Another Steve Perry Tribute Band

Postby SP Fan in Oregon » Wed Aug 26, 2009 11:53 am

August 21, 2009 - By Steve Spears (Stuck in the 80s).

Wanna see another Steve Perry lookalike?
Journey fans, this one's gonna freak you out. There's a big Retro Party on Saturday night (Aug. 22) here in Tampa Bay and it features a Journey tribute band called Don't Stop Believin'.

So far, so good. But the "tribute" group -- billed as the best Journey tribute act in the U.S. -- says it has "a Steve Perry Clone that has to be seen and heard to be believed!"

Lucky you. Just click this link, watch the videos and decide for yourself.

http://www.maximumbands.com/journey_tribute.html

The concert -- which also features a New Wave cover band called That's So '80s -- is at the Largo Cultural Center. Tickets are $18 in advance or $23 at the door. (Hey, that's pretty much what I paid to see the real Steve Perry ... back in 1981).

Well, I don't think he looks like Perry, but his singing isn't bad. Once you click on the link to the bands website, there is a link to Don't Stop Believin and you can take a listen and see what you think.

Sounds like Bon Jovi doin' Journey. Hugo's better, Arnel's def better.

Why so many J trib bands I wonder?

REO can't get arrested, let alone have their own trib band.

I still think Juan Del Castillo is as close to Perry tonally as I've ever heard.... and he's a tenor, maybe even an alto tenor... Juan pretty much sings in the same effortless way Pery did, cause it simply his natural range...

NO FRICKIN WAY! Juan is not bad, but Jeremey and Arnel (at times scary close) is by far closer to the legacy sound. Now, this band is not bad at all, but the wig on a 45+ year old has got to go! :) lol...

Well, I have to agree this Juan fellow is VERY GOOD. He has a lot of style on stage that makes him pleasing as well.
There are certainly a LOT of Journey Tribute Bands. Hugo, Jeremey, Juan, and the Don't Stop Believin band. Are there more?
Someone should have a live Battle of the Journey Tribute Bands event and let the audience vote!
I have a friend who is a promoter that controls a very nice venue with a huge stage in an Amphitheater. I think I'll talk
to him about that. 8)

That was freaking awesome. He nailed LTS. And your right, he did it effortlessly. Now THAT would have been a good choice if they wanted the "signature" sound.

I always thought a good name for an REO coverband would be the O-REOs - but it'd never fly. Can you imagine an MR genre tribute band where the bars they play in can only serve milk?

I would be willing to bet if Arnel's voice doesnt hold up the guys will close shop. IF they dont I would say Juan is the guy since Kelty seems out of the loop and doesnt have it like he did. Kelty was a dead ringer...

Juan's a little less manly on stage compared to Arnel. (A little too hip-py in that LTS vid. eek!) Arnel's energy on stage makes up for any vocal imperfections as far as live performance is concerned.

Journey Tribute Trial by Fire

Postby eshepherd2000 » Wed Sep 16, 2009 12:40 pm

There is none like Mr Perry. I love and respect the mans voice. I have been listening to him sing since I was 10 years old and I would walk 1000 miles to see him sing coke jingles! I respect all of the guys out there with the guts to sing his stuff.

You've got to be kidding. Most Latinos just have a natural groove. IMO, Arnel does more leaping and bouncing around than anything. Now that's funny, do you think Arnel's more manly than JSS on stage too....cuz he can get pretty hip-py?

I think Juan would be awesome for the band.
Arnel had the energy of a chronic asthma sufferer when he was with the Zoo. He only has the energy and presence he has now cause he is singing in front of thousands each and every time, and not 20 people. Castillo, i am pretty sure would have a far better presence, energy, and better stage persona if he were singing to thousands, i think we all would.

I don't think they wanted a clone, or to hire the closest living singer that sounds like Perry. I think they wanted someone who sounds like Perry (ie pure tenor--which knocks JSS out), but can also do something else on original material. That is MUCH harder to find the right person than just hiring the best Perry sound-alike out there, which is what you do for a tribute band.

You are fucking deaf. Nobody posted in this thread sounds good, infact the first singer sounds like shit. They are all Karaoke at best. LMAO.This guy does not equal hits. The songwriting ,a good song, delivered by someone who can actually sing, are what make hits. A voice alone does not make a song.
