100% Albums

Postby ProgRocker53 » Fri Oct 23, 2009 4:20 am

Out of all the albums you've ever listened to, what ones (without any shadow of a doubt) would you rate as a 100% album?

My choices (yes I went through all my iTunes and albums, which total in the hundreds, to collect these):

Audioslave- Audioslave
Boston- Boston
Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run
Deep Purple- Machine Head
Dream Theater- Images & Words
Genesis- Foxtrot
Guns N' Roses- Appetite for Destruction
Incubus- Make Yourself
Journey- Journey
The Killers- Hot Fuss
Led Zeppelin- IV
Marillion- Misplaced Childhood
Metallica- Master of Puppets
Muse- Black Holes & Revelations
Pearl Jam- Ten
Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here
Rage Against the Machine- Rage Against the Machine
Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream
Toto- Falling in Between
Van Halen- Van Halen

Good call on Van Halen! GnR is another one I forgot about. I won't comment on the others (although LZ and Metallica are good choices).

I knew someone would bring up Thriller (really didn't consider Bad). Despite Thriller being one of the largest selling albums and obviously a very good album, I can't consider 100% because there is some shit on it (McCartney song and another one or two). Bad not even close. Edit: Not to mention Thriller the song sucks. That was all video.

Doubt it!

Behshad wrote:Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force

Interesting calls. Rising Force I would consider, definitely high 90's. Start from the Dark, I can't give a 100% but easily well into the 90's. MAJOR EDIT: I got my albums confused. Rising Force is not 100%, I was thinking Odyssey.

The others, I haven't listened to in full. There are a few that are good on the list I'm sure.

In Absentia was on mine, but I had to force myself to lop it off. While certainly a great album, a 95%+ and one of my all-time favorites, the mellow songs on the record are too "samey" for me and tend to drag on a bit. I don't mind at all, but it detracts very slightly from what is otherwise one of the best albums of the century so far and PT's best offering.

really?!?!? To me, POL pales in comparison to the Survivor catalogue. Granted, the theatrical aspect of POL does absolutely nothing for me, so maybe that's why. I just don't get the high scores for this one at all.

I like the theatre aspect of it, totally understand why it wouldn't be some people's bags. I'm thinking about Vital Signs still. You reminded me how much I'm ambivalent about Popular Girl, so I might have to withdraw my 100% endorsement earlier.

I like Popular Girl. ( I guess). The song that doesn't do it for me on the album is Singer not the Song (but it's still ok). POL had a few good songs on it. SOH, She Gone, and a couple more (can't remember as I haven't listened to it in awhile). But, the rest was ehhh.

Not those two albums mentioned above, but I think part of the problem with some albums is they have 1 or 2 too many tracks on them. Had they stopped at 10 songs, they would've had 100%

Oh I've heard them all, Premonition is a hell of an album.Summer Nights and Poor Man's Son rank among my top Survivor tracks. I'm a huge Survivor fan, probably as much so as Journey.

Great album. I love the first album too. In a lot of respect I like those two over VS. But, I understand the greatness of VS, hence the grade. The first two albums are high 90's to 100% for me personally, but not to everyone else. That's what I'm getting at with my grades.

Agreed. Sad thing is, the way this country is going in about 20 years, our kids are going to be asking us, What's a Chevy (Nights)?

One more thing, don't forget about the EOTT album too. That's probably their best album and I may have overlooked that one as a 100%.

So am I. I think Journey probably had more "A level songs", but album for album and track for track, I think the Survivor catalogue is stronger overall.

I agree, several Survivor albums come close to 100% for me, but honestly, no Journey album as a whole would rate any higher than 92% or so for me. Survivor's catalogue is stronger through and through, but Journey's hits are BIG and very memorable/good.

Is that the JJ cut kept from Crossroads Moment? If so, I haven't heard it yet, but I will listen when I get home tonight, thanks.

no, different band. One from my list. Pure legend in Australia, and regarded as one of the best live acts of all time, but self-destructed before they could break out anywhere else. Their story with the US record labels is one for the ages.

speaking of JJ though, if anyone got his version of Sound of Home that was on his myspace page for a few days last fall, I'd love to get a copy of it.

Probably my least favorite Survivor album (which shows how strong the cataloge is). The first side is pretty strong but the first two songs on side 2, may be their worst two songs (What Do You Really Think is easily their worst song) and drag the album down. Slander and especially Santa Winds rescue side 2. Note: I have that on vinyl hence my referencing to side 1 and 2.

CITG might be my least favorite also. Love the dark tones of it however, and I hear a lot of this album in the heavier parts of Too Hot To Sleep. Santa Ana Winds is one of their best songs, and easily worth the price of admission. You could tell Bickler's voice was going fast on that album though. I think the Tiger tour must have shot his voice with those really high vocal lines (much higher than he was on Premonition).

As far as What Do..., not my favorite, but I love the bridge part which almost rescues the song. If only the rest of the song was on that level.
