Arnel and Neal Performs Lep Zeppelin's Rock and Roll

Postby Journeyman2122 » Wed Nov 25, 2009 11:44 am

From Blabbermouth:

JOURNEY Members Perform LED ZEPPELIN Classic At 'Katy Perry Rocks For Relief' Concert - Nov. 24, 2009
Arnel Pineda and Neal Schon of JOURNEY performed the LED ZEPPELIN classic "Rock And Roll" during their November 14, 2009 appearance at the "Katy Perry Rocks for Relief" concert at SM Mall of Asia Concert ground Manila, Philippines. Watch fan-filmed video footage of the performance below.

All net proceeds of the concert will be donated to the Philippine National Red Cross, the concert's sole beneficiary. The concert was also an avenue for people to drop off their donations as it housed booths specifically intended for it.

Arnel has also established his own foundation specifically to help street kids. He set it up to raise funds in the U.S. to help kids in the Philippines.

Great. These clips seems a little clearer and closer, but it may be the same ones. Arnel sounds and looks great. So nice to see Neal back on stage playing, looking fantastic. Really nice of him to fly over.

Love, love the energy on that Led Zep song. :D

There's a thread here awhile back discussing the possibility of an all cover bonus cd for the next album. It's a nice idea and they should definitely include that song.

A little bit of both. But AP does seem to have the ability to mimic people and their singing styles, so the band could do a good cover cd. Or better yet, do a cover cd in the style of Journey.
I like AP, and think he has talent, just not a huge fan of his like Perry, Augeri, Chalfant, JSS. They all seem to bring their own style to the band. AP so far seems to mimic Perry more than having his own style, music wise. On stage he like a worm in hot ashes or a dog with fleas, just trying to hard to be everywhere. And of course their is the English speaking issue I have more of a problem with of all of it. But I have not ruled AP out. This was his first cd, and it was written without him being there for input. So all is not lost on Journey for me yet, it just wasn't what I was hoping for.

This was obviously just a jam. Arnel did a good job of it though the verses were messed up. He definitely hits some killer notes in there. Awesome! He sure sings it better than Plant. Very cool.

As far as 'mimicking' Plant- I don't hear that at all. He sings notes in there Plant could never hit.

Love the interaction between Neal and AP.

The best person to EVER sing this song is Ann Friggin' Wilson.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I loathe covers.....create your own music. Playing one live here and there is okay, but covering a song and releasing it to radio is beyond cheesey.

I loathe covers.....create your own music. Playing one live here and there is okay, but covering a song and releasing it to radio is beyond cheesey.

I'll go with this, throwing a few bones to the crowd at a live show but unless you can totally reinvent the songs like Whitney Houston did, stay away from recording them (unless you've accomplished everything else in your career and just want to try something different ie. James Taylor, Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, etc.) I'm not too keen on Straight up covers though. It's like "What's the point?".

Creating your own music is a no-brainer and they are definitely shooting for that. :D

I agree that IF there will be a cover "bonus cd", that it should not be all straight up covers. Putting your own spin is what makes covers interesting and fresh.

This is just a suggestion, just in case they will require the band to make a bonus cd. Is there another choice for a bonus cd?

........oh wait, I know.....rerecord.

don't mind it at a show. Don't really want albums of them though. I was a bit pissed when Styx and Shaw/Blades went that route. Especially cuz there were Steely Dan and Tull covers. BLECH.

That would be cool. Would love to see a Journey covers CD highlight some of Arnel's strengths....Perhaps Journey covering Stryper, Heart, Whitesnake, and of course Zep. I think this is what Journey fans are waiting for.

Greeaaat. They'd better rename them The Zoo then. :x A song in concert is ok, an entire recorded album is a waste and bore...are you listening Tommy Shaw?

yep...Ann Wilson owns this song.
That said, gotta say that Gotthard's version (old-school Gotthard before they got huge) is pretty darn good also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIHLPpUBwHU. They do a pretty impressive Immigrant Song also from their live Made in Switzerland DVD from a year or two ago in front of a MASSIVE audience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tVhaKrD6Eg

don't really care for a Journey cover album either, but have to admit the Shaw/Blades concert in an itty-bitty bar with about 100 people was pretty impressive. They put on a good show.

I could see that as an Arnel Pineda solo album, but not Journey. Considering it seems to be mainly what he does when he's not with Journey, the idea may not be all that far-fetched.

That was painful to hear. Oooh there are some covers that should never be done by someone else and that is one of them. I do give Arnel an A+ for effort. :D
