American Idol judge Paula Abdul is quitting the TV singing contest after eight years.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the 47-year-old said: "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return."

She did not give any reasons for her decision which ends weeks of speculation about contract talks and her future on the show

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest said on his Twitter page that he was "shocked and saddened" by the news.

"Idol and the cast have grown with each other over the last eight seasons," he added.

"I can't imagine the panel without Paula - she's a star and a great friend."

Abdul, meanwhile, wrote that she would "miss nurturing all the new talent".

"But, most of all, being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon," she added.

"What I want to say most is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me."

On Tuesday, it was announced songwriter Kara DioGuardi would be returning to the show to judge along with Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.

TV network Fox said it was "saddened" that Abdul would not be returning to the show, saying she had been "an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons".

"While Paula will not be continuing with us, she's a tremendous talent and we wish her the best."

American Idol remains the most popular show in the US

Abdul's future with American Idol had been unclear since the last series ended in May.

Speculation increased further as producers agreed new contracts with some of the other on-screen talent.

Last month, Seacrest reportedly signed a $15m (£8.9m) deal to front American Idol for the next three years.

In an interview last month, Abdul said she had been invited to stay with the show as long as it aired and that she was optimistic about negotiating a new contract.

Despite a decline in ratings, American Idol remains the most popular show in the US with the last series drawing an average of 26.3 million viewers.

It has spawned stars including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and Chris Daughtry.

They're crazy to let her go. The chemistry between Simon, Paula and Randy and Ryan is undeniable. They need to get rid of that Karla woman. Did nothing for me and it was too crowded and too many opinions. Paula's loopiness and sweetness works on there. I only usually catch half the shows in a season, but Paula deserves to be making more considering what the show makes.

Agree with your whole post. LOL she is totally loopy, but you're right it works....in contrast with Simon.

I don't think that she was too happy about Kara coming to the show. It was much better without her. I bet she would have considered staying on if they had dumped Kara. Kara has an anal personality and is no fun like the other three.

I agree, Paula should be in and Kara should be out. I did not like her on the last season of the show. Even with all of Paula's "loopiness" it worked. The lineup should have stayed Paula, Simon, Randy and Ryan. I doubt if I watch it next season.

It looks as if Kara was brought in to replace Paula...My first impression was "looks like Paula's on the way out" when they first introduced Kara last year.

I was right...

I thought so too, and probably was the plan. But Kara didn't go over so well last season, and even Simon said a month ago in an interview, when Paula was making noises re her pay and leaving, that Paula would be back b/c he wanted her back and made a comment that seemed to me to insinuate he wasn't crazy about the addition of Kara to the show last year. Simon has a lot of clout on that show. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. But I was shocked to see Kara's contract was renewed. I expected to see her gone.

How in the world can you take eight?  I guess two every four hours? When I hurt my back years ago, I was put on Vicodin periodically for a year. One pill a day I was in heaven. I would look forward to that first rush of well-being and energy I felt from it. But two would make me comotose, too tired to work. I couldn't tolerate more than one even though the scrip was one to two every four hours or as-needed. I remember a governor's wife, whose husband got into a lot of trouble, was asked how she got through it, and she said Vicodin, the feeling it gave her. And I understood what she meant.

My grandmother pops that shit like candy since she started breaking vertebrae in her back from osteoporosis. She's 75, in very good health otherwise (ie no diabetes/dementia/heart problems etc etc), but I worry about her. The shit definitely puts her way out there and I've seen/heard of her doing some crazy shit while driving her car while she's on that shit. At least she's happy a lot

  Of course, my dad did some crazy stuff not on pills at 80 while driving.

Vicodin has Tylenol in it which can cause, I forget, kidney damage or liver damage. So I hope she's not taking more than the prescribed dose.

I don't think she is overdoing it, but she ain't exactly rationing pills either. She'll be all right... she doesn't really have a choice, otherwise it's hard for her to do the stuff she enjoys doing. Like I said, she's still 100% fine besides the need for the Vics for her back issues, so she still has an active social life and enjoys doing a lotta stuff. She's not ready to be housebound yet.

jana.i was joking about the 8.i might take five or six a day.yeah they make you happy and you can get through a lot of hardship sometimes if you be careful and do it in moderation.your right if you take too many it will just make you feel crappy and tired and thats where people that take them mess up.they want that feeling so they'll hurry up and take more which just isn't the answer.i had a mother and father but when i was growing up my grandmother took up lots of time with me and became like a second mother.well she passed away in june of 2002 and if not for these vicodin i don't know how i would've made it because it hit me hard.that woman was always there when i needed her even when i was at my worst.i had a step-dad commit suicide in early 2004 that i was close to and again had it not been for these i would not have made it.they aren't the answer to everything but its surprising more people don't know about them because to me they are really good especially for headaches.someone mentioned something about liver or kidney trouble due to the tylenol.i thought of that here a few years ago and i take some herbs and vitamins periodically that help flush that out.actually a doctor suggested it and then i looked it up online before i decided to take it.
