Just Watched 2001 DVD With Augeri...And...

Postby Enigma869 » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:13 am

Much to my chagrin, I just had a two hour power outage so was forced to watch some videos on my iPod Touch. After watching the 2001 Vegas show, the production quality of that DVD is sooooooooooooooooo much better than the new one that just came out. I'm almost shocked by the difference in quality. I'm beginning to think that the lighting at the Manilla show was dreadful, because the DVD is VERY dark, and as a result of which, it suffers in the finished product.

The 2001 DVD really is one of the better ones - and it really is a lot better than the Manila DVD. I do though think it would be smart to wait until the Manila blu-ray is in the stores. I don't really think Dean however is THAT good - he's got a great voice, but his drumming really lacks some feel, like Steve Smith on Forever in blue or Jeff Porcaro on any damn song he did. Arnel and Neal is on fire, Ross looks to be ready for his final rest, and Friga got to start having some fun!

It's just nitpicking though, cause it's a really solid DVD, but a few parts could clearly be better (especially the Friga part... come on man, it looks like you're having your prostate examed for gods sake)

Yeah, I don't understand what's going on with Jon but he sure doesn't look like he's into it anymore.

Yeah, to me it's almost like they tried to hard to give us an untouchable product with all of the camera angles, and slow motions and what not. I agree that the Vegas 2001 DVD is the best out of them all, and is straight and to the point. After all, I think that's what makes a good concert video worth watching. Parfait, as far as Cain, I said the same thing. He looks like a dead corpse out there. There is something called pretending you know. It's actually really easy to do.

That 2001 DVD is incredibly good. From that great intro into the Sep Ways to everything else... setlist, crowd shots, performance, Neal sounded way better in those days tonally (his playing hasn't slipped at all, don't get me wrong.. just his sound), and everything else. The sound is WORLDS better and the video is much brighter.

My friends and I used to fire that DVD up and jam along to it, that's how we learned to play all the Journey stuff back in the day. Those were the days...

Gonna have to disagree with a lot in this thread. I think Neals sound has gotten a LOT better since the Augeri days. I still think Manila > 2001, for the simple fact I can't stomach Augeri on Journey material (some people can't stomach Arnel, that's what these threads are for though right? opinions.)

Personally, I dig the Houston 81 show over them all,
including the DVD that came w/Revelation.

Though not as technically advanced image-wise,
that show is absolutely KILLER and it doesn't get
much better than that, seeing this band in their
prime.

Not dissing Mr. Augeri or Arnel on this either.

The band just sounds so tight and incredible.
Neal's guitar tone, while more simplistic technology wise
(ie not so many effects/gadgerty), is simply at it's best
and hell, the Whale was actually a real piano back then

It really is. I can't believe that a few years ago, I didn't even have interest in seeing it. But I'm glad I bought it!! Now that y'all have mentioned it, I may need to spin that baby again soon. Maybe even run all the live dvds for a rainy day Journey-thon (since I still haven't seen the 2008 Vegas one  )... 2 Steves, an Arnel and a Pizza Place.

That would make a fun night. I could see having some friends or family over, eat, drink and Journey out. :D

It would take more than a night to cover it all though.

Yep, the 2001 DVD sound quality is TONS better than the new one. The Manila DVD sound quality is poor at best. I have a Firefest DVD that has better sound quality than the Manila DVD. It should be a lot better ...

And Augeri was a lot better than he gets credit for ...

I guess that depends on who you talk to. There was a certain faction of people who thought Augeri was the greatest vocalist to ever grace a stage. I actually like Augeri's voice but not for Journey material. He simply didn't have the pipes to sing their catalog and struggled mightily. It's certainly not his fault. I think Augeri fans simply were and are a bit too sensitive if anyone dared to criticize their dreamy, red leather wearing, perm boy. At the end of the day, I'd be thrilled to be able to sing as well as Augeri. I just always believed that his voice was far too thin and had zero power for a catalog that required a whole lot of power!

I completely disagree. The 2001 DVD wasn't even mixed the way I like 5.1 to be mixed (center was't utilized). Manila DVD is better in every way in my opinion.

I've watched the DVD and love his delivery of many songs, but his voice just doesn't have the power for many Journey songs and his tone is more subdued, not as bright, so for songs like Separate Ways lacked the energy needed live for me, even though he gave a very nice performance on SW.

What's wrong with the video??? It's shot on a dock and shows all of the members and has a bit of a storyline. It's a bare bones video with no ridiculous special effects to take away from the song and make the video supercede the song. It was the 80's, and for it's time, it's a pretty cool video. I don't need stupid shit like The Cars did or the outrageously stupid, though successful, Thriller video. Journey let the song carry the video, and not the opposite. I can respect that.

Augeri's voice just didn't have the power live AND his live pitch was horrendous, not just on a few notes, but on entire songs. (And I LIKE the guy).
Also, wasn't the Vegas DVD was majorly "sweetened" after it was recorded? Maybe I've got that wrong.

I guess everyone has their own perspective. I think that the Manila DVD is a train wreck when compared to the 2001 DVD with Augeri. Let me make it VERY clear that I think Arnel is a FAR more capable vocalist and that the setlist in the Manila DVD is head and shoulders above the 2001 DVD. That said, it's so freakin' dark that you can't see a damn thing and the camera angles are atrocious! I'm not pissed I purchased it, because it was only $10.00. I just think they could have done a FAR better job putting the DVD together than they did!

I'm fairly certain that Dean said the entire DVD was Memorex and not live. I have no idea if that's true or not, but it's certainly been suggested.

Also, if I remember correct, it was the Vegas 2001 vocal tracks
that were suspected as being used during "Tapegate"

Yeah, that's what I thought. That would explain why the sound was so good. I also think that the band was pretty lifeless in the Vegas dvd. No camaraderie among the band members, etc. I can remember Augeri walking to Neal in a couple of spots and Neal just kind of acting like he wasn't there. I could be mixing that with the Boca Ratan video- I think in that one, Neal looked like he wanted to kill Steve. I'm old, my memory is lame...
I haven't seen the Manila deal yet, but I have seen youtube clips of parts of the show, and performance-wise, the band seemed on fire.
They also seemed that way in the Revelation dvd, though Cain just kind of stands there...
