Interesting idea, would more suit a casual BBQ event rather than a fest.

Sounds great - this is in Chicago, right? Maybe we can make it to the backyard BBQ right after our show at the Chicago House of Blues!

Journey played the Backyard in Austin in 2005; I totally loved that place ... outdoors, giant live oak trees, funky Austin weird food and bev vendors. Closed it down due to encroachment from an outlet mall that got built next door. That was just what was needed ... one more outlet mall and one less live music venue. Sigh.

Andrew....

I have mixed emotions on the VIP thing. I'm sure there are people here that would dish out 2-300 bucks for these seats, myself included.

However, VIP tickets does very little to boost the popularity of the music and bring the genre itself back from the doldrums. I personally disagree that MR is experiencing a resurgence....In various pockets it is...but I don't see the economy supporting a healthy new 'scene'....

I would look to the infant years of musical festivals like Nearfest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEARfest). Nearfest has become one of the most prestigious prog music events in the eastern US. It started out small. The musical artists were accessible to the fans, they sold their CDs in the audience, it was sorta like a dead-head convention for progies. Its so popular that it sells out months in advance, every year.

Personally, I think the idea of a VIP ticket is a terrible idea...you want to make this music and the artists that produce/make it MORE accessible. not less accessible....The long term health and viability of the genre will benefit from such a mindset.

Go ahead and have different tiers of tickets...with the highest tier yielding the best seats...but I would try to find a way to make everyone who buys a ticket feel like they can have access to their artists.

One of the biggest detractors of this style of music are the artists themselves...most of them still think it's the 80s...and that they deserve a plush chinese wall seperating them from their fans. The fact of the matter is that this genre needs ambasadors....guys like Eric Martin and Kip Winger .... who seem incredibly approachable....

Seriously.....take a cue from Walter Elias Disney.....setup meet and greets for every artist. Don't make it a VIP thing. Let everyone get 12 seconds and a pic with their favorite artist......

Great post, Frank ... but I think he can do both. I'm quite certain that the day before acoustic show and meet and greet is strictly for $$$. The man needs a budget to fly these guys in and out them up, and the extra $$$ helps to entice them with some sort of perks. The only way to do so is with $$$. But I agree with you. Jim Peterik lines up every artist at a table after his World Stage show and you can walk by, say a few words, buy a CD, take a picture, shake a hand or just get your panties wet. And that's really cool.

Hey Frank - I agree with you and to some degree, you are getting a little ahead of things as I have not yet announced how things will work.

But in any rate - the VIP idea is to supply a smaller second acoustic show the night before and M&G for a smaller number of fans, but the Saturday main show will run exactly as it did with MRF1 - that includes artists hanging out with the crowd all day and chatting away + CDs for sale and whatever else I can conjure up.

Stay tuned!

No less than THREE big surprises almost locked in and I await word back from potential headliner.

Andrew,

Do you have the date set for MRF2? I'd really like to know ASAP as I would like to put in for vacation time at work, as I work most weekends. I like the VIP idea and I would most likely pay up to $250 for a ticket. I am really excited about the event,as I had a blast at the last one. If you need any help at all with anything Andrew let me know, I live in the Chicagoland area and would be willing to do anything to help you out for the event.

I'm with you on this one BJG, wish the suggestion would have come sooner.
If I may ask Wombat.....would it have made a difference if mentioned earlier on?

Question for the MR fans - any interest in Shooting Star performing at Andrew's MRF2?

A possible suggestion for the VIP package. Scrap the acoustic show and instead do a Q & A with Herbie Herbert. Even I would pay good money for that. Boy, do I have some questions to ask.

Seriously, no one fucking gives a shit anymore....

in truth, if this genre is going to survive then next 5 years, it needs to move beyond the fucking dinosaurs of the past. Journey is the king dinosaur. Seriously....

There's a reason why prog music is a thriving sub-genre right now...and they've been that way for 20 fucking years. There's a HEALTHY (with a strong emphasis on healthy) respect and admiration for the past performers like Yes, Rush, Genesis....

But the focus is on new, young, fruitful talent.

Sure you need some fucking ticket draws......a reason for the post-menopausal women to show up so someone like Jimmy Peterik or Jack Blades can sign their sagging 53 year old tit...

but the fact of the matter is that this fan base is as old as or older than the fucking performers. Get NEW, YOUNG blood into this thing...and make it something exciting again.

Oh, and for the record, tito. Cain's a fucktard! Just sayin! ;)

I'm curious about these bands... Have ANY of them had a platinum record Andrew? Other than Peterik (and I don't even know if HE's had one!). Just wondering...

At this point in time MRF2 is completely void of any band/artists connected in any way to Journey. There are so many KILLER bands out there... Got some surprises planned for MR die-hjards too :)
