Fans' Suggestions to the Band on New Journey Album

Postby Jana » Fri Oct 09, 2009 7:15 am

It would be nice if this thread didn't take a horrible derailment or two, b/c then maybe Neal would actually see this. I don't hold out hope, though.

I would like to see them going in the classic rock vein again like Revelation but would love to see them incorporate some of the beautiful melody that Arrival had also, and sophistication.

Re Arnel: I would like them not to rush the CD so that Arnel can really have time with the songs and give a very polished delivery, and that he works with a speech coach on his diction to be even more improved.

I feel with the direction they've been going and with Arnel's powerful vocals with such great range and richness to his voice and also Neal seems to be inspired with his playing that this can be a great album if they take the time. And don't forget some ballads.

I'd like something with a bit of the raw edgy energy of Generations, mixed with what we'll call "melodic Journey" (you know the sound), and some of the experimentation/variation of sounds of Arrival. Basically, do Journey with the big choruses and everything, but push the boundaries a bit. There's been some good experimentation since '96 (One More, Livin to Do, We Will Meet Again, Walking Away from the Edge and other parts of Red 13, Out of Harm's Way, What I Needed, etc). That experimentation got diluted a bit on Revelation. Something like Red 13, but with the big Journey choruses/backing vox would be pretty good.

Also, push the lyrics a bit on this one. They can do deep, meaningful lyrics when they want to. It would be nice to hear more of that, as it gives the songs a bit more substance.

Don't think he was talking about the internet.

...Advice for the next album. More rock, less tinkling. Let Arnel write, I'd like to hear what he has to say. And make Deen change his hair. All must stop wearing Ed Hardy, asap as well. That's all.

I'm hoping to hear Deen either by himself or as a duet with Arnel.

I would also like to see some outside help with the writing like on Arrival. Hopefully, we'll get some deeper writing than we got on Revelation. That album was awesome, but the writing/topics were pretty superficial.

Make it a reunion album, with accompanying tour - or call it quits. Seriously.

I say just put out the much anticipated Journey: Christmas album!

Really, I'd like this band to think outside of the box, now that they have the right voice, they also have someone from a different background who has many different outlooks on life itself, and I feel that could make very interesting stories as far as lyrics are concerned. I say remove all the cliche's and try to hit area's that come off more as reality other than the same old " I love you, you're leaving, but I want you back" stuff. Revelation was great, and had many upon many bright spots, but I think the band is more capable of thinking elsewhere and coming up with something that could knock our socks off if they bring every element possible to the table. Didn't Neal say that they have a chance to really do what they want other than doing what the label wants as far as being crammed with limited possibilities? Either way, this will be bought, in my hands, and I'll dig it.

Well, since Neal has supposedly said that the
next album will be a concept album, here's what I suggest.

Do like Dream Theater did a few years ago with the the
fan-favorite song Metropolis: write an entire album that tells
the whole story that the song alludes to.

Journey should do this with THIER biggest hit: DSB!
Tell us about the small-town girl; what happened to her?
The city boy, the singer in the smokey room???
All thier lives could be wierdly intertwined...

And hell, it sets the band up for retirement because then they
can turn it into a broadway musical/rock opera and just keep cashing
in on that god damned song forever

I was thinking the same thing: a concept album with DSB as the theme and Journey itself the center of the story.

There's no fuckin way Friga could write a concept album, lol. It'd be cool though. I don't know if i want them milking DSB any more though. Generations, for its very apparent inconsistency and musical flaws, did have some nice "story songs..." FITH, Better Life, Never Too Late, Beyond The Clouds, Out of Harm's Way...

Sure...
I live w/Three Lovely Ladies and I
DEFINITELY know when the female species
is yelling at me

And yes, Steve perry WILL be on the this album
but only in spirit...
He will be the protagonist for the "Singer in the smokey room"
part of the story, and if Neal & Friga are doing the writing,
he story will have a very unhappy ending

sounds like a minor lyrical adjustment would have to be made. Otherwise, you get "Chestnuuuuuts roasting on opennnnnn arms", and that just conjures up bad thoughts...

NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

As suggested on a thread a while back by someone, I would like them to add two bonus live tracks from the Manila concert to the new album. I would choose What I Needed. I haven't decided about the second one until I watch both DVDs.

I'd like to see them re-collaborate with Jack Blades.
For my money, tracks like "Remember Me" and "Never Too Late" come closest to rivaling the Perry years in terms of quality.
In the case of "Higher Place", I'd argue it even exceeds them.
Blades provides the necessary missing X-factor to the songwriting mix.
As Monker has pointed, the Schon/Cain stuff is good, but sounds a little like Bad English at times.

I'm also up for Arnel contributing, just as long as he's got the goods.
I'm a huge fan of Augeri's non-Journey work, but his solo contributions to "Generations" ("Butterfly", "Believe") were negligible.
