"When I joined, I immediately tailored my lyrics to Steve [Perry], so Steve could be comfortable with a soulful delivery of the music. He needed the lyrics to be authentic, to feel authentic and so I catered to that need. The two of us in that band [Cain and Perry], we had similar record heroes, similar influences – stuff like Three Dog Night, or The Hollies, or the Eagles. We liked the same music and were going for that same melodic presentation."

I hope for once these guys learn that trashing each other publicly will only give themselves a black eye. I have great admiration for Jon, and love his music. But at the same time I love Steve's music, and have been a Perry fan for a long time. I just want to love the music. Not hear who did what to whom. That is personal stuff that they need to keep and work out themselves. Life is just to short to keep grudges that serve no purpose.

McKinneyNews.net: I have to ask. What about Steve Perry? Will Steve ever be part of the band again?

Cain: I think Steve kind of closed the door. We have an open door policy. If he wants to come around and sing I’m sure Arnel will be the first to tell you he will share the stage with Steve Perry. But Steve’s kind of moved on. He’s got his own life.

I think she was refering to this question. But as he said. Perry has moved on. Don't get your hopes up.

After years and years of hearing about "1/2/3/4 steps tuned down" songs and the usual drama that comes with that, haha... I finally get to see this: "I had to transpose the song about four steps up." Just thought it was funny.

How about this line?

"Things on the new album Steve Perry wouldn’t touch"

Do you think that's a shot? Like he couldn't do them now, could never have done them or just wouldn't have done them, stylistically?

Hmm.......

The open door policy thing is funny too. Anybody want to take odds on that ever happening? I mean, I think it would be cool and I'd sure as hell watch, but can you imagine him agreeing to do that?

I think your reading smoke between the lines. I don't feel he took any shots at Perry, and it seemed he was just answering the questions. Maybe because of Arnel's style and Steve's being different that is all. As far as them together again? :lol:

Two things stood out to me:

Cain: " ...It’s funny. I was hired to bring an edge to the band, but ironically I brought the love songs."

and

McKinneyNews.net: What about "Faithfully?" That was your song, right?

Cain: "Yeah.... I recorded a demo and played it for Steve and he wanted it for his solo record. I told him the song was about me and Journey, not about his solo record."

I thought it was a fanatastic interview about the songwriting process between the guys. It always boggles my mind the way some on here dismiss Cain's contribution to Journey, and it was huge.

I thought that one was pretty self-explanatory, but.....basically, it meant that Perry needed to be able to relate to the lyrics he was singing. In other words, he wasn't going to let Journey turn into a band writing about dungeons and dragons (or pick random topic he couldn't relate to). Lyrics aren't important to some people, but they are to others. For singers, they are usually pretty important, since that is where the heart of your vocal is coming from. Obviously, that relatability of what he was singing was very important to Perry. No real surprise at all...

Agreed. I also don't get picking apart his words and demonizing the man. Geez he said nothing ugly about Steve, so loons relax, and he just answered the questions as they came. It was a nice interview. Jon is an amazing piano player, I remember the first time I saw Journey and he did a solo. I was so uplifted. It was so beautiful. He is a talented man. End of story.

LOL, Since 78. :lol:

Wrong. They've written some beautiful music post-Steve, and I will always show my appreciation for that and the songs I love off Arrival and Red13, Generations and Revelation. Generations was uneven, but there are some songs I absolutely love from that CD.

Hmm.......

My guess is he means wouldn't have/refused to do them. I've thought that about everyting from 98 on just "I couldn't see perry agreeing to make songs like that."
