Bob Kravitz on D&C: Brady's better
By: Jerry Spar
Indianapolis Star columnist Bob Kravitz appeared on the Dennis & Callahan show Thursday morning to talk about Sunday's Patriots-Colts game.
Kravitz picked the Patriots to win the game, and he said he gives the nod to Tom Brady in a career comparison to Peyton Manning.
"I've always picked Brady. I have this argument all the time. ... The stats are virtually the same over the years. I think Tom has done more with less, with fewer offensive weapons, and it's hard to ignore three Super Bowls."
Kravitz also had a different spin on the Manning-Brady rivalry: "I think in reality it's more of Peyton vs. Belichick."
Kravitz also discussed Jim Caldwell, who is in his first year as Colts coach after being promoted from assisting Tony Dungy.
"I think right now that he is doing a better job than Tony Dungy has ever done," Kravitz said. "If you look at the two areas where the Colts have improved the most, special teams and defense, those are the two areas where Caldwell came in and said, 'Look, we've got to make changes in our coaching staff.' ... Even though [Dungy and Caldwell] are very similar as far as the way they operate and the way they do things ... he has put his stamp on the organization. I'm very impressed."http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/this- ... dys-betterSounds like an astute guy to me, as far as his point about Brady accomplishing a whole lot more with FAR less talent around him. I've been saying the same thing for years. There isn't a single QB in the history of the league who has won with shittier offensive players around him!
There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Brady played with far less talented receivers than Manning. But let's not lose sight of the fact that these guys are all professionals, and the guys Brady has played with, guys like David Patten, Troy Brown, Deion Branch, and David Givens were a special part in running New England's offense. Yes, these guys are not Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, Jerry Rice, or Tim Brown but they sure as hell didn't make life hell for Tom Brady like some might think. Same goes for a player like Kevin Faulk. The dude is not going to rush for 3,000 yards a season, but he's a player that will help a team win and he is a major asset to the team and plays with the grit most teams would love to have. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl, and he wasn't even that great of a player to begin with and his receivers were Brandon Stokley, Billy Davis, and Travis Taylor. Hardly Hall of Fame candidates aside from a great player in Stokley in his prime.
The games I've watched, these guys outperformed anyone in the league and were getting open, running free and running the Patriots offense quite well. Things Wayne and Harrison were doing in Indy. It's not like these guys played like living hell and Brady had to do everything in his power to win football games without them. The point is, New England is one of the best teams in the league at plugging players into their system and these players simply play well as a New England Patriot. The Pats are just that good of a team with that good of a coach. Hell, Brady might have won the SB with less talent, but he had one of the best overall deep threats in all of football and still lost a Super Bowl with him. I don't buy into that for one second. Even though it is true, it has nothing to do with who's better of a quarterback at the end of the day. The guys simply got it done and were tough to stop.
