Hey...I'm an ecumenical abuser. I think the Boston accent and NY accent is fucking DREADFUL. I'm simply not someone who has ever found a southern accent remotely "charming". It's obnoxious, and I can't understand what any of the fuckers are saying. Again, it's no better and no worse than the way people talk in the northeast. As far as I'm concerned, everyone should talk like those who are from the west coast...with no discernable accent, at all!

I knew it was time to leave within two weeks. It started with the local barber shop and me just innocently looking to get a haircut. Hearing people throw around terms like "nigger boy" (not a term I even heard growing up in the inner city), my neighbors asking our contractor if my family and I were "white folks", and 973 people asking which congregation we belonged to within 30 seconds of meeting us told me I was definitely in the wrong part of the country. That's to say nothing of the KKK retail store that is apparently thriving in South Carolina.

To all the fine folks on this board who are from the south, I'm sure your experience is a whole lot different, simply because that is home to you. Just like the road rage and everyone flipping everyone off in the Boston area doesn't phase me one iota, because it's home. You're blinded to a whole lot of things when it's your hometown. Charlotte NC wasn't my hometown (thank god), so it was quite easy for me to escape and get back to where people were judged on things other than the color of their skin or which god they prayed to! Snow is my cross to bear for living in my liberal home state

what part of Charlotte were you in?!?!? Yes, the church thing is common depending on location (more rural, yes...more city, no)--you have to remember it's the south. As far as the rest though....I've lived in NC for my whole life, and Charlotte is one of my least favorite places on the planet, but I've NEVER seen or experienced anything similar to that, nor heard of anyone else who did.

A good portion of Floridians don't have accents, except I do say ya'll.  The rest in smaller towns do have a much softer southern accent than Georgia, Alabama, etc, and then the rest have a Spanish accent or Haitian accent, and Miami add in the northern accent from all the transplants from New York.

Then you'd love mine. Southern accent, but a fast cadence. Throws everyone off.
I'm with you though on the pure Boston nasal "pahk the cah in hahvad yahd" accent. It's easily as bad as some of the southern mutations.

Yes, but how many people who live in Florida are actually native to the state? That answers your question right there!

We didn't get nearly as much snow... it came this way and the temp fell FAST.
It's absolutely unbearable out there right now. Negative wind chills and the whole works.
Winds are blowing seriously hard.

My fingers are STILL throbbing from making a 30 second run out to my car 1/2 hour ago. NOT exaggerating.

I have some advice for you...be VERY careful. New Orleans is a fun city with a lively party atmosphere, but it's also one of the most violent cities in America and always has been. It was the murder capital of America for 10 straight years, so don't go wandering off into any sketchy neighborhoods! Stay on Bourbon Street and you should be okay.

Yeah, I know man... I'm a bit worried about that just cause I don't know the area. I'm definitely gonna find a decent area and not stray far off the beaten path.

I went there for Halloween in 2006. The lesson that was learned that weekend was this: do not ask an odd drunk man wearing a kilt walking down Bourbon St. what is under said kilt. The reason not to do this: said drunk man is more than willing to show you what is under his kilt. (no, I wasn't the one who asked, but I got the show anyway  )

This lesson could just as easily apply to New Year's Eve.

Most people here own a snowblower and last January I kept driving past my house because the snow was so high I couldn't see the houses from the road - I would have to look down the driveway to make sure it was mine! When I was a kid, I used to race downhill, but once I hung up my skis, I stopped looking forward to the snow. And there are no such things as snow days cancelling anything east of Vancouver and the lower mainland up here!

Right now it's 5 degrees F and the other day it was 1.4 degrees F, but that isn't really very cold - at least we had blue skies and sunshine to make up for it. I think I would like living in Hawaii between November and March and coming home for Christmas!

Little bit different today, eh Sherri? I don't know what your snow removal service is like there - but just wait 'til you move here and have to deal with 3 feet of snow and street crud blocking your driveway (not to mention navigating all these lovely hills). I don't know how many times I wanted to throw my shovel at the snow plow as it went by. I hate the kind of snow we get here - usually wet and heavy. I never purchased a pair of winter tires all the years I lived in Calgary - all seasons worked just fine. Here you definitely need them! On the other hand, the winter temps are much milder than Calgary.

Thankfully we have a big snowblower, but I didn't think about my tires. I have all seasons which work well here - we complain about the snow removal, but it's actually very good compared to most. They let 3 feet of snow pile up on the roads?! Uh-oh. I didn't consider that I would need winter tires, but the hills there are wicked and icy! No more blue skies and sunshine here either - we've been getting snow all day and it's going to continue tomorrow. I knew it couldn't last. People still talk about the winter around 8 years ago when we had no snow on the ground until December 24th!

There are clearly racist people all over this country and in every corner of it. That said, I promise you that you won't find a KKK retail store ANYWHERE outside of the south! I believe that we're a racist country, and am not sure that will ever change. I've traveled to every part of this country, and in my opinion, racism is a bit more overt in the south than any other place I've been to. It's definitely the only place I've ever been where complete strangers use the word "nigger" out in public, during casual conversations. For what it's worth, my father was also very racist (he's been dead for 25+ years) and was as Bostonian as it gets. Again, there are people like this everywhere, but I've never found it to be part of the culture the way it was when I lived in the south. For the record, those of you who live in Florida don't count, because that's not really "the south", in spite of its geographic location. Florida probably has far more people from other parts of the country living there than they have native Floridians. I don't even think people who live north of Florida in places like GA, NC, and SC consider Florida "The south"!

actually Florida is more southern from the state line south to Ocala and all points east and west than parts of Georgia and Alabama. It actually starts going more "northern" from Orlando down. But there are some country boys around Lake City and Gainesville Florida that I wouldnt recommend crossing if you didnt have a confederate flag on your vehicle (preferably your 4 wheel drive chevy) somewhere.

Actually it's not that hard to get a gun on a plane at all. You just have to have it in a locked case in a checked suitcase with bullets separate. You have to tell them when you check the luggage so they can put a note inside the bag. The bigger question would be if you actually can carry a concealed weapon legally in New Orleans.

Well, Orlando has it's share of Good 'ol boys FOR SURE! Confederate flags galore in my area. But they see it as a symbol of the war they still can't get over but it's taken as racist. That's always the thing that confused me, being a northern transplant here. All my years in the north and NO ONE talks about the civil war. Except for what you learn in school, it's ancient history. The south is STILL living it. I don't think they'll ever get over it

Oh, and venture 30 miles outside of ANY city anywhere in Florida you will find PLENTY of native Floridians. I actually have a few that are good friends  They're not extinct you know! Northerners stick to the major cities and the coastlines.

Well no, they clear the roads pretty well, but when the snowplows come down our street they leave 3 feet of the cleared stuff piled up in front of our driveway - usually about 5 minutes after we've shovelled in the morning - then we have to start all over again so I can back my little car out! I think it was 7 years ago you're talking about - we moved here that December, thought we'd died and gone to heaven (grass was still green early December, no snow). I'd like winters like that all the time!

We gave in this year and my husband put a plow on his truck......the last storm was so much more pleasant at this house...he was not out in the driveway swearing at the snow blower....he plowed the driveway in about 15 minutes and was one happy guy!
