I know we are just not nice are we  .....we need to keep the delicate balance of this place...not too sweet here!

Ah, the Prince of Darkness and his Mistress of Gloom and Doom re Arnel. Balance all right.

You have '78, don't you? Seems balanced to me.

Yep all is even...and yes Soto sounds great....DEB has made me a fan!!

Perry is doing great finally recording. Steve Augeri is back singing. JSS is doing great. And Journey is kicking ass this year with Arnel as lead singer to great reviews overall, much to some people's dismay, and Neal is on fire, as are Jon, Deen, and Ross. I couldn't be happier. So I am spreading my sunshine all around.

I will make sure to wear my sunglasses when you come around..and if you listen to some of the recent Youtubes you must have some rose colored ones on....

Great lyrics and a great message detuned to make it sound like the singer is pissed off. A half step down takes this song from hero to zero. What shite ... proper tune please. I mean fuck, it really does sound like Creed. FUCK! It sounds like shit!

WCTNGOF is a song I wanted to hear last year. Now, though, after hearing how Faithfully sounds stepped down and Arnel's inability of late to produce that one clean (as in not sounding like a gargled scream) high note at the end which would be required, I think it would come off rather poorly.
To be fair, I'll wait for the youtube videos before I give any further analysis.

So are we going for a show where Deen sings 1/2 the songs??

Sure, And let Soto sing the other half.

Have to say Arnel always sounds good singing OA (to these untrained ears). And Neal certainly has learned to make the song his own, that originated with him having "nothing to do."

Faithfully is hit and miss, though. And, I agree with J28, there are songs that Arnel (or anyone, for that matter) should never attempt ... like WCTNGOF (imo). For me, that song is forever SP's.

My all-time favorite Journey song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGMMXRYvzJQ

SP never sang it live, but I do believe it is his finest vocal performance on record, ever. The emotion in his voice, delivering the peaks & valleys to the song(story), how he sustains the notes for optimum effect .... just perfection.

Yes, I'm a loon, but in all my years, I have never heard a song sung better (by a male or female).

I think once you get comfortable enough with another musician, you can fix the timing issues on the fly. I think Steve and Smitty worked off of each other a lot during live shows. and that was definitely part of the magic that the classic Journey line up had going for it.

Are you looking over my shoulder? I had this almost exact post ready to go. Perry talked about this countless times. Perry, a drummer himself, communicated with SS and Smith knew how to drum "for a singer." Those guys did work like peanut butter and jelly.

Couldn't agree more. Curious...being that I haven't been to a post-Perry show...did SA, JSS or AP take cues off of Deen?

Question, let's say Steve did come back, how bad would the same vocal minority treat him, if he sounded as bad as say Joe Elliott of Def Leppard OR the songs were tuned down a full octave?

Would he be praised? I doubt it. I think you guys would turn on him too. Sadly in this world, there are people who are not happy unless they have something, anything to complain about.

AP ain't going anywhere, and SP isn't coming back. AP's voice has some road wear on it, certainly, but he's got plenty left in the bank. He does need some technique help with a vocal coach, because he still tries to yell every note. If I had a voice like that, I probably would too, but for longevity sake, he needs better technique.

That's the difference between him and Kelly Hansen. Kelly was a Rock and Roll veteran when he came to Foreigner. Five years on, he's still doing well because he's a professional and taken care of his voice. Pineda is a Bar singer who is completely undisciplined at times and it shows. Last year, Arnel got a free pass but this year he needs to bring it as far as I'm concerned. He needs to stop complaining about how hard it is and buckle down. His family, charity and all that other stuff needs to stop distracting him. The band has given him vocal coaches and everything else he could want, yet when the tour ends, he goes home and forgets everything he's been taught, and then he has to get re-acclimated to everything once he comes stateside again. Having seen the guy live last year, I know he can do better and I WAS EXPECTING HIM TO IMPROVE DRAMATICALLY THIS YEAR! I'm not seeing that, actually he seems to have regressed.

I think the point is moot. He's a perfectionist, I don't think SP would step on a stage unless he knew he could perform to his own level of high standards. I think with SP, there is no half-assed, it's all or nothing.

I quoted you GB because you used the term "shipped out". I know it was in jest. But I don't think that terminology should apply here. It reeks of all the FOB talk when he was hired. Other than that, I have no qualms with you.

His diction is greatly improved and if some of you actually make it out to the show, you'd hear it...most of the time.

What sucks is when the guy does great and the fans he has talk about it, AP gets disdain. When he has an off-night, believe me, a live performance IS NOT A GUARANTEE that all will go well, then AP gets even more disdain.
It's a cannot win situation. Your basic Kobayashi Maru. However...every ticket bought, every record bought...is a win for Journey. Do they "win" as much as they used to? That's a no...but hell, what act from the height of melodic rock wins that much? I know some will say Bruce Springstein, but the truth is, even he had periods of non-success.

We all know the complexities of the catalog. The shows I went to, Journey, regardless of who is singing lead, has been nothing short of awesome. Missed notes and all. It's live music and I'm cool with that.

Amen.

I think the point is moot. He's a perfectionist, I don't think SP would step on a stage unless he knew he could perform to his own level of high standards. I think with SP, there is no half-assed, it's all or nothing.

Exactly, he's a professional. Perry always stepped up when the band was being showcased on TV, whether it be in the States or the televised shows in Japan and Germany. Whenever the band was in the spotlight, the guy brought it.

+ Infinity - well said and you can add my name to the list of the vocal minority guess the list is getting longer!!!

As much as I loved the SP fronted Journey and the tremendous talent that was. I realize just that; it WAS. For demonstration puposes only, SP really, really needs to come back. When fans realize that he can no longer sing, maybe then they will STFU and the current fans can finally enjoy them without the fuckin Perry loon interventions in every Arnel fronted Journey thread. Journey is still a great band...yes, even fronted by Arnel Pineda. For his few faults, he brings the fans a great deal of enjoyment. Hell, Herbie Herbert has gone on record as saying SP can no longer sing. No matter what is said around here I will still listen to and support the current band. I am a Journey fan. Those who claim to be Journey fans, but out the other side of their mouths are dissing AP or other members of Journey, are not Journey fans in my book. They are Perry fans. (that's ok, but call it what it is)

On a brighter note, I'm looking forward to the Manila DVD and the upcoming documentary. :D :D :D
