Steve Perry & Tim Miner writing session (1994)

Postby *Laura » Mon Aug 17, 2009 3:17 am

The writing session of "Missing You".
This is one of the most valuable items in my collection and I'm glad to share it with those of you who don't have it.
It's something that didn't circulate around too much and I believe that it's the only "bootleg" of this kind.
It's a one hour long crystal clear quality writing session, with only Steve and Tim in the studio. A keyboard and a voice. THAT voice, of course.:)

Enjoy.

Hi, *Laura ~

Nice to see you around here....how have you been? 8)

THIS is a must-have......it really shows that EVERYone goes thru a big process to write a song....
It's cool to hear Steve "in action" doing this.....speaking and then breaking into song.....back and forth; over and over....

Found my copy and listening again....

Listen to how he sounds at 5:14....singing a phrase to himself quietly; in falsetto. Wow.

Laura.. I must say that your download was simply the most fantastic thing I have been able
to come across on MR since joining!! Thank you so very much for posting it. I don't know how you came
to have it, but I hope, beyond hope, that there are more sessions like this that have been recorded that someday,
we might get to hear.

I was not surprised by how professional Perry and the people he was working with, were during the session.
They were all very serious, very productive, and very successful with that song, Missing You. It
was fun to see how the words developed, into the song we now love. Thanks so much.. :D :D

This was released as a b-side on one on the FTLOSM singles. Either Missing You or You Better Wait. I don't know how much Miner was involved in the actual writing session. The two songs that appeared on the record also appear without Perry's writing credit on Tim Miner's album released prior to FTLOSM. He has a good voice and the songs are good, but as he always did Perry takes it to another level. I think I have the Tim Miner record somewhere. It was on Motown Records.

That must have been hell of a single because the download is an hour long.

The part that was released on the single was just the 5 minute complete run-through of the finished song at the end. This download goes through the writing process that got Steve and Tim to the point where they were ready for that final run-through.

Nope, this isn't what was on that disk.. It's that plus over an hour of the entire writing process leading up to the finished song. I only listened to the first 20 minutes or so, but it is amazing! I will finish the rest of it tonight. Thank you VERY much Laura!!! :D

Oh, I knew that you of all people will enjoy this the most because you're a keyboardist.;) You're welcome, Jim.

To Portland: To be honest, I uploaded this without listening and it's been a loooong time since I've played it. Can't remember the end of it, I'll have to hear it again. I'll tell you if I recognize something (although I doubt it, lol)

Well, I listened to the last 3 or 4 minutes of the session and to me it sounds like a gospel theme or something like that. I guess it was just a smooth transition from Missing You into some gospel-like theme. Maybe it sounds so familiar because just like blues has a set of basic notes so easy to recognize, so does gospel/church music.
One thing is sure - SP sang some gospel before, so it's no surprise. Maybe Tim Miner was into it too.

Speaking of gospel...I just can't help it. LOL... This reminded me of Sister Act.
Crossed my mind that a "Loon Choir" would be a worldwide success. The lyrics fit too...hahaha...snort...sorry...

The song he was working on in the end turned into "Anyway". The song was obviously re-written from what you hear here. The chord structure and nearly everything else is intact. The lyrics were just different in this version. I just finished listening to the whole thing, and I am just blown away at how amazing his vocals are/were live without editing. This man needs NO Protools whatsoever!

I would give anything to have a sit-in writing session with that man!!! He is just incredible, and I write a lot of stuff in this same style. I think I could write some cool songs with him. Oh well... in my dreams!  Thanks again Laura, this is one of the coolest downloads I've EVER checked out!

Yeah and this after he lost his voice right??  .....and I thought it was Anyway too I just was thrown by the words. It does solidify in my mind where the title of the Voice came from....when he is on there is no one who does it better.

No Doubt................ Just unbelieveable!!!!!  It felt like going to a private session, like sitting right there watching him work with the keyboardist. It was surreal to hear. Like a dream............. Thank you again Laura.

Thankyou SO much Laura.
This is one of my favourites of his and to listen to this feels like I was part of the creation process.

I just listened to the whole download. The birth of a song. How good was that??? It was great that's what it was!
And weird because we know what the final version of it sounds like.
Thanks again for letting us share that little gem.

I see that under your Av you are in SoCal. Have you moved to the USA now then?
