My name is Bobby Standridge and I'm a Rush-a-holic. Seriously, the impetus for creating the YYZ video was twofold. First, the song is simply astounding and deserved a video accompaniment. Second, I needed an excuse to practice my newfound "skills" in the wild and woolly world of computer animation. So, here I am, and here it is. It has been such a thrill for me to share my affection for the band with the fan community. What a devoted bunch!

On a technical note, the video was created with 3D Studio Max R3 and hand keyframed using a video reference of me air-drumming along to the song. Being an older version of the software, the inverse kinematics tended to bog down after a few hundred frames, so I had to break the video down into many (un)manageable pieces. Adobe's Photoshop CS and Premiere Pro played key roles during the compositing and authoring phases.

The YYZ video took about a year and a half from conception to completion (end of 2003), and was the culmination of two years immersion in animation technology. Basically a starter project, I used it to practice all the skills I thought I knew while attempting to create a cinematic feel that captures the spirit of the song, an instrumental ditty about flying into and out of Toronto, Rush's hometown.

The drums on Party's Over are heavily underrated, imo... that's a nice jazzy groove, especially in the intro

As mentioned... anything from good prog bands like Rush, Genesis, Dream Theater etc... the drummers in those types of bands are truly amazing. Unfortunately for me, when it comes to great drums, well "I know it when I hear it," but I don't keep a big list in my head of my favorite drums.

Deano, I love you, but honestly I think you forget to think sometimes :-)

Why does everyone immediately assume that being "great" at something means being some sort of fucking technical monster?

What about originality, style, emotion, etc...

That drum lick from "In the Air Tonight" is fucking classic. You can tell a Phil Collins song from a fucking single snare hit. And I'm no cheerleader for Phil, just a musician that respects his abilities.

I was listening to Patty Griffin's "One Big Love" on the way back from getting Woodford Reserver and some turkey burgers today and thinking what a great drum part on that song.... nothing technically special... but goddamn what feel.... think Weinberg on Born in the USA...

AWESOME song. I don't know why they never included that on a real album. One of the best B-sides I've ever heard, along with Survivor's "Someone Else's Sleepless Night"

I wish the Elton John/ Ray Cooper W/O the band was still on YouTube. The songs were Funeral for a friend & Tonight. It was performed in Russia in 1979. Now it has disappeared. The video had many scenes of local monuments.The audiences were subdued back then but they warmed up.
