This is bullshit. The guy had
quit. Packed it up and called it a career...one that was
over before it even
started. Herbie believed in him and Neal brought out every ounce of emotion that Perry had. They complimented each other incredibly. Listen to Perry's solo work without Schon and you don't hear near the brilliance.
Agree. Perry possibly could have never gone back to music, and if he had, who knows, may have still been in his 30s trying to get a deal. He was in his late twenties, had spent years in the business and no stardom when Journey called. He was burned out and broke and emotionally drained after losing the bassist. There's some great songs on StreetTalk, but I never hear brilliance as far as a consistent solid album musically and vocally, and forget FTLOSM, except certain songs and some great vocals. Not a superb album with huge success. Without Journey's mix of writers to influence each other and perfect the Journey sound with his emotional, soaring vocals meshed with Neal's guitar, Perry most likely would never have been known as the Voice as far as I'm concerned, not a mega star, b/c Oh, Sherry or Foolish Heart on the radio wasn't going to do it for him. Average pop songs and no one stops the radio in my office going "The Voice" on them.
