Journey in Manila DVD Poll

Postby SultanOfSwing » Sat Oct 10, 2009 2:21 am

Base on different opinions here after one week release of this new DVD, or by watching it on YT, I want to know who really like or dislike this DVD. I haven't bought mine yet, but I will be buying for sure this weekend. Let me hear what you think. Here's the poll.

Just watched all the YT clips.
After reading some of the comments I feared the worst, but I think Arnel's diction problems have lessened.
The guy really brings it.
Deen and Jon both look tired as shit.
Knowing the concert setlist in advance, I was pretty sure I wouldn't be buying the dvd (throw in FTW/Anytime and Patiently/WCTNGOF, and then you have yourself a deal).
That said, I can't find alot of fault performance wise.
Neal, as always, is the main draw.

I bought it, and I really love it! I've enjoyed "What I Needed", "Separate Ways", "Ask The Lonely", "Keep On Running", etc... I don't care for the quality of the sound nearly as much as other dvd's I have, but the performances are solid enough to overcome it. Arnel's dictation has really improved over the last year, and there aren't that many times I even notice it now. It's still there, but has lessened big-time! Overall, I'd have to give it an 8.5 out of ten.

I agree. And it's gotten even better since they filmed the Manila DVD. He absolutely killed it in Louisville and Indianapolis in August, and YouTube videos from the very end of the tour show that his diction is far and away better than in 2008 or even early 2009.

(I assume you mean 'diction.' I don't think he's at the point where he tells some assistants what he wants to write in any correspondence. )

It got better for me each time. Glad Journey is giving us what we've all been asking for, and setting themselves to the highest standard. Kudos to the J-Boyz.

Here's my take on Arnel's dragging of words on some songs, particularly on the song Faithfully, he adds like aahhh (i.e staaaandahhh by me or love affairaaaaahhh, this is the moment where he hides his accent so it's not really noticeable, IMO. I understand some people bother them so much, but I consider it a different spin from the original. 8)

Yeah, but now he's got another problem - Ts/Ds & Ys.

Is it "I want you" or "I won choo"? Is it "don't you" or "Doan choo"?, "I need you" or "I nee joo"? That's a big pet peeve for me with many singers. Pronounce the words, damnit. Don't make sounds that aren't there. I think Augeri had that lazy problem too.

Two reason for this. When singing, it's hard to enunciate that clearly. Certain melody lines make it more difficult also. Meaning, even if you try, it still slurs. Second, it's a way of saving your voice on tour. It creates less stress on the vocal chords by doing the slur. Perry does the same thing.

Not my favorite either, but I accept the rationale behind it.

I called one of our local Wal-Mart here close to where I work, and the lady said it was sold-out  . She said they had 25 copies and all gone. She said just wait for another week because they need to re-order it. But luckily, I called another one and they still have 4 left 8)

Go down there and tell them to get you a DVD. Ask them if they know how much shit you can tear up before they get the cops in there. That'll get 'em moving.

Follow the prompts to get to the "help desk"

They will find the closest wal mart to you that has it.

Wal-Mart is not at fault for it not being there.

I went to two Wal-Marts. The first one they said they got 95 to 100 in and sold out. The guy told me people kept coming in asking for Journey, Journey.
He said he went in the back yesterday and today looking to see if a new shipment had come in, and not yet. He said one guy came in and he had been to three Wal-Marts and they were sold out. They called another one for me and they had two left and save one for me. The girl at that store told me they got in at least 100 or more also there and sold out except one remaining and didn't know when the next shipment was arriving.

I thought DVD was great but it did have some sound issues for sure. Dean, Arnel, and Neal all rocked the freakin house. I think Arnel is fantastic and at this point is my pick of replacement singers. You can tell he really wants to do a good job and I think everyone in the band likes him alot. How could they not!! MY favs on the What I Needed, Turn Down The World Tonight, and Intro to Open Arms. Love, love, love Neal's intro to that song!!
Come back Steve Perry!!

Finally, I bought and watched the DVD this weekend, and I’m truly happy and enjoyed watching it. I’m not sure what are these haters were saying but are we watching the same concert? I agree about the not so perfect quality of this video and there are moments that the lighting out there was poorly executed, it was so dark and I even tried to watch it on my plasma TV using two different DVD's, one on HD DVD and a regular DVD players and came with the same results, but I’m sure it will be corrected once they release it on Blu-Ray. But the sound is really excellent. I connected the sounds with my Harman Kardon receiver and chose the right set up into 5.1 surround sound, the sound was so perfectly clear. I can hear the tiniest instrument sound they produced and vocals were loud and clear.

Fucking Neal was really on fire in this concert. It’s really amazing to watch this guy play and shred his Gibson guitar. Deen was also on fire with his 3 solo performances. How can this guy sing very well while hitting those drums, truly amazing. But what’s up with the thick eyeliner? Cain also did very well, and who said he never smile. He did smile during close up Stone In Love, and also during the extension of Separate Ways (?) when him and Schon went in the front of the stage. And of course Valory still doing that goofy faces while him and Arnel interact with each other.

Arnel, what can I say, he’s really phenomenal performer. He improved a lot since I watched him last year at Planet Hollywood. I truly believe he’s the best replacement singer after Perry. He’s full of energy on stage, running, jumping from the drum riser, spinning ala Jim Morrison, and interacting with fans without losing his voice. I’m so glad he sang two of my favorite songs from Revelation album, Turn Down The World Tonight and After All These Years and nailed them both. I’m really proud he gave his best performance out there in front of his countrymen, and never disappointed the crowd with his unbelievable performance. I truly believe he deserves a decent increase of wages from what he’s receiving right now, and perhaps he needs to hire a very good manager who can re-negotiate with his upcoming contract renewal.

Overall, I really enjoyed and very satisfied watching it and giving this DVD a 9/10 rating. 8)

Why do people keep saying this? He is a full member of the band, per Neal Schon. People act like they think he's getting paid like a plain old OFW. What do you think their gonna pay the most important element in their band, the voice of Journey, $8 per hour or something?

Anybody that doesn't have serious issues with the production of this DVD, we're not even getting into things about the performance or whatever else, has either serious fuckin tunnel vision or is seriously stupid.

I've watched literally hundreds of concert DVDs, I know what a good one looks and sounds like. This ain't one of them.

So have I and it sounds great on my gear. I'm pretty particular when it comes to sound issues. Now I'm beginning to wonder if there is some manufacturing inconsistency that is causing some discs to sound better than others. Now for the hell of it I'm gonna buy a second one. I just give one of them away.

I mean this is obviously subjective. All I know is I've tried it on 3 different systems, a mid-range Yamaha Home Theater system at my apartment, a very high-end system at my dad's place, and my Bose Companion III for my computer and it hasn't come anywhere near sounding great to me, but if you like it, you like it.
