WOW, too cool! Lori Carpenter posted this on her Facebook page a few hours ago:

Gregg Rolie performed on stage with Neal and Journey in Austin, TX tonight! Very cool to have long time friends re-united together musically after so long and for the audience to enjoy!

Ok, dumb question but I just watched this quickly -- who's singing the Perry part? Deen?

Gregg's voice is still there. Very nice.

BTW, I was waiting for the flying kick from Neal.

Lula, agreed, it's a good song. :D

Damnit, open the flood gates. Perry and Gregg back in the fold. How incredible that'd be. Cain can stay, Chicago used Lamm and Champlin for years - there are more than enough keys to go 'round. Plus they could hopefully stop using the canned backing vox.

You never know what can happen... don't think Perry hasn't heard about this. Things like this sometimes have a way of making these guys long for the past... you never, ever know!

Wish I were there.

And wow, I can't believe anyone that purports to be a fan of Journey wouldn't know Just The Same Way... hell, it's even on the greatest hits compilations!

Fuckin sad.

Just the Same Way. Linda has video. noschutt.

yes, Marie, quite a night. (would be better with you!!!)

I got the setlist. Deen came to ILAA, said Hi sweetie and kissed me. Arnel held my hand. We were in the RoSs ZoNe, front row. They did Higher Place, Be Good to Yourself AND Just The Same Way. dangit!!!

What a night! I guessed that it was Gregg cuz Linda said that Gregg had recently moved to Austin. I played Mystery Mountain for Jeff, the ILAA host, cuz he had never heard the REAL Journey. hehe I saw Jeff after the show and said "Pay up! I guessed correctly!!" so he took a dollar bill out of his pocket and gave it to me.

I thought I was going to A-Cry B-Pass out or C--soil myself. Gregg Freakin Rolie. dangit

It was an amazing show. wow. I'm not even close to being done. it's gonna take some time to come down. Linda's toast. zzzzzzz.

Did u know that Ken owns one of Neal's SCHON guitar? autographed? schutt!!!!!

oh, and Ricky Phillips walked by. I'm staring at him thinking no way and I just said Hi Ricky. He turned and smiled. sigh.........

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOO YOU!!!! This is so AWESOME!!!

Gregg Freakin' Rolie ... if I'd special ordered a b'day surprise for Debbie, I doubt if I could have done better that this ... we were front row too (thanks ILAA & Jeff). It was one of those experiences that while you are having it, you almost can't believe it. Neal introduced Gregg by telling the story about how Gregg used to come get him at his SF high school & he'd cut class so they could go jam with Santana. Seemed warm, happy, and easy to have him up there on stage with the rest of the guys ... Jon & the Faz on one side, Gregg and his keyboard on the other, Deen singing the other lead. It was just ... great.

Night Ranger kicked ass on their set; Jack Blades is just so damned happy and bouncy that it's impossible not to smile back at him.

Arnel sounded really, really good; seems like his voice is developing more richness as he gains experience and confidence with the catalog. And they played Higher Place. I confess I was screaming and jumping up and down like a madwoman and high fiving Deb (not my usual style); Neal was laughing at us ... guess it was sort of loony (or wiggly), but I was soooooo thrilled to hear that song live again.

All in all, one of the best times I've ever had at a Journey show. Ken, Deb, and I stared out the festivities early at the Hyde Park Cafe (funky Austin local place that serves chicken fried french fries  ) and rocked right on through to late night breakfast food (including Deb's cinnamon roll that was as big as her head) at Katz's. Fabulous music ... good friends ... one of my favorite cities ... doesn't get much better than this.

A few pics below and the Just the Same Way video coming later when I get to work and have decent upload speed. I didn't get a single clear shot of Arnel ... the guy's just a blur ... We got a backstage tour with ILAA; the Listerine bottle is to clean the mic screens. And of course the wind weinie had to have a little fun in Austin ...

Forget Rolie, I thought Deen did an awesome job with that tune!

That sure was awesome to see Rolie in the mix though even if it was just for ONE song. :)

I don't think this could be further from the truth! I know you're just throwing this theory out there as a "What if", but Perry got along with Cain much better than he did with Gregg, and I also don't see Gregg willing to get up there with Perry. I could certainly be wrong, but I think Perry would get up there with Cain before he'd jump up there with Gregg (Who left the band BECAUSE of Perry). Who knows, but I just don't see that happening.

Yep I am in complete agreement Jim!! Doesn't make sense at all!

No real surprise. Rolie tends to pull that song out on his solo shows when Kevin Chalfant is in the area. Good to see him with the band.

What a team player Jon Cain is. This is truly a good person. A lot of people would've been pricks and said no, I'm the keyboard player in the band, etc. Some people wouldn't even let him in the door to the venue (you know who I'm talking about too). But he said hell yeah, let Rolie play with us. He gave a big round of applause too after the performance. The band always has an open invite to any former member. A lot have taken them up on it (WOF ceremony in particular). They're all good people except for MAYBE one or two.

To whoever originally posted the clip, a big thanks. That made my day and its just starting!

Of all the shows on the tour, that one song was the one to be at. May not ever happen again so for those that were there, congrats.

Good clip but I hope to see one closer up.

Deen did an excellent job on the Perry part. Arnel gets the media shine but Deen's their secret weapon. Is there anything Hulky can't do? :D

Nope. Not taking anything away from him....Deen is a good singer....and so is Arnel....but neither one sounds " just like Perry". I've never understood why people would say that about anyone. Vocals may be similar but there are distinct differences in sound, tone, pitch, etc... that makes each singers voice their own...and theirs alone. Reaching high notes alone doesn't make one sound just like another. Deen's voice is distinct and so is Perry's..... so, imo, I don't see how anyone that has listened to both on audio would get them confused.

I can tell the difference on all the other songs between Perry and Deen as Deen's upper register is thinner sounding and a little more muted voice compared to Perry, but this one I couldn't live in concert on that clip. Of course, the sound isn't the best on this clip.

Don't get me wrong here. He's very close to Perry's tone on this one--closer than Chalfant got, certainly closer than Augeri, and Hugo stands out by a country mile. That being said, that little rasp and thinner voice makes the ID possible.
