Do you ever miss highschool friends?

Postby G.I.Jim » Sat Dec 05, 2009 1:47 pm

I don't know why I'm thinking about this tonight, but DAMN I miss talking to old friends from school! :( I don't know how many of you are in my situation, but I joined the Army right after high school and was gone. I left Oregon in 1991 for a few months for training, moved back, then left for good in 1992 and never went back. I got stationed here in Ft Jackson SC where I met my wife, and I've lived here ever since.

I stayed in touch with friends for a few years, but then we just drifted apart due to the distance. I just get depressed every time I think about the fact that I haven't seen ANY of my high school friends since probably 1995. :( I always wonder how they are, how they've changed, etc...

Am I alone here? I've made new friends over the years here, but it's just not the same. I don't really have a "Best" friend anymore like I did back then. DAMN I'm depressing myself here! I'll shut up now.... I'm drinking wine. :D

I miss none of my high school friends. I have nothing in common with them anymore. Does that make me cold?

As Lynn said, Facebook is what you need, Jimbo. I've reconnected with a BUNCH of people on there. It's a great site to do just what you're talking about. They have some fun games on there to play also.

No shit... soon after I registered on Facebook I had one of my old high school sweethearts hit me up. She said her husband was a drunk and wanted to know if I would meet her somewhere to reconnect. I told her no and then I told my wife about it so I wouldn't have any temptations hanging around in the closet. She emailed me a few months later and said her drunken husband found her Facebook messages and they divorced. She also said she is now hooked up with one of her other high school sweethearts. Go figure.

There's just a lot of shit that can go wrong if you're a younger person still establishing yourself in your career and all that. I don't ever put any stupid shit of me with 20 empty beers in front of me with my eyes closed, but I can't stop others from doing that. You can lock your page down pretty airtight, but it's not fool proof and you just never know who's looking. Luckily, I've searched myself pretty good on Google and nothing bad comes up... I don't really let people take my picture at rowdy parties or whatever, never did, not even in college.

But, the main reason is that most people just waste entirely too much time on there doing nonsense.

Im having breakfast with my best friend tomorrow morning. We met in the first grade. We lived together while in college and I love his kids like my own. He is more like a brother to me and I can talk to him about everything. The rest of my High School friends I can live without.

If it does, than I must be cold as well. The thought of reconnecting with people that all went in separate directions over 25 years ago is of no interest to me whatsoever.

It doesn't make you guys cold, not wanting to bother with those people - for me, I just never really got close to that many people in high school because, quite frankly, most of them were snobs. I wasn't really good enough for those crowds because I wasn't cool (meaning I was quiet and normal and not an obnoxious bitch) so you know what, screw them. That was the problem going to an all girls school. I can name two, only two, peole in high school that are still the same good, fun people they were then and are truly worth bothering with now - and they are both back in my life - one thanks to myspace about 4 years ago, and one thanks to facebook this year. They were the only people I ever actively sought out on the internet because I wanted to see them again. I found a number of other school friends too, but that's been just random e-communications except for one girl that I ran into in IHOP barely a week after she found me on facebook. LOL!! Weird world.

On some news show the other day they talked about how employers are checking out applicants' Facebook pages and also employees' Facebook, also. And one was fired due to what he put on it.

That's why you HAVE to set the privacy settings on those things as high as they will go. No one sees my bid'ness unless I let them. (I apply that to many areas of life, actually...)

Anyway , all they would ever find out about me is that I achieved Level 3 Wheat mastery in FarmVille. Clearly, I am a public menace.

Facebook is the ticket these days. I've reconnected to MANY of my old classmates, most of which I haven't seen SINCE high school

Well, I just spent the last HOUR on the phone with one of the only 2 people left alive that I ever hung out with in school, and it was awesome!!! :D He's really the best friend I had in high school other than the other 3 who are deceased, and it was awesome to catch up with him. :D He's still the same old guy I hung out with, and we spent time talking about how much trouble we got in when we were kids!

I haven't talked to him in YEARS and we're going to talk again tomorrow. The main reason we haven't is because every time I've tried in the past... his damn number was disconnected.

Here's something that was always awesome for us... we were born on the exact same day, just 2 hours apart! :D His dad was also born on the same day! Do do do do, do do do do (my best Twilight Zone impersonation!!!)  . We always spent our birthdays together, and it was pretty cool. I miss it! :(

I've never been hit on once in facebook. And you can delete people from your page so I don't see it as a problem. I have mine set on private. I have had a very positive experience and have connected with people I never thought I'd hear from again! It's great.

There's really only one friend from high school I want to hear about, and that's to find out if she's still alive and ok, as much as anything; my (then) best friend who I grew apart from when we hit our twenties; I found out several years ago she developed a heroin addiction, which would explain a few things back then that bugged the hell out of me. I don't know that I want her back in my life, and we certainly wouldn't be as close as we were back then (I've certainly changed a lot and I have to assume so has she) but I'd like to know if she got clean and is doing ok.

Now, friends from Uni/my early twenties is a different matter! Still keep in contact with nearly all of them.
