When Perry joined they went from jam band to radio band. Every album starting with Infinity was better than the last until ROR. Sure Arnel recharged them but can they strike gold twice?

Arnel's a draw for media and concerts but not sure if he's "part of the band" when it comes to creative input. That might be good to see happen. Will Jon let it happen or is AP destined to be simply the hired gun?

Is Arnel the type that lives and breaths the creative parts of the job or is he more of a replicator rather than an innovator? Can you see him driving down the freeway and having something like Who's Crying Now starting to take form in his head?

Time will tell.

I can't tell you how many twitters I've seen where the fan is just discovering that Steve Perry is an Asian guy and they didn't know SP was no longer with the band. And then there are the OMG - Arnel sounds just like Steve Perry!!! It's all new for these folks.

Great point -- it's been amazing to see a new, younger audience discovering AP for the first time. In Pensacola, I was standing next to two guys that looked about 17 or 18 wearing t-shirts and ball caps. when Arnel hit the stage, they both got really excited -- one pointed and said, "Look! There's the guy!!!!" They also were ecstatic when Deen Castronovo was standing there at the end of Night Ranger's set, and handed them one of Kelly Keaggy's drumsticks... LOL!

The crowd at the arena in Orlando really seemed to love the show and Arnel. Immediately after the show I heard a ton of comments around me and then as we were exiting with people inside the arena and people were really discussing Arnel and Perry. Every single comment I heard, which was a lot, was Arnel was fantastic or sounded so much like Perry or that even some fans that were asked who was better said Perry was better but still all raved about Arnel. It was definitely a great concert in Orlando. So I feel new crowds seeing Journey who haven't seen them since their younger days or new fans will be drawn back for more concerts in the years to come b/c of Arnel with them and their great musicianship.

I tried to estimate how many were there. It was Wednesday and I always felt like maybe eleven thousand would be there compared to 18 thousand it holds. If it would have been a Thurs, Fri or Sat I knew they would have almost filled it b/c they did in Tampa last year. It was close to sold out last year at an 18,000 facility but they had cheaper seats. This show didn't. I never saw much promo for it and a lot of people I know didn't even know they were coming. They closed off the nosebleed section and had a big crowd that pretty much filled the rest of the arena. So maybe thirteen thousand. I don't know. But when I looked around up at the upper sections they looked completely filled it looked like or very close to it, and the main floor was. Maybe another attendee can estimate how many were there.

As long as AP holds out, they can pull off another 2 or 3 albums. Considering that ROR only had 3 (4?) strong tracks, a couple ballad types and what could be considered filler for the rest, it becomes clear its doable.

Arrival suffered from too many tracks. Good as it is, it could've been a tight little cd with 10 songs tops.

I voted, I hope it's a good one, because I do.

However, this is my take on this matter. There is absolutely not way this band will ever, ever, ever have a hit without Steve Perry, hell if Perry came back they won't get get a hit record, this band is so far gone it's not even funny anymore... if they were gonna have a hit, it would of been with Augeri, the man was so much more appealing and marketable than Arnel Pineda, who cares who's a better singer, Augeri was a stud and the ladies loved him, and Journey didn't make it then, what makes them so special today? apart from trying so desperately to emulate the Steve Perry era legacy sound.

I will probably get a lot of flack for this, but what the heck, you only live once LOL. I agree that Steve Augeri is a much better draw toward the female demo as far as sex appeal goes (the man is what a lot of women like....very endearing, charming, sincere, good looking....and sexy too.) I think Journey's biggest problem in this area, is not the front men of the group though,it's totally the fault of the founding band members (they have tarnished their own reputation). All of them lack loyalty(which is amusing because they seem to demand it of the fans now),respect, appreciation of the past (and the fans) and frankly they radiate utter "assholyness". Most women I know aren't attracted to those particular qualities in men. Don't really want to be "entertained" by a group of individuals who mock me as a fan, trash former band members that I cared about and that I frankly don't like as people anymore.....let alone don't respect. Journey's appeal or lack of it really has nothing to do with Steve Augeri or Arnel Pineda to me personally....it's Neal,Jon and Ross that I don't care to see/hear play. Have other artists available to me I would much rather support. Case in point... Loggins and Messina will be in town next month and I am sooooo going to that concert!!

He just "wins" by default, due to the company he is keeping these days. Ross is actually the only old timer (who is still a member of the band) that I kinda still like...sort of.

What, have you been hanging around the Perry camp hearing about how the band fucked him? I think it's the other way around. Since I have never cared to delve into the personal lives of band members, I guess I'm uneffected by these so called bad people. I guess these fans that keep selling out these venues aren't either. They sure make great music though!

If it's the other way around (according to you) then apparently you DO "delve". Don't fib.

Journey still has fans...this does not suprise me one bit. Todays music is lacking to say the least,of course the young crowd/die hard music fans are digging still having a band to rock out to and enjoy...more power to them. I am talking(responding to another poster) about the main demo that they attracted back when they were in their prime....the women.

For somebody who you think is not marketable, he accomplished these and he's only been with the band for less than 2 years..........

Journey first Album with Arnel
Journey's first album with Pineda, Revelation, debuted at No. 5 in the Billboard Top 200 album charts in the week following its release (released June 3, 2008), and remained in the Top 20 for six weeks. It was certified gold by RIAA with more than 336,000 units sold within the first few days.[16]. It achieved platinum status by October 1, 2008.

(Journey first Album with Perry
Infinity (1978), reached No. 21 on the album charts and gave the band their first RIAA-certified platinum album plus hit singles out of "Lights" (#68 U.S.) and "Wheel in the Sky).

After All These Years peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks on September 20, 2008,[1] giving the band their first top-ten hit in twelve years. It stayed on the Billboard charts for over 23 weeks, making it one of Journey's most successful adult contemporary hits.

Three consecutive sold-out days concert in Hawaii (in record time), concerts in Chile, Japan, China, Phil, Europe -Metal show concerts with rave reviews. Many sold out show in US 2008-2009.

TV shows: CNN, CBS News, The Early Show, Super Bowl Pre-show, Oprah

Magazines: GQ, Rolling Stones, Time Magazine, People Magazine

The success may not be the same as Perry era but worth noting.

BTW, do not underestimate the appeal of Arnel to women, you'll be surprised.

Second concert DVD to be released Oct 2nd 2009
Second album with Arnel in the works
Documentary to be released in Dec 2009

All this from a band that is so far gone, yet had one of the top grossing tours of 2008.

Someone needs to pull their head out of the sand and take a look around. This is the most success Journey has had post Perry.

Sure they are...

Yes, Arnel has a built in fan base (this is obvious)...which could be a double edged sword for the group later on... since their loyalty does not really involve "Journey". But is this fan base as big as the demo they lost, when they dumped Steve Perry? Doubtful! I kinda like Arnel though, for two reasons 1) the shear fact that once again ,reality is slapping Neal ,Jon and Ross in the face, that they NEED SOMEONE ELSE to maintain their success FOR them. 2) So far from what I've read he seems like a nice guy.

Steve Perry refused to work so they moved on without him. Considering he had little/no voice left, never planned on touring with them anyway and has put oot exactly zero since then, I'd say they made the right move. But they waited for him to tour for over a decade, so don't give me this "dumped Steve Perry" bullshit. It's just not true.

And here I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I mean, c'mon, how long were they supposed to put their lives on hold & wait for Perry's return?

+2. I love Perry, but come on, the dumped him line is old. They waited a long time, '86 to '96 the first time, while Perry was not doing anything or messing around with one solo album that didn't go and then did another later. Journey wasn't exactly on his mind.

Except according to all accounts Jon called Steve and told him the band was not willing to wait on his recovery, and had already started looking into hiring another singer....which equals dumping. Sorry... if the band (and their "new" fans) don't happen to like that term any longer, but you can't change the facts that the people involved (all of them) laid out there for everyone through multiple accounts and interviews.

Kind of a forced firing. They didn't want to give up all that money. Passive agressive behavior by Steve. He wouldn't have toured if they waited another two years and they would have had to say the same thing. And like SJ said, his zero output all these years or zero appearances says it all.

Nope...they weigh the good and bad, then follow the path that they think is right for them and then own up to it. You don't get to then re write history when things (such as popular opinion ) aren't panning out the way you want them to.

No shit! SP remained tentative and would not commit. How in the hell was that supposed to work for the band? At some point they had to move on and if Steve has any bitter feeling about that...well, he made his own bed. If SP had ever given the rest of Journey a committment that he would have the surgery and when, things would have been different. They have a fucking business to run. If I had a job and I would not make a committment as to when I would have the surgery needed to put me back to work, sorry, but I'm sure the company would move on.

They didn't actually dump him. He got paid as a sixth member of the band up to 2007, right? And he got paid royalties for Revelation. If you think about it, this is really his first year separated from Journey's accountant.

Recovery? They waited over a year just for him to make a decision.

BlueGin wrote:and had already started looking into hiring another singer....which equals dumping.

They're a band and they like to perform. That's kind of the whole idea! When you have someone that simply refuses to give you any sort of timeline 14 months down the road, that person has effectively gone AWOL. Perry quit on the band. They waited and waited and waited. But we're talking about time, careers and opportunities, and Perry had stolen enough of all 3. It was simply time time to "officially" part ways with a guy that quit a long time ago.

Not sure what zero out put says other than Steve might have had enough of the music industry at that point, and since he was not bound to anyone decided to take advantage of his time away from it. Where is it written that he has to sing if he doesn't feel like it.

Steve Perry refused to work so they moved on without him. Considering he had little/no voice left, never planned on touring with them anyway and has put on exactly zero since then, I'd say they made the right move. But they waited for him to tour for over a decade, so don't give me this "dumped Steve Perry" bullshit. It's just not true.

The other members of Journey took plenty of time off without worrying about "the business". If SP had not called them up to reunite Journey for TBF would they have done it on their own? So now... all of a sudden I am supposed to feel sorry for them about tons of time off that they "supposedly" can't afford because Steve Perry had medical issues to deal with? Not likely.

+1

And here I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I mean, c'mon, how long were they supposed to put their lives on hold & wait for Perry's return?

+2. I love Perry, but come on, the dumped him line is old. They waited a long time, '86 to '96 the first time, while Perry was not doing anything or messing around with one solo album that didn't go and then did another later. Journey wasn't exactly on his mind.

-1........and you know why
