Journey/Heart
September 10, 2009

Journey, the 1970s power ballad band, has had a longer shelf life than anyone expected -- including former frontman Steve Perry, who since 1991 has seen himself replaced by a string of singers, the latest of whom, Arnel Pineda, was found singing Journey songs in a cover band.

But the band got a boost from its song ''Don't Stop Believing'' being used in the final scene of the last episode of the HBO series ''The Sopranos'' and in the hot new Fox-TV musical-comedy ''Glee.'' The song's now the most-downloaded ''catalog'' track in iTunes history.

And last week, there the band was, playing CBS ''The Early Show.''

7:30 p.m. today, with Heart, Sovereign Center, 700 Penn St., Reading. Tickets $49.50-$79. With free pre-concert block party at 5:30 p.m. (band will not attend), 610-898-7469, http://www.sovereigncenter.com

Heart and Journey team up for concert in Reading
By Tracy Rasmussen
Reading Eagle Correspondent

Guitar Heroes and guitar legends Ann and Nancy Wilson are as red-hot today as they were back in the '70s and '80s when they regularly charted hits.

Heart, known for iconic hits such as "Barracuda" and "Crazy on You," will appear at the Sovereign Center with its contemporaries now and then, Journey, tonight at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to sharing the stage tonight, Heart and Journey will be sharing the musical spotlight in 2010 when they both plan to release new albums. A less auspicious connection is that, although eligible, neither band has been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Luckily, the Wilson sisters were honored with the Founders Award at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards and also earned 2008's top package honors in Billboard's Touring Awards.

The ASCAP award named Ann and Nancy Wilson as songwriters who have pioneered contributions to rock music both by inspiring and influencing other songwriters.

After decades during which lesser music has come and gone, Heart's music continues to be played by fans and covered by other bands. Three of their songs appear in Guitar Hero and Rock Band video games, and the sisters appeared on "American Idol" earlier this year performing "Barracuda" with Fergie.

Similarly, Journey was named one of the top grossing touring bands last year, too.

The shows that the bands have done together and separately this year have been met with sellout crowds and critical acclaim.

Both bands came to prominence in the 1970s and spent time together and apart during the past 35-plus years. While Nancy and Ann Wilson continue to be the heart of Heart, Journey has gone through several personnel changes, relying on the power of the music to bring them successfully into the 21st century.

Journey is currently fronted by lead singer Arnel Pineda, who was discovered thanks to some videos of him singing Journey's music on YouTube. Pineda, who is a successful recording artist in Asia, debuted as Journey's lead singer in early 2008. The band's most recent album, "Revelation," was certified platinum last year, too, joining 10 of the band's previous albums to sell more that 1 million copies.

Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" was cited as the most downloaded song on iTunes earlier this summer.

Founding members lead guitarist Neal Schon and bass player Ross Valory continue to tour, bridging the past to the future.

Other hits the band charted and are likely to be included in the show include "Faithfully," "Open Arms" and "Anyway You Want It."

Heart will also spend time on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Dog & Butterfly," their double platinum album that found its way onto the charts via the title track and "Straight On."

Next year's album is being produced by Ben Mink, who also produced Ann Wilson's solo effort, "Hope & Glory," in 2007, and is slated for release early in the year. At the ASCAP awards, "Sand," a song for the upcoming album that remembers the passing of Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, was debuted.

The sisters are also branching out next year, with the publication of a children's book, "Dog & Butterfly," written to honor the 30th anniversary of that album.

Sounds like Deen may have sang Stay Awhile, provided the person reporting this didn't confuse it with Still They Ride. Both songs certainly suit that ethereal voice of his.

As I thought. Still They Ride. How do you screw that up?

Both of those articles are bullshit. First off, they didn't replace SP in 1991, and then to compare Revelations to their former sales is ludicrous, given the way the packaging impacts the sales numbers. There are lies and distortions every time you turn around with this bunch. WTF???

CONCERT REVIEW: Heart and Journey show proves that claassics improve with ageBy Stephanie Caltagirone
Reading Eagle Correspondent

Rock bands Heart and Journey may have played decades-old music during their concert Thursday night at the Sovereign Center, but it only proved that the classics really do improve with age.

While Journey is sporting a new lead singer, sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson remain at the heart of Heart.

With Nancy's hard-rocking guitar and Ann's amazing, distinctive voice, Heart performed an hour of well-known hits and a couple of covers that rivaled the originals.

Seventies hits "Barracuda," and "Crazy On You" sound just as raw and vibrant as they did 30 years ago. Ann's rock-goddess wails in "Straight On" and "Magic Man" hit every primal vibe.

"What About Love" and "Never" lose the overproduced 1980s qualities from the albums and simply get to rock out.

Nancy's lead vocals are lighter than her sister's but just as evocative on "These Dreams" and "Back to Avalon."

And because they do it so well, a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" feels like it could have been written especially for Ann.

With the addition of lead singer Arnel Pineda, who was discovered by the band on YouTube, Journey has infused new life into their show.

From the soaring heights of "Only the Young" to the sharp beats of "Separate Ways" and the sleek melody of "Lights," Pineda knocks them all out of the park. Yes, he sounds very much like former lead singer Steve Perry, but his energy and enthusiasm makes each song seem fresh.

Neal Schon's intricate guitar work remains the backbone of the band and he displays his consummate skill on "Stone in Love" and "Wheel in the Sky." Bassist Ross Valory continues to lay down the rhythm.

Jonathan Cain's keyboards figure prominently in "Faithfully" and "Open Arms," while drummer Deen Castronova displays his vocal prowess on "Stay Awhile."

While "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" was conspicuously absent from the playlist, "Don't Stop Believing" and "Anyway You Want It" rounded out the evening and sent the audience out into the night with new respect for the classics.
