Journey's Greatest Hits reaches 100 weeks on Billboard Chart

Postby Don » Mon Nov 30, 2009 4:36 pm

I stopped in a Wal-mart today. As I had to go somewhere outside L.A., I figured I would check on Journey stuff. Plenty of Revelation Discs, not to many Foreigner discs and about three Manila DVDs. They got them in a weird location and I almost didn't see them. Well since Journey's Greatest Hits is back in the Hot 200 chart, I thought I would check on those.

Low and Behold, all of them have a blue sticker on them but not with song titles listed. Instead it reads:

Includes the original master recordings, performed by the original members

Steve Perry - Vocals
Neal Schon - Guitars
Jonathan Cain - keyboards
Ross Valory - Bass
Steve Smith - Drums

Gregg Rolie - Keyboards
Aynsley Dunbar - Drums

I think that is some really creative marketing by Sony. The disc was 9 dollars and there were only three left. I don't know if that little sticker helped in sales but seeing as they did get back on the charts at #159, I thought it was rather clever for Sony to differentiate between the two line ups. Unfortunately,I didn't see any older albums . I was wondering if they'll get the sticker too. Sort of a Genuine Journey certification sticker I'd guess you could call it.

this is a good point. Today the casual Journey fan is gun shy. They want their "Dont stop believing" but after the Revelation slap in the face people dont know which version they will get. "For God sakes, all Im asking for is Steve fucking Perry's version!!!!" I can hear them yelling down the aisles...
In all honesty, if you werent as Journey savvy to all of their CD's and were looking for the Greatest Hits wouldnt you have to read the cd carefully before you bought, especially knowing about the new singer or even possibly having been bitten by the awful re-records????
Im so glad Steve Augeri never got sucked in with re-records.

It's been like that ever since Revelation came out, actually.
They started that right around the time they did the eco-friendly packaging, I believe.
But yeah, of course Sony is going to do that. It's all about marketing and sales. :D

I didn't notice it on the CDs at Target a few months back. Then again those were the old style plastic cases not these eco-packs or whatever you call them. Seeing as Target doesn't carry the domestic version of Revelation, could this be a Wal-Mart only Sticker?

Well, I shop at Target ALOT and GH is pretty much always on their endcap with the others in Sony's GH series (and Essential series too) so I've seen it alot. Same at Best Buy.

What the fuck is wrong with you? It's one damn song. Forcing Arnel down our throats? All those people who bought Rev. were lead to the store with guns to their heads and all those sold out gigs last summer had people showing up handcuffed and being escorted into the buildings by police officers. Denial sucks dude.

I don't know why I'm wasting my time doing this, but....

I know you look at it as a breach of your constitutional rights, but it's simply good business. Journey is trying to pretend Perry doesn't exist--same as EVERY band that has replaced a singer has done. Genesis, Styx, Van Halen, Deep Purple, Survivor, Chicago, etc. The list is endless. Sell the current lineup, NOT the earlier one. When Perry came aboard, they conveniently "left out" the part about the earlier cds, and the Fleischman episode. When Augeri came aboard, they tried to do the same.

That Wal-Mart deal is simply about royalties (ie $$$$$), and lots of it. The band is making a lot more money on a per unit basis selling that cd, than selling the Journey Greatest Hits cd. If it wasn't Arnel singing, it would have been Augeri or JSS singing those Greatest Hits. If the money was that good, it might have even happened if Perry stayed in the band. Given the option, most bands out there probably would have done the same. It's a business--you make all the money you can while you can.

Now, of course Sony is going to feel like the jilted ex-lover. They are going to do everything they can to keep their piece of the pie. That means doing everything they possibly can to convince average Joe Consumer to buy their greatest hits cd, not the Wal-Mart one.

To my knowledge, no band has EVER successfully replaced a singer 20 years after their popular period. From a new material aspect, Journey hasn't done it yet. That being said, no band that has ever tried to replace a singer 20 years after their big era has ever gotten as much publicity as Journey has. You don't see Foreigner getting on the Oprah show and stuff, do you?!? Business sense says you can make a LOT more money if you can get average fan to accept new singer as part of the band, so you push as hard as you can for that to happen. What I find amazing is how hard that is for some people to grasp.

It just so happens that for anyone to have Revelation they were also given a re-record package.....almost seems like brainwashing. And bro, if you think everybody who attended those concerts last summer was as up on Journey as this MR fanbase then you are in denial. According to local newspaper articles that covered the shows many were there only for the nostalgia, they had no idea who was singing and didnt care. The name JOURNEY and the classic songs sold out the shows.

the common denominator in both Revelation and GH being on the charts simultaneously is Schon/Cain.

How's GH+5 unreleased doing?

More confirmation that Journey sounds like Journey and it sells. It just works. If they sounded bad they wouldn't have the draw that they do. Granted, Pineda will probably not be the household name that Perry is but he carries the band well. I don't see how it could be any better at this stage of the game.

The problem Journey is having that keeps Perry from disappearing is their inability to hang their hats on a new song. DSB is dominating anything they have accomplished Post Perry. If you read my post linking the article form the Guardian (A British paper), even people over there in Britain associate that song with SP, and they were never strong Journey supporters to begin with.

This isn't because of Journey's sterling work. The American FM rock bandband –put together in 1973 by former members of Santana – have spent recent years gigging quietly around the world since their US chart pomp more than a quarter of a century ago. Don't Stop Believin's is in this week's charts because of its appearance on last weekend's X Factor. This week, baby-faced beauty Joe McElderry sang the song for the show's Rock Week, and in doing so spoke directly to "smalltown girls" living in "lonely worlds", many of whom picked up their mobiles and kept him in the contest. This gave Steve Perry's classic American narrative about finding hope in the streetlights a new, oestrogen-fuelled twist; it also inspired 7,000 viewers to find the original online, and click "buy".

Despite being a virtual recluse over the years, Perry has made himself readily available when it come to discussing anything about DSB. He's been on record more so than either Cain or Schon the last few years. It really does give the impression that the song is his baby.

That's a supremely lame reach that's been dubunked here about 1,000 times over SG.

The prerelease advertizing and packaging advertizing made it ABUNDANTLY clear, yet again 12 years and what? 2-3 albums after he last sang a note for Journey that perry was not the vocalist.

As pointed out above, Columbia started putting the sticker proclaiming (bogusly I might add as the only "original" members listed on that sticker were Schon, Valory, and Rolie. Were Journey as litigious and lawyered up as some ex-members, they could've EASILY forced those stickers to be pulled or fixed) redudantly that the '88 Greatest Hits were "original master recordings produced by the original members" as soon as it was announced that Revelation would include the material on disc 2.

Both parties made sure, for those that didn't catch on in '98 and after, the lineups of the products they were buying in 2008.

More confirmation that Journey sounds like Journey and it sells. It just works. If they sounded bad they wouldn't have the draw that they do. Granted, Pineda will probably not be the household name that Perry is but he carries the band well. I don't see how it could be any better at this stage of the game.

or that many people who bought it didnt realize in advance that this was Journey without Steve Perry.

Wow, you sure didn't have these issues all last year, and now all of a sudden you have a hate on for Arnel and saying they're buying it b/c they think it's Perry. Are you kidding me? Red13JoePa hit the nail on the head.

R13JP, thats completely true and I cant argue it with any facts other than many people I meet out and about had no idea whats been going on with Journey since 1984. Thats like assuming everyone knew Randy Jackson played bass in 1986. When I went and saw them in Atlanta back in August 2008 I actually met people in the smoking section outside the ampitheatre that thought they were coming to see the band from, and I quote "that Escape album..."

Actually, the labelling started when Augeri joined. Perry enforced a deal that required the members of the band to be listed so the consumer would know he was NOT in the band anymore. I think now that all contracts between the band and Perry are over Journey can stop that...so Sony picks it up.

Well, they did see the band from that Escape album, just not the same singer. They got the one that can still sing.
