What did Paula Abdul know about music?

LOL. Very true. She never had anything constructive to say. I like Ellen a lot - I have a lot of respect for her. If this is true...very interesting move. I like shows that take risks.

Well since the viewers do the voting, it really doesn't matter. I love humor and I love Ellen's humor and as someone who normally only watches the finaly, it will make me a new viewer this season. If they are picking up new viewers, can't be all that dumb. She's likeable. People like her.

I could not agree more hon. :D

DeGeneres says she'll be honest but kind on 'Idol'
By LYNN ELBER

AP Television Writer

LOS ANGELES — Ellen DeGeneres is known for being nice. But the new "American Idol" judge said that she's ready to be honest with the show's contestants, good or bad.

"I think it's going to be hard, but as my career has grown. ... I've learned how to be tougher and learned how to say no," DeGeneres said Thursday, a day after her addition to the show was announced. "I think I can do it and I think I can do it in a respectful way."

Any bluntness will be reserved for fellow judge Simon Cowell, known for his barbed remarks to contestants and colleagues.

"When Simon is rude and mean, I will tell him he's rude and mean, just like I tell him when he's on my show that he's rude and mean," DeGeneres said, referring to "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

She'll continue with her daytime talkfest as she takes on "Idol" judging duties for the show's ninth season, starting in January.

DeGeneres, who signed a five-year deal with the top-rated Fox singing contest, said she was "shocked and excited" when the opportunity came her way.

The fourth seat opened up when Paula Abdul resigned by way of Twitter in the midst of a contract dispute this summer. Abdul said in a statement Thursday she thinks DeGeneres "is wildly funny and talented in her own right" and wished her and the show "only the best of luck."

DeGeneres, who hasn't been part of the parade of guest judges taking Abdul's place in preseason auditions, came to the attention of "American Idol" producers another way.

After serving as a guest judge on Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," the network and "Idol" creator Simon Fuller "started sniffing around and said, `Are you interested?' and I said, `Yes, of course. ... I love that show and I'd love to do it.'"

In online postings, some "Idol" fans have applauded the comedian's selection for the humor she'll bring to the show. Others, however, have questioned her credentials.

Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi all bring deep record industry experience to their critiques.

"I know as much as anybody who goes out there and buys a record. I know what I like and I think I do know what is special and has the `it' factor," DeGeneres said in response, adding that she's brought talented new artists to public attention on her talk show.

She hesitated to name her one favorite "Idol" contestant from years past, instead listing Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler.

But DeGeneres has a ready answer when asked if she and DioGuardi, who appeared onstage last season in a swimsuit with a contestant dubbed "Bikini Girl," might get into a similar duel.

"That I can guarantee you will never happen. I don't ever, ever like to definitely answer anything with a yes or no, but that's a no," she said firmly.

NADA. This is a joke factor. This show is supposed to be about TALENT, but talent usually takes a back seat. I think this show is set up with the drama element in mind. Proof of that is the talented singers who have been overlooked early on.

What is interesting is the fact that Miss Ellen has always had favorite Idols along the way, and follows the show as it progresses each season. So the question begging for an answer is "Will she have favorites next season, and will she be critiquing according to personal favoritism? I say YES!

Do you seriously think this show would spend millions of dollars, and then let the public decide who gets to win? This is all planned out ahead of time. There's nothing that says the outcome isn't skewed. Most likely it is.

This show isn't supposed to be about humor. It's supposed to be about talent. The fact that most Idols are beholden to the show forever, with that ironclad contract, means they are tethered to them for infinity. This show should be named $$MONEY$$

I think Ellen will do well, but I think Sass would have been a great fit. She held her own against Zack (Canadian Idol's version of Simon Cowell). She was a "nice" judge like Paula but with a little extra edge.

This clip from auditions totally cracks me up.........  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95MeR0ywH64

Don't forget, Sass has the Steve Perry connection. Maybe she could have talked him into something.

Ellen DeGeneres is New Judge on 'American Idol'
Sept. 9, 2009, 8:33 PM EST
By Josef Adalian, The Wrap

"American Idol" has found its new Paula: Ellen DeGeneres.

The Fox series has announced a deal that would make the talk show host/comic the new fourth judge on America's top-rated show. She would replace Paula Abdul, who quit "Idol" over the summer due to a salary scuffle.

"I'm thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol," said DeGeneres in Fox's news release. "I've watched since the beginning, and I've always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I'll save from not having to text in my vote."

"I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the American Idol family," said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. "Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can't wait for this next season to begin."

"We're all delighted to have Ellen join our ninth season of American Idol," said executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz. "Beyond her incredible sense of humor and love of music, she brings with her an immense warmth and compassion that is almost palpable. She is one of America's foremost entertainers, and we cannot wait to have her join our team."

DeGeneres has been a major "Idol" fan, featuring contestants from the show on her daytime chatfest on a regular basis. She also came close to guest co-host the show's "Idol Gives Back" charity special last year, but dropped out due to a scheduling conflict.

More recently, however, DeGeneres served as a guest judge on "So You Think You Can Dance," the sister show to "Idol" that airs in the summer.

Further proves my opinion that this show has no musical credibility, aside from Mr. Randy Jackson being there.

Still better than what I was originally going to post: "YOU. HAVE. GOT. TO. BE. FUCKING. KIDDING. ME."

Seriously... WTF??? Wouldn't she be better off on a show that judges COMICS? Like Last COMIC Standing or something? Ugh. Modern pop culture logic really irks me to no end.
Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. YOU GOT THAT?

My guess is her contract with AI will assure that she won't have to travel at all. She probably won't come on board until the Hollywood rounds begin, maybe not even until the other three have whittled the Hollywooders down to the final boy/girl batches.

She's a HUGE music fan. I thinks that alone (along with her sense of humor) will make her a great judge.

BTW...Anne Heche? Way predictable, and more than a little "yesterday." Methinks someone should find a new writer for their "material"...
