Acoustic Night With Journey Anyone?

Postby Chubby321 » Wed Aug 05, 2009 2:25 pm

From the most recent chat, Arnel mentioned that he would love to have an acoustic night with the boys..with intimate setting.

That will be awesome and I will be there for sure.

Snooze fest. But not only that, most fans want the rockers, and definitely not a whole set of acoustics, because you know what happens when acoustic shows and christmas albums start happening from great live rock bands?... it's the start of something seriously dreadful, and ultimately the end.

Arnel is coming into a band with a 30 year history behind them, sure suggest, but leave the decisions to the experts. In all honestly, they could do it and it won't be the end of them, because they really don't have anything to lose... not since Perry was with them anyway.

Darn, I was imagining a set up like the MTV unplugged, I was just thinking that Neal or Cain can give a different spin on the slow songs with Arnel on vox.

It might have an audience but I guess the diehards will not approve.

Chub, it could work, but it would be a total ladies night. I'd like to be there just to see all the tang and the way they are dressed, but for me it would be a snoozer. It would sell if marketed to the right demographic. You won't see many dudes at such a gig though.

Maybe pure ballad is a little harsh. I was just brainstorming. Maybe similar to what PianoMan1986 just posted?

Nirvana did it.

Postby ttango1 » Wed Aug 05, 2009 5:35 pm

If they could do it, Journey could.

Hell Clapton re-arranged some of his songs for an Unplugged.

In 1992, Eric Clapton recorded an Unplugged performance at Bray Studios in London. He rearranged many of his famous songs for the acoustic context, some becoming quite dramatically transformed. The resulting Unplugged album went on to become the bestselling Unplugged album in the U.S., with sales of 10 million.

On August 9, 1995, Kiss performed on an episode that would lead to the reunion of the original members. (See Kiss Unplugged). Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons contacted former members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley and invited them to participate in the show. Fan reaction to Criss and Frehley at the Unplugged show was so positive that in 1996 the original Kiss lineup officially reunited, together for the first time since 1979.

For me the highlight of Augeri's time in the band was an acoustic version of Liberty which Journey did with Styx and Reo Speedwagon. The clip doesn't seem to be on You Tube anymore but Schon's acoustic solo in this performance is one of his best ever....

So I could happily see the band do an entire set. At the very least they'd be doing something a bit risky and different...

Can you even begin to imagine what Neal's guitar might sound like? He has the power to move a song to a different level, case in point, the new intro in Open Arms. And Arnel's voice sounds more amazing with less background; if you guys remember the Open Arms acapella in the documentary; even wombat commented on how nice it sounded. (OA is just an example and don't freak out everyone)

If the transformation of the song is dramatic and appealing, they might even hit the jackpot. It actually might appeal to many people and might end up liking it, if they play their cards right. And it's also nice to go out of the box once in awhile.

I hope I am giving Neal and idea and with their talent, they can surely take it to another level. 8) It could be a special project. Like what you said a bit risky and different.

Would NEVER go down for 1 reason and 1 reason only:

Background vocals. No way in hell would anyone ever use taped background vocals for an acoustic performance. And the boys just don't sound as good as they used to live anymore, except for Deen. ;)

I think it would be great for a show like UnPlugged or Storytellers. I think the rearranging of material for acoustic would be cool, stories about the songs, and I don't think you would need more than Deen on BG Vox to harmonize. Why have a wall of BG Vox for a stripped down song?

All depends on what songs you play. Whoever came up with the notion that acoustic shows are always ballad shows obviously never passed the message along to Jimmy Barnes. He's done full-band acoustic shows that were more rocked up than the studio recordings. I've seen other artists do the same thing. Obviously some songs will tailor better to an acoustic format than others, but I can think of something like Ask the Lonely going down very well if you unplugged it but didn't change the tempo.

As far as backing vocals go, it depends on the song, but Journey has some of the best around. It would be a shame to cut them out, since so few bands can harmonize that well together.

I just think it would take a LOT of re-arranging to make their music work even decently unplugged. Just too many synths, burning power chords instead of straight rhythm guitar (i.e. Ask The Lonely verse), soaring delayed guitar leads, and huge background vocals...

I Agree, You'd have to play the earlier material to make it work, which Deen's voice is more suited to, as most of it is at such a high Alto Range.
Listen to Deen sing Patiently and you can tell his voice fits the pre-Escape material far better than Pinny's does.
