Todd Rundgren's innovation

Postby Ehwmatt » Sat Sep 12, 2009 5:51 am

Todd's out performing his giant concept album A Wizard A True Star live in its entirety for the first time ever. He's filming the shows for "Internet Pay-Per-View," which gives ya the show plus backstage goodies for $20. I think it's a great idea, if a bit pricey (most new concert DVDs are under $20 these days)

What do you think of this concept? I'm not sure if it's been done much, if at all... maybe someone like Springsteen or U2 has pulled it off.

Edit: OH, and btw, I was at the Akron premiere on the 6th... it rocked!

I'd love to see Utopia regroup and pull off all of Todd Rundgren's Utopia live! Now that would be something.

It might behoove you to purchase the concert then. Todd promised a "Special Guest Opening Act" and, since his AWATS band already had Roger Powell and Kasim in it... the special opening act was indeed 3/4 of Utopia minus Willy Wilcox playing ALL Utopia songs! Fuckin incredible. I was expecting them to do a few Todd standards then do AWATS... instead we got Utopia! But yeah, I'd love to see that self-titled album. Let's hope the Utopia reunion is next. I talked to Roger backstage, he's got a wrist problem which prevents him from playing a ton, but I think it has gotten a lot better (I mean obviously, he's playing). I also know Willy Wilcox isn't in at least Todd's good graces, if not the rest of the guys as well...

BTW, even though AWATS is campy and all that... it truly was great live. It's rare nowadays when you get a concert that's a production as well. Todd had all these crazy outfits and the stage set-up was neat and the rest of the guys were in all white suits. The music just straight up came off better live too.

The Utopia set from the Akron show 9/6 is as follows:

Road To Utopia () - They played the electronic intro w/ the lead guitar over the tape, figured they were teasing us and they'd launch into Todd material... nope!
Libertine ()
Abandon City ()
Back On The Street ()
Hammer In My Heart
Trapped
Utopia Theme (shortened)
Caravan
The Last of the New Wave Riders

That's pretty cool. Too much post-Ra stuff, but still cool. I like the first three Utopia albums best (i.e. the proggiest), and a few other songs.

My faves are prolly Adventures, Utopia, and Oops Wrong Planet. I love it all though. Todd+Utopia are way up there in my favorites for sure

Hahaha. His wife still looks pretty damn good - she used to be in The Tubes and was one of Todd's backing vocalists back in the day! His kids are really nice too. One of them, Rex, is a minor league ball player
