Well I grew up in the 90s, and I still love 90s music, and I know plenty of people my age who do too. The decade was not shit and I'm pretty sure it wasn't disappointing for the people who grew up in it, unless their earliest memory is Backstreet Boys. Obviously I like Pearl Jam but I was only 6 when they hit it big, so I'm talking more like Third Eye Blind, Alanis, Green Day, Sublime, No Doubt, Oasis as mentioned, and a ton of little one hit wonders many people in their early/mid twenties would smile with nostalgia if they heard. Recently in Sacramento they made a 90s radio station (though sadly it replaced the only good rock station there) and I know quite a few people including myself who listen to it.

I won't say the entire decade was shit, but I will say that it was a HELL of a lot harder to find good bands in the 90's. The shit to great ratio was pretty much off the scale, with shit taking up the biggest portion probably ever (with the exception of the current decade... don't even get me started). There were some amazing artists that came out of both decades, but for my money the 80's was far more consistent.

Yeah, this decade, for mainstream stuff, is absolutely putrid.

How many bands are there that emerged in the 90s and offered a unique sound that other artists for decades to come will point to as a significant influence, who produced more than one or two successful songs, and deserve the distinction of being called "classic rock"? The 90s doesn't really have its own version of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Foreigner, Journey, U2, etc., though No Doubt might be as close as it gets.

Personally I think the lack of great melodic rock music in the 90s (or perhaps more accurately, more widely successful, dominant bands) is one of the reasons there was such a surge in the popularity of crossover country rock acts like Garth Brooks and country pop acts like Shania Twain. The music of the 90s seemed to be dominated by Rap on one side and R&B/pop divas like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion on the other, while most of the new rock offered was either as angry as Rap or simply lacked the soaring vocals and beautiful melodies/musicianship/songwriting of groups like Journey and Foreigner.

Watered-down ska. "Hits" are mostly songs the lead singer writes about being burned by her bass-player/ex-boyfriend (and years ago, at that).

Please try again. :)

That's part of the problem, I couldn't think of anyone else! This is one of the few 90s groups that were big and continue to have recognition and success a decade later, but I can't explain why. I hope someone can come up with a better group than that too!

This decade has a lot of DRONE rock. Music that drones on and on with no build, climax...no nothing.

Music from the 80's lacked depth.
Music from the 80's lacked an edge.
Music from the 80's lacked substance.
Music from the 80's lacked creativity.
Music from the 80's lacked enough guitar.

Blah...you can play this game about every generation of music. The whole point behind rock music is that the next generation comes along and does something different than the previous one.

In your opinion they did ...and thats fine....but many were digging it...
like all those that graduated from high school in the 90's had " their" music from "their" generation....the same as you and I did. Every "older" generation thinks the music of their youth was the best.....could be, could not be. Music is subjective...as is all art... some speaks to and is appreciated by some and some like something else.....thats the beauty of so much creativity of expression...theres something for everyone to enjoy from the past, the present and will be in the future. :)

WHat a lame, dumb-assed remark! Joe Elliot is a moron. I'd put Tool's ANIEMA, Incubus's MAKE YOURSELF and Counting Crows AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER up against ANYTHING that band has ever done! The 90's, like all decades, had it's weak spots and it's one hit wonders, but it also had some brilliant music. PLEASE people- pull your heads out of your asses and get over this "90's music / grunge killed my hair metal" attitude. Let it go!
