I also wonder what everyones problem is with AT&T. I really have no issues with their service. Does it depend on where you live? I always have a very strong signal and the Internet is very fast for me. I have a great plan. Even when I travel I haven't found a problem with it. Is it corporate hate or do people really have issues with the service?

I had AT&T for years here in Baton Rouge, and would have dropped calls, unable to connect, etc... from time to time, especially at "busy" times / places (LSU Games for example). I had switched to Verizon right before Hurricane Gustav hit, and even though our land line was down, I never had any trouble connecting via my cellphone. I know others that are on AT&T that couldn't connect for days. Also, no problems at LSU Games anymore... :)

It could simply be that there are less people on the Verizon network, so at peak times there's less chance of a problem. Regardless, I'm very happy with Verizon, and while I can't say that AT&T was horrible, Verizon has definetly been better...

While the iphone is merely an "above average" phone rather than a great one, the ipod touch is amazing, and you get all the functionality of the iphone except the calling part and the shitty camera. I carry my ipod touch along with a Verizon Mifi and have access to about everything on my macs and nearly every app made for the iphone.

Spot on dude. Exactly what I said with two of my previous posts. Because I'm not someone who needs my phone to do everything under the sun, I'd probably never purchase an iPhone. I also have the iPod Touch and it's truly an amazing device. I guess I understand the logic that some have of not wanting to carry more than one device around with them. For me, I simply don't want my phone to ever be my mp3 player! The only thing that I wish Apple would improve on the iPod Touch (and from some of the comments I've read here, it seems to be the same with the iPhone) is the battery life. It seems like I'm always charging the damn thing!

I love Apple stuff, but it sure seems that they could do a better job with their battery technology for all their products. My laptop is brand new and the battery only gets me about 2.5, 3 hrs (and yes, I calibrated it).

That's one of the reason I got the cell phone I got, was because it came with an additional battery that gave me tons of more stand by time and usage time. Even though, I'm really getting tired of having to plug this stuff (phone & wireless ear piece) in every day or so to get charged. Surfing the net on a cell phone to me isn't that convenient either, or maybe its just me....

Keep in mind, this is the UK version. North American version dropped Oct. 11th. Most of the quirky bugs were fixed, including that god-awful 'chin' at the bottom.....

I can assure you that this thing isn't taking the iPhone down (and for the record, I don't own an iPhone). I think the screen on the iPhone is significantly better from the links you posted. Also, the main thing that makes the iPhone the slam dunk that it is really has nothing to do with the phone...It's the support behind the phone. There isn't a company on the planet that will EVER compete with the Apple App Store! For that reason alone, another company is going to have a VERY difficult time taking any significant market share away from Apple. Hell, the iPhone has already captured HUGE market share with shitty AT&T service. If they ever make their way to Verizon...look out!

Wrong. 99% of the APPS for the HTC Hero are FREE. And seeing how APPLE is only out for money, the HTC phones will come out ahead. Plus I've heard they fixed 99% of the bugs in Android. Apple better get moving if it doesn't want to lose the market....

And if THIS phone doesn't take down the iPhone, the HTC Touch Diamond 2 certainly will. Running Win Mobile 6.5 - the thing is a dream.

seems like roger mcnamee is saying that smartphone companies aren't necessarily competing to get each other's customers, as the entire smartphone marketshare is less than 10% of the cellphone marketshare. most are still using dumbphones.

the iphone has some awesome features & apps, but it isn't quite right for me. i'm glad that palm created the pre with features that fit my particular needs. the pre app catalogue has only 186 apps (none of them fart) at the moment, but they only started stocking the shelves a few weeks ago. i haven't heard much about android apps.

Still not remotely relevant given there are probably 13 apps compared to over 100K for the iPhone! I guarantee you that Apple has far more free apps available right this second than this ass-ugly phone will ever have!

I can't speak for anyone else, but if the picture you posted yesterday is indeed the final product, I wouldn't buy the thing if it were the greatest functioning cell phone ever released! There isn't a phone that Motorola can manufacture that will leave the iPhone in the dust!

John, you contradict yourself with every keystroke. Obviously you go for style over substance. And you claim that the phone is 'ass-ugly', but then claim you wouldn't buy it if it were the 'greatest functioning cell phone ever released'.....Seems to me that you are either an iPhone apologist, or just an Apple fanboy...

That's where you're dead wrong! I wouldn't purchase a phone that was the sleekest looking phone ever created if it sucked and I certainly wouldn't purchase an ass-ugly phone that was the greatest phone ever made. Contrary to your suggestion, both style and substance matter to me! One simply doesn't work without the other!

StocktontoMalone wrote:Seems to me that you are either an iPhone apologist, or just an Apple fanboy...

And it seems to me that you have zero idea what you're talking about. Considering that I already said in this thread that I don't even own an iPhone, I'm not sure how in your world that I could be an "iPhone apologist"! I happen to be a BlackBerry diehard and wouldn't for one second consider trading it in for an iPhone. That still doesn't change the ENORMOUS market share that Apple has. There are always guys like you who loathe a big company for whatever reason. Whether they're legitimate reasons or not is irrelevant, because there aren't enough of you to even begin to put a dent in Apple's vast market share!

Right, cause the 'first' is always the best....

There is no accounting for taste, and most people that DO have one - have one because everyone else has one. Iphone = Nsync. Just because alot have been sold doesn't mean they are good.

Most things that have good numbers sold are pretty much products that consumers feel meet their needs, meaning they are good. I'd like an example of somethign that was sold a lot of but wasn't good, with the exception of junk food. :)

iphone rules mindshare in the usa & maybe elsewhere.

whether the iphone is the "best" smartphone or not, it's got steve jobs' reality distortion field surrounding it. therefore, it is the jesus phone.

Don't feel bad, I only bought the cell phone I have now (Moto Q 9H Global) because I needed a cell phone for when I'm in Japan and the reps at AT&T told me this phone had the right frequency to work in Japan. Well, got there and it didn't work so I had to conduct all my business over payphones while there. Apparently Japan and S. Korea are the only countries that work on a different network/MHz level then the rest of the world.

So....I was stupid for taking the word of the rep working at the AT&T store. Never again will I.

just to clarify - i don't feel bad, as i'm not one of the dumb people using smartphones. i'm pretty geeked out about my palm pre. sorry the at&t rep led you astray. i find that way too many phone reps don't know enough about what they sell.

On the smartphone issue, I have a Blackberry at my part time job and maybe I got a dud but I hate it. It claims it can never find satellites for GPS unless I restart it by taking out the battery, so takes a good few minutes to come back up, and it won't be able to find any again if I power off the handset. But if I don't power off the handset, the backlight turns on every couple of minutes (just lying on a table it turns itself on) and kills the battery in a few hours, so I barely leave the phone on, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I love having mobile Internet/maps but omg. I'll stick with my plain phone.

About the phone automatically turning itself on.....maybe that's what's going on with mine. I go to be with it next to me fully charged and when I wake up in the morning the phone is about to automatically turn off because of low battery.

i find that my battery drains superfast on the rare occasion that i travel to an area that has weak cell service. it seems to use a lot of juice searching for that signal. if there happens to be strong wifi nearby, i'll switch to that to conserve power. so far, sprint EVDO service is working well for me in san francisco.

My phone does that. It's not one of them thar fancy fonez... just a regular non-cool phone (but it IS purple! :D ).
But still... and my sister's whole entire house is a dead zone, so my battery dies every time I'm over there.
