Neal Schon vs Hugo & Evolution tribute Band

Postby Andrew » Sat Oct 03, 2009 11:21 am

Dude is really going off at Hugo on his Facebook page. Lots of colorful words... But Hugo ain't the only Joutrney tribute band - there's about 50 of the bloody outfits going around.

Why has Hugo got up Neal's nose?

I was gonna post this... very interesting indeed.

Maybe it has to do with the way Hugo looks alike and the way they tend to get mistaken for the real thing by particularly uninfomred journalists? It's not like they are a new band... but I do remember a year or two back, Evo played some show in NY and some dumbass reviewer mistook them for the real thing cuz of Hugo's look... who knows.

Well does it really take that much to piss of Neal??? The simple fact that he looks like Perry may be enough!!!

Skylorde pm'ed me the actual blog entry from neal and I read it while out to dinner with the family...I literally snorted on the beer I was drinking with dinner. Here's the post:

Neal Schon (via blog) wrote:Heads up! ESCAPE the ( Journey tribute band ) will most likely be hitting your town selling this crap as (The Journey Show) Fraudulent and misleading .

Now, Andrew, having said that, Hugo's band is called "Evolution"...Did Neal say something else with respect to Evo that I missed? Or is someone crossing their signals?

He goes on to implicate Hugo by name in later comments... don't know why he fucked the name up, but it's definitely Hugo he's talking about

Interesting. Who knows why Schon is wound up about Hugo. It's disappointing to hear though. I love Hugo's stuff and there are only three reasons I can think of that would wind Schon's clock. 1. Hugo and Valentine have put out better Journey material than Journey over the last decade, 2., Hugo is still capable of singing Journey music in the original key (so who's the real tribute?) or 3. Hugo had Augeri come in and sing a few bits with Evolution. I'm betting option three is what has Schon wound up but options 1 or 2 would be more reasonable reasons. You're on the inside Mac, what's the deal?

And damn, doesn't Schon have better things to do that worry about shit like this? For fucks sakes Neal, go write a good fucking rock song for once in a row and put it on the new Journey record to live up to your bull shit you've been talking since 96. Damn, I would have hoped he was bigger this. How disappointing ...

I think Neal has become/is a more online savy person in past few years. He reads this place more than most of us are willing to acknowledge. He's smart about it...he remains anonymous.

But I sill would love to know whether Neal has put just Hugo in his crosshairs or all tribute bands...The post I labeled above, outlines Escape...and if it's the west coast escape, I can understand his sentiments...

but if he's really meaning Hugo and Evolution...I'm not quite getting it, because Adam Holland (escape's current guitarist) is a fucking monster....a great guitarist and 100x better than Eddie Jelley, evo's previous guitarist....

In that case Neal, if you're reading, mind PMing me for my address? I buy all your stuff, can I get a signed CD or two and oh yeah, one of those signature LPs now that you're not playing them any more? Maybe two of them? I'll pay shipping

Dude, I agree. Holland kicks ass! I seen them (Valentine) last spring in NYC and Adam (the original Valentine guitarist) rocked. The only thing that makes sense to me is Hugo is applying too much "pressure" on Journey but who knows. The last I heard Hugo still sings the Journey stuff in it's original key. I think it sucks Schon has enough time or is insecure enough to worry about stupid shit like this. I would hope he'd be a bigger person than this. WTF does Schon have to prove to anyone? If you're reading Neal, grow the fuck up. Jeezus.

Will someone please cut and paste Neal's comments here?

my theory is that it's something similar to the Survivor problem from a few years ago. Promoters are likely billing Evolution as "Journey", NOT tribute band. One usually doesn't flip without good reason.

I read somewhere (probably here) that on Hugo's band banner, the word "Journey" is on a very large font while "tribute band" isn't readable unless you get closer.

Schon's just putting on a show for Perry. He wants the old band back together so bad, he can't stand it. He's slamming Hugo as a show of love for Steve Perry and the legacy they created together. It's all internal politics.

Wonder what NS would do if a tribute band had a short Asian dude singing lead?

Yeah - with people using the artwork and the name Journey inappropriately. And if it's true, he has every right to be pissed off. Being a tribute band is one thing. But if someone is using the Journey logo and misleading people like Neal claims - it is not acceptable. He has every right to want to protect what he has built with Journey.

I would agree, that's a little misleading and sneaky, if that is what happened.
