I was at the Oprah / Journey taping

Postby LTS » Mon Sep 28, 2009 1:51 pm

Have been lurking on here for a while, but this is my first official post. Being from Chicago, I have friends who work at Harpo so when Journey was booked on Oprah, they called me and I was on my way to the show -- which was taped on Tuesday, September 15 and being broadcasted this Friday, October 2 (since Oprah is in Copenhagen campaigning for the Olympics to come to Chicago, there will be no on "Live on Fridays").

The theme of the show is Don't Stop Believing. Journey performed 2 songs -- Don't Stop Believin' and Faithfully. Oprah also had a sit down interview with them. Mainly, because of the theme of the show, it focused on Arnel's rags to riches story -- he does most of the talking. They do mention their current CD, the new Manila DVD that is coming out on October 2 AND a movie that is being made about Arnel's life called Don't Stop Believing. They show a tape of Journey's past/present -- shows Steve Perry performing and then Arnel -- no mention of the lead singers between the two). Then Oprah took her photo with them (like she does with all celebrity guests).

The other stories on the show are a homeless african american girl from California who is going to Harvard on a full scholarship right now -- even though she was homeless, her mother instilled the importance of education in her. Oprah invited her to go to Africa with her next time she goes to visit the school she started there. Then there was a hispanic astronaut's story.

Bebe Winans was in the audience. He was there to promote his new cd with his sister, Cece -- they haven't recorded together in quite a while. I really enjoy Bebe and Cece so that was a nice treat to see/hear him. Then Oprah announced a karaoke contest she is having and Bebe will be picking the winner of the contest. Side note -- for some reason I caught a glimpse of Bebe while he was listening to Arnel sing and he was shaking his head in disbelief -- I don't think he could believe that voice was coming from that person.

Things you won't see broadcasted:
- Oprah carrying one her dogs on stage with her at the very beginning of the taping and then us having to wait quite a while for her staff to remove the dog hair from her before they could start taping.
- Oprah complaining about her eyes watering -- people were all over her trying to figure out what was wrong. She looked tired. I do know she was in Canada promoting her movie Precious over the weekend before the taping and then she was on Jay Leno's show -- she just looked out of it.
- Someone in the audience asking if the band members were married -- so the warm-up girl pointed the wives/girlfriends out in the audience.
- Oprah was singing Don't Stop Believin' in all the commercial breaks.
- If there is an uplifting show being taped, the warm-up girl tries to get the audience in a good mood (after all, you have been there since 6:30 AM -- taping is at 9:00 AM) so at our taping they had a Journey quiz and people who had the correct answers won a t-shirt. We also had to sing Don't Stop Believin' over and over and over and over again -- I am very sick of that song right now!

If I remember anything else that happened, I'll hop back on.

The middle men may have been bypassed because of time constraints.

Still, poor Augeri, 8 years and it's like he wasn't even there.

Hopefully, this will be the last of the homeless/ youtube story (besides the movie).
It gets more attention than the actual music. It's been two years already, we get it.

Not to take away from Augeri or Jeff, but the focus seems to be on Arnel's story anyway. If it had been about the band more heavily, then I would expect mention of the other two phenomenal contributors without whom, well. You know. I don't see an issue not going into the Encyclopedia Journeytannica on Oprah for Arnel. So not mentioning SA or JSS is moot. Perry they have to mention. Unless of course they present the band's side in a way that makes it sound like "We had Steve Perry, he went away, now we have Arnel..." and are trying to make themselves look less frontman bi-polar by having selective memory with their own history.

No surprise that it wasn't mentioned--nor should it be. That's called good management--and I'm fairly sure it was purely a management decision. Same reason that you would never hear any of the other singers mentioned if Perry ever came back. Just what kind of "good PR" would they get by mentioning that they shredded a singer's voice on tour, and had to get someone to fill in?

I'm a fan as much as anyone else here, but you have to remember this is a BUSINESS--and a multi-million dollar business at that. The audience on Oprah could care less what the history of the band during the "dark years" was. This is a public relations goldmine, if you don't screw it up as it brings you out to a HUGE audience. You don't go airing dirty laundry on a show like this unless you just want to shoot yourself in the foot.

The time constraints are pretty much the issue. It's not like when Bon Jovi was on the show and pretty much had it all centered on Jon.

If you don't tour for awhile though, the publicity from the show may take a hit. These appearances are usually at the beginning of a tour not the end of one.

no disagreement there, but I doubt this show was planned when the tour was worked out. If you get asked if you want to be shown on Oprah, you don't pass it up! Timing could have worked better as far as the tour went, but you don't decline an offer like this--even if you have to fly Arnel over 3 continents on an airplane for the show.

Yes they do.

I'm still shaking my head over a movie titled "Don't Stop Believin"... about Arnel's life story? That just gives me the ick's. They couldn't find any New Journey songs to use??

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. It makes perfect sense, but finding open venues of acceptable size at this date might be a challenge. I would certainly try to extend the tour to hit the big markets again, if nothing else.

Well Perry to AP...guess SA shredding his voice did not count...or JSS saving their asses did not count as well!!! Call me a Loon all you want but they really do act like asses IMO!!!!

Yes they do.

I'm still shaking my head over a movie titled "Don't Stop Believin"... about Arnel's life story? That just gives me the ick's. They couldn't find any New Journey songs to use??

Don't worry, it's a video presentation of the songs so Perry will get paid also. :D

He better!!

Journey reminds me of my Ex. Just when you think you have seen them at their assyest...they can still pull out more ass and manage suprise you yet again.

Still, poor Augeri, 8 years and it's like he wasn't even there.

Hopefully, this will be the last of the homeless/ youtube story (besides the movie).
It gets more attention than the actual music. It's been two years already, we get it.

What movie??? LMAO!!!

Oh, it's real!

It comes out in December, if I'm not mistaken.

Good God...I am going to become a Bon Jovi Fan!!!

Bet the band didn't expect the extent hoopla surrounding Arnel has gone. He's about to become a household name (if he didn't already from Ellen).

NOprah and his own movie?

Dog hair at a J concert. LOL, what are the critters doing up there?

Knew it, knew it. NOprah can't help herself. This is gonna be funny.

LTS, thanks for the report. The dog hair on NOprah was priceless.

Was it Mcdeamon who mentioned about the negotiation with HBO?

Since when did I become something you can order at McDonald's?

...nope, I am not the source of the HBO negotiations news.

LTS wrote:Have been lurking on here for a while, but this is my first official post.

I waited in vain for somebody to make a joke about Oprah's dog in mortal danger backstage
