I was thinking it would be the original for some reason (like in the recent Jim Carrey movie, 'Yes Man' . . .) Another studio recording of the song? Really??

I'm sure it would be the original. To use any version in a video production you need permission from the songwriters/publishers. Why would Perry agree to use a re-recorded version (unless there is an extended studio version with Perry on vocals that we never heard)?

Yeah..don't think so... I thought the band was able to re-record the original material w/out Perry's blessing. Are they legally bound if they use a re-record on the new Tron?

Re-recording is one thing, you are doing a cover, which is permissible as long as you pay royalty to the publisher/songwriters. Using a song in a video, movie, commercial, etc. where it is more of a promotional tool requires permission from all the songwriters I think.

First, I think the rumour began because SW was used during the first public promo for Tron 2.0 at Comic Con...but it was not IN the promo. It was played over the loudspeakers and then interrupted by the beginning of the Tron 2.0 trailer.

Second, whenever music is used in film it becomes a visual representation of the music which therefore requires all individuals who recorded the music to give permission. One of the points to the re-records was supposed to be the fact that Journey would be able to dictate their usage without having to get permission from previous members of the band (that includes Smitty, Rolie and Aynsley depending on the material...not just Perry). The only consideration for Perry would be songwriting royalties, which are pre-negotiated. As long as those are adhered to, he has no say about the re-records. If it were the original version than Perry (Smitty and any other band member on any recording) would have to agree. Seems to me that Perry has relaxed on usage to some extent given AWYWI and SW popping up in movies.
