Why does Neal never get the recognition he deserves?

Postby SusieP » Tue Aug 25, 2009 6:30 am

In UK Classic Rock this month there is a feature on the 100 greatest guitar players of all time. They asked great guitarists to name their favourites and the list was compiled.

He's nowhere to be seen. Hasn't even been asked to comment on other 'great' guitarists.

He is clearly a great player. His style is recognisable. He's sold millions of 'units' all over the world. So why is he not classed as one of the greats?

I know everyone has different tastes, but a top ONE HUNDRED and he isn't there? It makes me really angry.

The list is - in reverse order.........

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous that he's never included among the greats. Especially not in something that lists the top 100. I'm sure a lot of it stems from the fact that it's "not cool" to like Journey.

It makes me very angry.

He has a beautiful sound, a distinctive style but never gets a mention.

grrrrr

LOL, it's not cool to like Mr Big either, but Paul Gilbert is on the list. :)

I agree though Neal should be too.

Well in that case, I blame Neal's omission on the fact that it was a crappy British magazine.

I can only conclude that some guitarists don't know their arse from their G-string. Neal should be on as should Luke. Lonnie Donnegan!!!!!!!!!. How many of you own a Lonnie Donnegan record? - surely not even Gunbot.

So this list was compiled by other guitarists. Can't blame the magazine for this one. These were Neal's peers who provided the selections.

Brian May played on a Lonnie Donnegan album. I bet he voted for him.

And John lennon? Is he really a great guitarist????
Songwriter yes? Guitarist?????

WTF.

I slung the bloody magazine across the room.
I'm going to stop buying the stupid thing.

Their review of Journey at the Download festival in last month's edition just said, "Journey were the crowd favourite."
That was all it said.

I emailed the mag and gave them a bollocking but they have ignored me.

I was gonna start fussin' but now I have no reason to.

Chet Atkins

After seeing his name on the list, these guitarists doing the selections are alright by me.

Unfortunately, he's cursed with playing for a band who was thought of by many as being nothing more than a hit machine. Regardless of how well he plays, it's hard for many critics to look beyond that.

What's so wrong with being a hit machine other than others are jealous?

The list I typed out was compiled by other famous guitarists, though.

You'd think at least ONE of them would have given Neal a mention. His talent is glaringly obvious.

You know, it annoys me that Neal is classed as uncool and yet a guy with GIGANTIC hair, a cigarette constantly hanging out of his mouth and wearing a bloody top hat while posing on top of a bloody mountain is classed as cool.

I must live in a parallel universe to everyone else.

And LONNIE DONNEGAN??????

Stupid magazine.
I think I am gonna stop buying it.
All the news is old by the time it's out.
And if all they can say about my favourite band in a review of their performance is 'they were the crowd favourite' - then why do I bother with it?

It would obviously have made them choke to write a long review actually praising them.

Damn them.

And next time I see Brian May, I'll slap his legs.

Yeah, but cool, accomplished, talented and famous are four different things....

Damn you for speaking sense.

Nothing but love, Susie....nothing but love.

I've calmed down now.

Ok, now it's all becoming clear. Neal is so good that he doesn't chart. He's so far out there nobody can say anything. There is too much elbowing at the top of the chart, so just leave Neal out there in his own galaxy.

This is what happens when you decide that Open Arms is indispensable and must be performed during every single show.

so Open Arms is to blame?

Every great guitarist in the world hates it so much that they conspired to leave Neal off the list as an act of revenge????

But but what about Jeff Beck's 'Hi Ho silver Lining?' creating THAT has to be a hanging offence?????
