Mother of all music fundraisers

By Pocholo Concepcion
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines - The mother of all music fundraisers for victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy just might be the “Katy Perry Rocks for Relief” concert, which will also feature major rock, pop and dance acts on Nov. 14 at the SM Mall of Asia open grounds in Pasay City.

Aside from Perry — an American singer-songwriter who started with gospel and country music before hitting the charts with the pop single “I Kissed a Girl” — other current and hot artists who have committed to perform are Arnel Pineda and Neal Schon, lead vocalist and guitarist-composer, respectively, of the band Journey, and JabbaWockeeZ, the all-male hip hop dance crew from California, four of whom are Fil-Americans.

Another US-based artist, Nicole Scherzinger — lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls and whose father is Filipino — is reportedly fixing her schedule so she can be part of the concert.

All of these artists, with the exception of Perry, have performed recently in Manila and were very much concerned about the plight of flood victims.

They were contacted by Rhiza Pascua, whose US-based Music Management International is teaming up with All Youth Channels (the company that owns MTV Philippines) to mount the fundraiser.

“Although we want to make the concert as big as possible, the logistical expense is quite daunting,” says Francis Lumen of AYC. “One possible problem is the plane fare, although we hope to get discounts from PAL. We want to keep production costs down so we can donate a bigger amount from ticket sales and sponsorship.”

This early, Lumen has started the ball rolling for cash donations. U92, the new FM radio station he’s operating, has postponed its media launch and is setting aside P1 million from its funds to give to the flood victims. The concert’s official beneficiary is the Philippine National Red Cross, which will supervise how the donations will be used.

Smart Communications and Unilever are coming in as sponsors, according to Lumen.

MTV Europe and MTV USA are also sending in donations, Lumen adds. For foreign donors, Lumen is encouraging cash donations instead of clothes or other items because there is talk that packages encounter problems at the Bureau of Customs.

“MTV Europe asked me how else they can help,” adds Lumen. “I told them, if they can bring in somebody like Sting, that would be great … I need one more big name. In the meantime our US contact, Rhiza, is still talking to other artists. This concert is still a work in progress.”

Okay, so does Joe Perry just think everyone named "Perry" is Portuguese (and a potential relative of his)? What about Tyler Perry? Perry Mason? Perry Ellis? Gracious, this reminds me of the scene out of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" where the father thought everyone and everything was Greek or could be traced back to Greece.

One of the things I learned from living over in the Philippines is, they will publish something that has no grounds of really even happening, in hopes that in doing so it will really happen. Example: During the time I was over there from 94' to 95', every three months a huge story in the media would come out talking about how the America's were going to be coming back to the bases that they had left in 91'/92'. Everyone in town would get happy and freak out and then a month or two later everything would calm back down once they realized it wasn't going to happen. But sure enough, a month or so later, the same claims would be making their usual rounds and everybody would be getting happy and freaking out all over again like the previous times. Have you ever seen 20 women cutting a football field sized lawn with only a pair of rusty household scissors apiece? I have, they'd do that every time when preparing the base for when the American military and all their ships would show back up.

I would say the attached article above is nothing more then that.

Yeah, there was this guy that kept singing Journey tunes for years over there. Everyone thought he would get hired by the actual Journey band.

A lot of things have already changed since you were there almost 2 decades ago. Inquirer is actually a very, very credible source of news. I don't think you should question their credibility based on what you have seen in a small barrio that you used to live in eons ago. Go visit again some time to broaden your perspective a bit.

That he looks so young with the new haircut.

That he was one of the flood victims

That the documentary will be entered in Cannes Film Fest

Arnel presented the $25K contribution of AP Foundation (more than 1 million pesos).

That how Oprah was very impressed with him.

Oprah told Arnel that something divine must have happened ( reason why he's with Journey)

That many went online to talk about Arnel and the Oprah show and were very proud of him.

That (per documentary) he recaptured the soul and the essence of Journey.

That Oprah believes in Filipino talents and if he get the chance to talk to her, to please extend a heartfelt thanks.

That they're so proud of Arnel.

He confirmed Neal Schon's appearance. :D

Seriously, the Philippines is one of those place in my life I've been where I have absolutely no desire to ever go back. I'm not saying that in a mean way or anything. There was a time in my life where the Philippines was the most important place in the world to me. But when I left it in 95', I lost the desire to ever go back. And I truly believe that I will never go back to the Philippines again in my life time. The part of me which was about the Philippines I lost, is the part of me that had to do with music. When I lost the desire to ever be involved with music anymore, that was it and I lost the desire to ever go back there again.

No......He wasn't around during that year I was there. Regardless, no comparision....AP would have blown me completely out of the water any day of the week...and I knew that. I found myself idolizing him during those years that I was singing with AMO. He was my greatest inspiration during those years, as was others in the band.

They may have to postpone this deal since a new typhoon is rapidly closing in on the Philippines once again right now. The third one this season.
