I haven't seen Journey in a few years and boy was I pleasantly surprised by the new lead singer! I saw them with Augieri a few years ago and then again with another front man at Phillips with Def Leppard but I feel like they have finally found their "man" in Arnel. I haven't seen such energy since Steve Perry!! Loved the concert. Brought my kids for the first time and they enjoyed it as well. What a great show. I've also been a huge Night Ranger fan for years and was shocked at what a great show they still put on!!! Haven't seen them since '84 so that was a real treat!! Can't wait till the next tour!!! We are all sitting around tonight watching Journey DVD's and talking about last nights show. Absolutely amazing!!!

Fantastic Concert

This was the first time I had seen Arnel live in concert as the lead singer. He was fantastic with great energy. I loved the deeper tracks that I had not heard live since I was a teen. I love how they change up the music on every tour and play different tracks and not the same ones on every tour. The crowd loved "Don't Stop Believing." Jonathan, Neal, Deen, and Ross were wonderful as usual! This was my first visit to the Amphitheater. It was a nice venue. Great time!!!!!

The concert opened with Night Ranger rockin' the house. They were much, much better than anticipated, particularly how they blended some covers (Deep Purple/Beatles) into some of their own tunes - genius! Freat guitar licks throughout the set and a great lead in to Journey. Thanks. I look forward to seeing you again next month in Charleston, Night Ranger.

Journey was brilliant. Arnel is much more at ease than he was last year. Good as he was last year, he seemed more frantic then, trying hard to be a rock star. Now he IS a rockstar. His persona exudes confidence, he connects with his audience on an individual basis so that one often feels that Arnel is singing directly to him. The band was tight but, aside from Arnel, everyone seemed less animated than they did in earlier years. Maybe it is years catching up with them or perhaps they just enjoy watching Arnel engaging the crowd. Deen's vocals were just as tight as Arnels, what a joy to watch the band with two such talented singers. Neal's licks were fantastic and the guitar/harmonica duet with Jon was just mesmerizing. As usual, Ross kept us entertained with his "talking with his eyes". Great, great performance by the whole band and a very entertaining evening.

Thanks, Deen, for meeting with us prior to the concert. It meant a lot to us (and your Mom really does rock!). And thanks Jeff and ILAA for the great experience.

Journey and Night Ranger at Verizon Wireless

Journey still fresh after three decades

From the looks of the audience gathered at the Verizon Amphitheater Saturday night for the Journey concert, most were likely fans during the band's heyday, when Stephen Perry held court as the band's lead singer, knocking out number one hits with his signature upper octave.

But from the opening lyrics of "Separate Ways" it was evident this was still THE Journey from the 70's/80's – soaring guitar solos, heavy drums and bass, and the unmistakable range of the lead vocals. The only difference: these high notes were being hit by Arnel Pineda — Perry's doppelganger and Journey's lead vocalist since 2007 — plucked from the obscurity of You Tube videos to center stage.

While Pineda has the chops to modernize songs that are well into their third decade of play, he sings the songs in pure Journey style – much to the delight of the audience who clearly came to see vintage Journey. The band threw in a few newer songs from their latest album, "Revelation," but it was clear the enthusiasm was reserved for the classics, which included "Don't Stop Believing," "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Open Arms," "Wheel in the Sky," "Stone In Love," "Lovin,' Touchin,' Squeezin," and "Lights."

Joining Pineda and Journey's founding members Neil Schon (lead guitar) and Ross Valory (bass) on tour this summer are Jonathan Cain (keyboards) and Deen Castronovo (drums).


Night Ranger fires up crowd

There's something about bands from the 80's that make you think they would be just as pumped up performing before an office Christmas party as they are performing in front of a packed house of screaming fans.

Such was the case watching Night Ranger perform last Saturday night at the Verizon Amphitheater in Alpharetta as part of their 25th anniversary tour. While most folks in the crowd were likely drawn to the concert to see headliner Journey perform, you couldn't tell that by the reception from the fans who cheered on the leather clad band, complete with the requisite whipping hair.

Night Ranger is one of those bands for which you may be hard pressed to come up with a playlist initially. But from the first strains of "Sister Christian" and "Don't Tell You Love Me," the memories will quickly come back, along with the lyrics. To be sure, the crowd needed little prompting from lead singer Jack Blades to fill in the chorus on encore "(You Can Still) Rock in America Tonight."

Original members Blades (bass/vocals), Brad Gillis (guitars/vocals), and Kelly Keagy (drums/vocals) were joined by guitarist Joel Hoekstra (who is also the current guitarist for Broadway's Rock of Ages), and keyboardist Christian Cullen on tour through October.

Yeah, as slow as they walked in, they probably had been standing for 3 hours walking from the car to their seats.
