Is Carrie Underwood the gold standard for AI?

Postby Don » Fri Nov 13, 2009 2:57 am

Her new album debuts at #1. I know Kelly Clarkson and Daughtry have had great success but to me, Carrie has been really consistent, staying popular in two different genres and hasn't seem to fall flat at all in her post AI career.

There isn't an AI winner or Runner-up (or even a non-runner up, but AI 'grad') that has had the success that Underwood has had. Not only that, but I personally feel that she is far more talented than anyone that has been on that show.

There are others doing well too. David Cook is doing just fine. So is Jordin Sparks with her new album and her first song release.

It almost seems like country music fans are more open to artists like this than the rock and pop world are. And I mean look at even the classic rock bands and artists who have now turned to the country genre for continued success.

I saw on Entertainment Tonight or one of those shows Katherine McPhee the other night. She is a stunningly beautiful brunette, and she had her hair bleached really blond, not even highlighted. She looked AWFUL.

She was on the David Foster and Friends program, singing with Andrea Bocelli. Katherine fell short on the high note twice while singing the Prayer. She was trying to stay with Bocelli and embarrassed herself a bit. She must have pulled it off in rehearsals because I can't imagine why Foster paired her with Andrea. Totally out of her league.

True she is probably the most successful and you're right, that's country for ya. But I'd say Adam Lambert was by far the most entertaining. I never did watch that show religiously like some, but I'll be damned if I didn't catch myself watching every single week last season just to see what song he'd do next. Wonder how his new album will do?

Couldn't agree more. She's a beautiful young woman, but truthfully, I find her mannerisms and singing somewhat annoying (could be because I'm not big on country music). Most talented ever? - meh, I don't know. She's certainly been the most highly promoted. Just not a fan, and I'm betting if she wasn't country she wouldn't have quite this level of success.

Agreed back at ya. She doesn't do anything for me either, I much prefer Kelly Clarkson's voice to Carrie's. The one I can't understand though is Taylor Swift.....not to agree with Kanye here but......any time I've ever heard her perform on a show, I really don't think she can sing......her voice comes across extremely monotone to me. Unlike Martina McBride, she has such an amazing voice!

According to Wikipedia and Yahoo Chartwatch... Clarkson is the highest seller to date. Carrie has had a great run.. but (like Clarkson) it won't last forever...

As good as Underwood is, both of Daughtry's cd's are great. As far as I'm concerned you can't beat batting a thousand!!!!

I think Carrie & Kelly are now AI tops. I'll give it a year after Adam Lamberts 2012 song and album 11-23 release. I heard some today and I thought this is going to be too 90's for me & I liked 8-9 songs. So, I will purchase. I think he should also take up Queen's offer to tour next season and request in the contract that his album be sold. He will sing on the AMA awards and be on Ohrah again plus others. I sense his career is just beginning. He wants to act. He will sing The star spangled banner at Speilbergs award ceremony 12/9 ? and that place will be crawling with movie producers.

I agree, Adam will be the biggest star to come out of AI. I don't agree with signing on with Queen, he seems to be doing alright on his own for the time being. I have to say, I haven't been this interested in a new artist in a long time, the guy can really sing.

Carrie Underwood has a career most new artists can only dream of and as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, she is pretty much guaranteed a career for life. She'll always have a home and a stage there as long as she doesn't pull a Britney. Even great artists in rock and pop can fade out pretty quickly when the music scene changes, but country music fans seem to be more loyal. The exception is Journey fans, but then maybe we're all just nuts!

I'd like to see her do a straight up rock album. I think she's got the chops for it.

I think she could do a solid rock album too. I liked her performance of 'Go Your Own Way' though Lindsay Buckingham was a bit strange here. Either it threw him off not performing this song with Stevie Nicks or he was trying to upstage Carrie:

Since 78- I don't want Adam to sign with Queen. Adam is in the drivers seat and I hope that he just goes out with Queen for the summer. Some of those Euro venues have 350,000 people . What a paycheck ! Then he would have even more worldwide sales of his own album. Anyway, Adam already told Queen " I would love to" when he was asked. He said it on Larry King when Ryan Seacrest was hosting.

A few things. This sorta comparison doesn't fly with me...it's sorta like the who's better, VH with Roth or VH with Hagar...and basing it on album sales.

Clarkson has had 6.5 years to sell 10.379 million records.
Underwood has had 4 years to sell 10.165 million records.

Clearly, Underwood is the highest selling artist when taking time in release as a factor....which would be appropriate. The next trailing artist is Daughtry and he's a good 5 mil back from underwood....

Also, another factor. Tour revenue. I'm just guessing here, but I suspect, when factored out for year-smoothing, that Underwood takes in more tour revenue per year as well.....

You can add 300, 000 more sales to that for last week's debut of Carrie's new album.

I would say Carrie leads because she crosses over a bit. I like all 3 of them, but that is my take on this.

Yeah, I think I'm going to call it the 'Tortuga' It bears enough connection to the pirates movies and pirate lore without invading anyone's trademarks.....

I think I'm going to pst a photo essay of the amps build...as I do it, so I'll keep you informed.
