I didn't know that they were not respected. It seems that his peers have always stated that Schon was underrated. Like he should be getting more kudo's than what he does. Perry gave him top honors. I wonder who Schon would say was the musician that he got the most out of working with? He would be dishonest if he didn't admit to Perry. In my opinion, his best and most memoriable work is with Perry/Journey.

Schon is a talent for sure, but think about it. He is almost never put in a top 20 guitar list. When he plays fast it becomes blurry, sloppy. He tends to be too dramatic when playing. His slower bending and emotional work is top notch, as his remembrance for notes and keys.

As to who he would say he got the most out of working with? I would like to ask him that. I did ask him about Perry on that one night in Beantown. Aside from all the Perry disses, and there were tons, he did say "the motherfucker was never out of key." Who knows? He might say Cain now. Good question to ask him.

Neal trying to shred these days leaves a lot to be desired. To me, Dream after Dream really showed him at his finest. He was totally under control on that album, not trying to outfinger Eddie Van Halen or pretending he's the next B.B. King. Just clean, precise axe work on that release.

Neal makes plenty of top guitar lists among real guitar players, not just magazines embarrassed to admit Journey was good. Despite all of Neal's memorable Journey moments, they are not a band known for hard-rocking guitar because most of the big hits didn't have Neal showing half of what he could do. Hell, on some he was barely even there... anyone playing for a year or even less could have recorded the guitar in Open Arms (written it and played at the right moments? maybe not...). Stone In Love and Wheel In The Sky showed a bit of what he was capable of, but those weren't exactly their most monstrous hits... the ballads were.

As for the "blurry sloppiness" you hear on the fast runs, that's more related to Neal's style more so than technique flaws, which uses more hammers/pulls to do those fast runs more so than a Lukather or a Petrucci, who are big alternate pickers. You may not like the sound of it, but it's not a technique flaw. He's at his best when he's playing melodically, but he is a rock guitar player in the end, and he can't just simply rely on catchy melodies and deep bends... he's gotta throw some spice on there. He does so with his fast flurries, like the Ask The Lonely solo. One of my favorites.

Neal's a fuckin monster on the guitar, right up there with guys like EVH, Luke, Petrucci, and others for me...

The off shoot avenues these topics take is usualy more fun - but confusing - than the topic title.

Anyway, I liked the interview very much. I found his answers were stright and honest from the place he stood at the time of the event/s he was asked about took place. I didn't find anything in what he said, as regarding his time with SP, as unkind, but he did let it be known between the lines that he didn't find that time particularly comfortable. So be it. He and SP had a blending of voice that to this day I still enjoy listening to....give me some ole' time Infinity/Evolution anyday.
