btw, so far, I see nothing else wrong with this dvd from what I can see on youtube. Never Walk Away sounded fine.....(although I really wish Friga would stay off the fucking guitar unless absolutely necessary)....

Probably done to combat any nerves Arnel may have had that night or to ensure that he didn't mess anything up since it was being shot for a DVD... just a thought. I've seen a bunch or other bands do that too for the lead singer, even when he's the guy who wrote the song, but hasn't sung it for a while, etc.

Isn't Change for the Better the Revelation song you like? I can't remember. But, anyway, I thought it was outstanding on the DVD.

Rob Halford uses one religiously in Priest....and when I reluctantly saw them this summer, It was dreadfully obvious. The guy had nails in his feet, head down, reading the words off the thing. Awful!

As far as whether or not Journey currently uses one on a regular basis with arnel, I'd be interested to hear anyone speak with knowledge to this....but I personally feel that these things are fucking crutches.

When I was in a cover band, one of the singers we had, depended on a music stand with a book of lyric sheets. The end result is that he couldn't gig without this fucking stand. We used to jokingly call the music stand 'the sixth member' It ruined a great deal of the vibe for us....if a singer can't remember the lyrics, it's no different than a guitarist needed a crib sheet for the chords. If you have to reference something while you're playing the music, just to get through the music....the quality of your execution goes way down. Pro or not....

Now, so far, from the videos I've seen of the manila dvd, arnel seems to be doing ok (and not standing in front of that thing with nails in his feet) so I'm not as alarmed as I was when I first saw it...

I just don't get the need for it in the first place....I need to watch more and see if there's any other songs where he appears to rely on it.

Yup I noticed the same thing, alot of bands actually do this...stones, eagles, and many others. Sometimes you just forget, even if you write the songs. When singers depend on it, then it becomes an obvious problem.

Just because alot of bands do it, doesn't mean it's ok. I don't think it's any better than canned background vocals or worse, lip syncing. It's not like the singer is busy studying for the cpa exam or bar exam all day. It's his job to remember this shit...

Yep, noticed that too. I haven't seen Journey use one of those since JSS' first few gigs with the band in July of 2006. Interesting decision to use one for the Manila gig. It's gotta be there as a 'just in case' and to combat any nerves, but at least I didn't see Arnel using it too much, if at all.

well, I like alot of songs on revs...but Change for the Better is my favorite. I'll never understand why the band didn't release that and jam it down the throats of rock radio....and watch things explode. That song IMHO, is a Journey hit in any decade or era. It's a great song, but probably a little long for radio at this point. Especially coming from an old band. Probably the same problem with Higher Place, one of my top 10 Journey tracks on any given day.

Quite possibly. I think Change has a slightly sharper hook than Higher Place....which is also one of my top journey tracks.

I agree. I always thought that song and Turn Down The World Tonight would be the next singles and get some radio airplay, but it never happened.

If I'm going to listen to just one track off Revelation and Arrival, these would be the two I'd pick. Both album are great, but Change For The Better and Higher Place are the standouts, in my opinion. With Turn Down The World Tonight and To Be Alive Again taking second place.

yep, all kinds of bands are using a teleprompter. I saw Tom Jones looking at one the other day when he was singing his 'It's So Unusual' song. How many thousands of times has he sung that thing? It's really no big deal - nice safety net in case of a brain freeze.

Why would it not be ok? These guys are human after all. Also, how often did you notice him looking at it? I think it was just there as precaution for nerves.

+1 I sing along with the radio and know a ton of songs. I'm by no way a pro singer but I would tend to think that if I was singing these songs night after night, I'd know the words at some point. Just sayin'.

You're absolutley right! Singing in your car is the EXACT same experience as singing for Journey. Tell you what, go out on a STAGE (most people in this world actually have a growing FEAR called stage fright) in front of 30,000 people, DVD camera's rolling, in front of fans that you know are full of "Loons", "Wigglers", "Pinheads" let alone who critique EVERY MOVE including flipping your hair, showing too much teeth, or singing a instead of A, and we'll see if your heartbeat seems to not want to JUMP OUT OF YOUR CHEST at any minute, or you mouth completely locking up on you at any givin' moment.

All of this in the midst of singing songs that are made for a two hour set list, who are known as recognizable songs sung by one of the the most successful 80's bands of all time, sung by a man that has the vocal capability of being completely FLAWLESS and having the presence of lighting scorching down on you every little nudge you make onstage with 30,000 eyes burning holes through your soul just waiting for a mess up but at the same time expecting the world out of you. Then you must deal with the fact of self doubt at this point as proving it to yourself that you could pull all of this off in front of the man that hired you off youtube in the first place. Something tells me that this, compared to singing in your car, could make you forget at ANY NERVE RACKING MOMENT the middle bridge of STONE IN LOVE in the matter of a split second. By the way, we'll see how you respond when you subconsciously know you missed a note that you should of hit and see where composure takes you in the midst of all of this. :lol:
