Why Didn't Soul Sirkus Do Well?l

Postby perryswoman » Sun Aug 23, 2009 2:46 pm

Okay first let me say I am not here to start a fight but why didn't this band get good reviews? I saw JSS with Journey and thought we was fantastic although I like him better in SS but it just seemed he and Neal had good chemistry in that band and Neal could rock alittle harder? Why didn't they do well?

Imagine if it would have done well. Augeri might have been given a little more time off or even let go and things might have been completely diferent in regards to where Journey is now.

Used to wonder if SS didn't take themselves way too seriously. Not saying they should have just been a garage band playing for funsies, but I do think they over-produced themselves a bit. They were a super group of relative unknowns and the timing was off for a heavy R&B almost progressive thing.

Btw, always wished they'd covered Grand Funk Railroad's 'Some Kind of Wonderful' for a radio song & show opener. (I think there are several GFR songs they could redo quite well.) They could have had some sort of edgy dim orchestration just trickling thru that crescendo'd a bit into the drums & bass that starts that song. That could quickly crescendo into punching you right in the face just before Soto rips into the opening lines. He would move over to the keys and then Neal comes out on guitar. Always thought that would be a fun cool way to open their shows.

Been a while, your thread gave me reason to spin it again.

The one thing that stands out more than any other is the lack of hooks. It plays more like a long jam than anything else.

It reminds me of an album that's similar in style (heavy guitar driven rock) but completely full of hooks and melody.

SS suffered 'cause despite funding it and being as dedicated as he might of been, this was still a side project for Neal. If it didn't fly, oh well, there's always that other successful band to go back to.

"Had I known that everything was going to be so sleepy in America, nobody would even know who we were; I would have just done two months in Europe and forgotten about America right now."........Neal Schon

Maybe S.S. will make a comeback someday when Schon's name becomes a household name.

As a side note, as good as JSS' new project sounds...naming the band W.E.T. is absolutely ridiculous. They couldn't come up with a better name than taking the initials of the members' previous bands? How am I going to bring this up in conversation? "Yeah, have you heard the new album by wet?"

Soul Sirkus, W.E.T., yikes.

I like SS! It's dirty rock, gritty rock, hard rock.............not everything has to have poppy hooks. Would love to have seen SS LIVE..........and would be cool to see Jeff and Marco work together again.

It poses another interesting problem - years ago a friend googled the band 'Wet Wet Wet' and had to go through three pages of porn before getting to the band. I tried it today and it's no longer a problem, but I can imagine the responses a few word combinations from potential song titles with the band name might get; W.E.T. + love, hot, lady, etc.

Well, I certainly would not trade Journey for SS and that might be what would have come to if Neal would have stayed committed to it.

That's what some people say, and that's why some people say that the band was deliberately sabotaged by Journey's management. The common belief all along was that some people in Journey's management wouldn't let Neal take the time necessary to start-up the band and wouldn't properly support it as they would any other up-and-coming band.

Neal got his second chance with the JSS-fronted Journey, and from all accounts it was the best of both worlds for Mr. Schon - a band that was poised to rock harder with his choice of frontman, and a band that had name recognition to continue to be big.

And the rest I'll leave blank.

So in the end, Azoff wouldn't let them is probably a pretty true statement.
