Deb wrote:Tito wrote:Last time I checked it isn't Jeff Scott Soto and TSO or anything comparable. He's a background singer on the album. With or without him, TSO would've debuted at #5. You guys are really grasping if you are counting this as a Soto victory. That's like congratulating Tim Gorman for playing keyboards on the Top 40 song, "Party's Over." Congrats anyway to TSO.
Wrong. He's lead on, I think, 5 of them.
Paul O'Neill quote:
"Night Castle" is TSO's second non-Christmas rock opera, following "Beethoven's Last Night" in 2000. At its heart is the story of a U.S. Army special forces officer (Lt. William Crozier, voiced by former Journey and Yngwie Malsteen singer Jeff Scott Soto) and his journey to fight the Khmer Rouge in the early '70s Killing Fields of Cambodia. "It's an anti-evil album," explains O'Neill, who co-produced the album with Robert Kinkel. "What happened in Cambodia still breaks my heart. The things humans can do against humans never ceases to blow my mind, but somehow in the end good always wins and gives us hope. I think that resonates, especially with what's going on now in the world."

I disagree. Journey would've sold ok but not as well as it did without Arnel, specifically his story. The story gave them publicity they would not have had. Plus the new filipino fans he brought into the camp. That combination produced a #5, double platinum album.
Back on point, regardless if Soto sang background on one song or sang lead on the whole album, he had nothing to do with TSO debuting at #5. I didn't see any Soto press in the mass media about him being on this album one bit (honestly I didn't even know TSO was coming out with an album. Let alone any Soto news about it. Even on MR, all the Soto news I've heard is about WET) and any new fans he brought to the table for them. He had as much to do with this album as the drummer or the other people sang lead on the album (whoever they are). If you want, all 10 of you, to count this as a victory go right ahead. I'm not losing sleep. But your delusional if you think Soto played a big part in the success of this album...or ticket sales for that matter.

It's absolutely impossible that he hasn't helped their sales. Even if only one person buys the TSO record because JSS is on it.

If that's the case, somebody better tell Andrew to cancel MR Fest II. What will he do without Soto.

I have to agree 100 percent with Tito on the whole post. Though, once you buy the TSO album JSS's voice will be a reason to enjoy it, but had nothing to do with the sales. Arnel did influence sales of Revelation b/c of showcasing his voice on the Ellen appearance and reminding people of Journey and their new CD, the CBS interview, all the press, GQ on him being hired with Journey, People Magazine, etc.

He definitely had something to do with it on account of the promotion/back story... HOWEVER:
If Augeri would have gotten the same promotion back for Arrival as the guy who worked at Gap who got the dream gig, it would have influenced sales similarly.
Hell, if Soto got the gig, the story coulda been the guy who's been singing since the 80s, including for movies and for Yngwie and whoever else he's been with, and there woulda still been a very sellable back story there.
That's all contingent on having a big Wal-Mart deal, of course...
Now, maybe the fact that Arnel was foreign added something, who knows, but I don't think Arnel's promotional power was unique at all...

I agree JSS had nothing to do with those sales. I'm just making fine the distinction that Arnel as a unique commodity had nothing to do with it, just the fact that Journey was all over TV with a Wal-Mart deal, stick Augeri, JSS, Perry, Hunsicker, whoever else in, they move the disc.
