American Idol judge Paula Abdul is quitting the TV singing contest after eight years.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the 47-year-old said: "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return."

She did not give any reasons for her decision which ends weeks of speculation about contract talks and her future on the show

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest said on his Twitter page that he was "shocked and saddened" by the news.

"Idol and the cast have grown with each other over the last eight seasons," he added.

"I can't imagine the panel without Paula - she's a star and a great friend."

Abdul, meanwhile, wrote that she would "miss nurturing all the new talent".

"But, most of all, being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon," she added.

"What I want to say most is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me."

On Tuesday, it was announced songwriter Kara DioGuardi would be returning to the show to judge along with Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.

TV network Fox said it was "saddened" that Abdul would not be returning to the show, saying she had been "an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons".

"While Paula will not be continuing with us, she's a tremendous talent and we wish her the best."

American Idol remains the most popular show in the US

Abdul's future with American Idol had been unclear since the last series ended in May.

Speculation increased further as producers agreed new contracts with some of the other on-screen talent.

Last month, Seacrest reportedly signed a $15m (£8.9m) deal to front American Idol for the next three years.

In an interview last month, Abdul said she had been invited to stay with the show as long as it aired and that she was optimistic about negotiating a new contract.

Despite a decline in ratings, American Idol remains the most popular show in the US with the last series drawing an average of 26.3 million viewers.

It has spawned stars including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and Chris Daughtry.

Well, I care. I never watch the whole seasons, but I love the dysfunctional family they are, and I love how Simon teases her or pisses her off. Karla added nothing last year. Not that she didn't have good insight, but they already have that and don't need her. She didn't have the chemistry with the two guys that Paula does. I bet there will be an uproar about her not coming back.

It was stated on TMZ she was still in negotiations and they countered back lower the second time from her number and the next thing they know she's put that out on twitter. I bet the announcement Karla was coming back the day b/f set her off.

I've changed my mind, they can replace both Paula and Kara with Sass Jordan. She was a great judge on Canadian Idol. She was a 'nice' judge like Paula, but also a ballsy chick that went head to head with Zack, Canadian Idol's version of Simon Cowell. I think she'd probably have great chemistry with Simon and Randy. :)

She's a hoot! Here she is playing "mind ball" with Canadian Idol's version of Simon.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2tDjqQ0tMY

THANK GOD THE DUMBASS IS GONE! She lost any ounce of credibility she had left when she made that comment about that "3rd performance" that never happened. Sick of her getting paid millions to show up drunk or high on coke, and just make the most stupid ass comments. I'll take the new bitch who has real vocal talent anytime over pro tools Paula. And btw, Paula is the original queen of "pro tools vocals".

Sass Jordon was the opening act for Perry's FTLOSM tour. She and Randy could compare notes. Maybe the two of them together could get Perry on Idol. Just a stupid thought. :?

I was just reading the same thing. It is said that she originally asked for $20 million but dropped to $12 million (this is after making $4 million). Rumor has it she might be back for $10 million. Most of this is, of course, based on the idea that who would really walk away from millions of dollars? But timing was right, she tweeted just before some Q&A panel of FOX executives so they will likely be bombarded with questions about Paula throughout.

I think her and Karla should have knock out drag down cage match with Simon doing a run-in and smacking Paula with a folded metal chair and therefore having Karla winning by disqualification.

Okay or just simply tweeting and going home then..... :)

Fox: Abdul off 'Idol'; Posh, Perry guest judges

Aug. 6, 2009, 12:27 PM EST

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice says negotiations are over with Paula Abdul and she's not coming back to "American Idol."

Rice told the Television Critics Association on Thursday that the network made an offer it considered very fair to Abdul, but she decided not to return as a judge on the hit singing contest.

Auditions for the ninth season are set to begin Friday, and Rice said guest judges will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi during the seven weeks of tryouts.

Two have been confirmed to step in as guest "Idol" judges: Victoria Beckham and Katy Perry.

Rice said the network is saddened by Abdul's decision but looks forward to finding a replacement for her who could bring a new dynamic to the show.

Sounds like FOX is gonna play hardball. But Posh and Kety Perry as guest judges? Really? Well, they are both manufactured stars much like AI so I guess that makes sense. But really, don't we want someone to guest who actually KNOWS about a career in the music business???

As much as Simon is my man, and I do mean he's my man   , I will boycott the show without Paula. The huge discrepancy in pay re Ryan and Simon and Paula I find offense to as a woman. Though, Simons deserves a ton of money on there. Without him, the show would not be the same. They probably won't miss me. At most, I catch half of the show each season.
