Dallas Cop Cites Woman For Not Speaking English!

Postby Enigma869 » Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:22 am

Tito's dream finally comes true! This moronic cop actually wrote "Non-English Speaking Driver" directly on the citation. What a fucking MORON! This guy should be fired, IMMEDIATELY for being too fucking stupid to be a cop! His department claims he will "face more training" This guy seriously needs training to know that not speaking English isn't a crime? God help you poor fuckers in Texas!

Can't generalize to a whole state from an N of 1. But, yeah; this is one of those situations that it's bad enough that he did it, but even worse that he couldn't even see the shit-storm clouds gathering on the horizon as he he was doing it.

While I do not agree w/this woman being cited for not knowing our language,
I also do not believe it's our reponsibilty to know hers. There are plenty
of free programs available and there are absolutely no excuses. Our children and
probably hers, are required to learn a foreign language to graduate from
high school for crying out loud. I had to learn the southern language
to be able to communicate w/the people in my environment.
She's an American, right?!?!?

BTW~ How can you receive a license w/out a general understanding of the language?!?!
Oh, these are my feelings on the whole foreign language issue...not this situation
in particular!! Merci de l'ecoute...

I see your point, but playing devils advocate.............I was in Germany for 3 and a half years. I found the language difficult to learn and only knew key phrases to do certain things I had to do. Not knowing a language is a scary and daunting thing. You want to learn, but when you are older it is not as easy to do......the English language is one of the hardest languages for people to learn. I can see where it would be to her benefit to learn, but I don't think it is an arrestable or finable offense.

While I really don't disagree with any of what you've said, this cop's behavior is simply unacceptable. I used to be a cop when I wanted to save the world (I was a bit young and idealistic), and it wasn't my job (or this dope's) to pass judgment on what the rules should be for the public I protected. You take an oath to uphold the law and this woman broke no law. Whether people should speak English as American citizens is a completely separate, philosophical debate that we would probably be in complete agreement on

The frightening thing about this for me is that it happened in a major American city. Not that it would be acceptable in some ass backwards town, but I would certainly be a bit less surprised if it occurred in backwoods Texas!

You dont need to speak English in this country anymore. We cater to the non english speaking people. Its easy to receive a license they will give you the test in any language. NOTHING pisses me off more than when I pull someone over and they cannot speak a word of English. It makes me Crazy. That Cop may be a moron but I understand his frustration completely!

At the end is that the point: shouldn't be a crime or offense..i went to miami with my family for vacations, and there was a USA police man who was very rude with my dad because he didn't know english, i had to talk for him(with my rudimentary english) and went much better (he even hug me lol!), he only needed a little patience, after all is not so easy speak another language!

We end up having to try to find a Spanish speaking officer to come out. (in our area there are alot of migrant workers) Its a real pain and it often takes alot of extra time. But sometimes they say that they dont speak English so I say Do want to go to Jail?? And, they amazingly start to speak English!! Its the strangest thing!

My husband had our spanish friend doing a ride along one night. They came across a drunk driver Mexican man and my husband used our friend to interpret for him. It took the guy 5 MINUTES of speaking spanish to our friend for him to say TO our friend "habla espanol??" (you speak spanish??) The guy was so drunk he didn't realize they had been speaking spanish to each other for 5 minutes  And they do the same thing normally too. Find an officer who can speak it. And yes, some do fake it because it makes them think they won't have to go to jail or something.

LOL - reminded me of one of my ex's favourite 'embassy brat' stories from when his family was posted to the Australian Embassy in Moscow. His dad got pulled over by a russian traffic cop; he had embassy plates so there was nothing the cop could do, but they would play this game in the hopes that they'd get a 'stop bothering me' bribe. So in the car are my former father-in-law Colin, who was head of embassy security and spoke passable russian, the main translator for the embassy who spoke a dozen languages including fluent russian, my ex who could get by and his best mate from high school back in Australia who was visiting during school holidays, and the only one who didn't speak any russian.
Cop says, in russian, 'Do you know you ran a red light back there?' (The traffic light in question was broken and hadn't changed in 3 years; everyone knew about it and just crossed carefully, including the cops).
Colin says in a strong Australian accent 'nyet polimy ruski' (no idea how that's actually spelled) which is basically appalling russian for 'no speak russian.'
So the cop starts in with 'someone in the car must speak russian.'
'Nyet polimy ruski.'
Russian cop changes tactics - 'Sprechen Sie Deutsche?'
'Nyet polimy ruski'. (By now the translator is desperately trying not to crack and burst out laughing.)
After about five minutes of this, the russian cop came out with 'So what language would you like to be nicked in, me old son?' in the broadest cockney accent you've every heard, cracked up laughing and waved them on.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I agree, but in the policeman's defense.....the article said there IS a law that drivers of commercial vechiles must speak English, so he was probably confused and didn't fully understand the law....granted it's his JOB to understand the law but I can see how he could make this mistake.

While I agree that the cop was a complete idiot, I do not believe that I should have to learn any other language unless I'm visiting or moving to a country where there's a different national language. People who come to this country should make an attempt to learn English since it is what we speak here.

I honestly don't know ANYONE who would make that statement. Hell, I get fucking annoyed just calling a customer service number and landing at an Indian call center (which is getting close to 100% of the time) and getting frustrated that they can't understand me and I can't understand them, and they're claiming to speak English  For me, that's not even the point. Writing someone a ticket because they don't speak English is no different than writing someone a ticket because you don't like the shirt they're wearing. It's simply moronic and there is ZERO defense to it!

I agree is important to learn the local language in case you are moving to another country but if you just are a tourist just visiting, well you can try to learn something but is not that easy and for sure shouldn't be the only reason for get you in jail..sometimes i think some of USA people is too self centered and should have more tolerance, otherwise if some of you visit southamerica should speak spanish aswell

Tough to disagree with you here Carla. I think Americans are FAR, FAR, FAR less tolerant than many Americans claim to be. There are definitely parts of America that are FAR more tolerant than other parts, and I've learned that in my travels. I personally believe that anyone living in a country should do everything in their power to speak the native language (I would think you would almost have to just to survive)! That said, a cop in a major American city citing someone for not speaking English is one of the more fucking absurd things I've ever heard of (And I once had a partner at the firing range take his shoes off when I told him that he was shooting too high on the target)

You're right. I, for one, am not very tolerant. When I'm in line at the grocery store behind some fat illegal alien with 4 kids in tow and another in the oven, buying groceries on foodstamps, exceeding my buying power at the moment, I have just a little bit of resentment. I just can't figure out who I resent more, the illegals or the fucking libs who don't seem to want to do anything to control this horse shit. I'm in a community where there is about 60% hispanics and tons or them are on govt. assistance and those either don't speak English, or claim they don't. They view another pregnancy as a pay raise. (Who's having sex with all these ugly cows?)

This guy should be fired, IMMEDIATELY for being too fucking stupid to be a cop! His department claims he will "face more training" This guy seriously needs training to know that not speaking English isn't a crime? God help you poor fuckers in Texas!

No, the REAL crime here was committed by the DMV for issuing a driver's license to someone that obviously wouldn't know how to read road signs properly and follow simple commands like "pull your car over at the next exit", or "get out of your car because it is no fire" and so on.

People who come to this country should make an attempt to learn English since it is what we speak here.
I think so too.

I, would give it my best shot , but I'm very sure the only thing I'd be able to say in Spanish would be " hello" I think learning to speak English should apply only to the ones who plan on living here for many years and not just touring.
