs are supposed to sound like & so it's hard to gauge whether or not they're accurate. On the other hand, we're all familiar with Mother Father & I Want To Know What Love Is & so we know what they are supposed to sound like, so when you posted your recordings of them, that gives the listener an "aha" moment --- b/c we can equate your rendition of those songs to the original versions & it's obvious at that point just how talented you are.

Thanks Jason, I really appreciate that. I don't know why, but I think I sound better on covers than I do my own songs. Especially if I spend some time on them and get them sounding right. They seem easier to play for some reason. Most of them are much more advanced than what I play on originals though, so I'm not sure whay that is? Maybe it's because I know exactly how they're supposed to sound, verses figuring something out on my own.. I guess that's why. Thanks though!

 OK, let's hear some Mr Big then. :D

Per your request Deb... to bad you can't hear it!   I even threw in a couple of vocal lines for you. I just realized that the tempo's a little slow, but oh well! I've gotta get some ORIGINAL work done now. I hope you like it.

Do they have any keyboard oriented songs? I can't cover acoustic/electic guitar songs. :(

Sorry, no can do. I can't even think of one. EM's the only key's guy in Mr Big and he's too busy singing. :) One of my fave early EMB, beautiful piano and vocals...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8PdXztIiUY

:D Thanks! I haven't played or recorded any cover tunes in a LONG time until today. I just did it to try to get me motivated to write some new originals... it didn't work.  What are some of your favorite songs?
