actually... it was the "what they have now" line that tweaked the arnel radar.
Anyway... moving on.

Depends on the tour.
For me, Augeri really hit his stride during 'Under the Radar' tour in 2002.
He held the audience spellbound in the palm of his hand.
Were the vocals flawless?
Probably not.
In fact, I distinctly recall him ducking high notes and using it as a lame opportunity to introduce bandmembers.
But he wiggled around that stage like he owned it, and the band was having a blast - for the first time since reforming, it seemed like the ghost of Steve Perry had been fully excised.
Subsequent tours, however, featured an Augeri that was just going through the motions - much like the band itself.
I haven't seen Arnel live yet.
I'd still prefer Augeri, flaws and all, but realize there's a frontman learning curve that needs to be taken into account.
From what I've seen, Arnel just keeps getting better.

I think we may all be in for a surprise.
He's said before that he considered himself more Robert Plant-ish than Perry-ish before the Journey gig came along; he also mentioned at Firefest last year to some of us talking in the bar that his solo stuff seemed to him to be coming out pretty different from either Tall Stories or Journey.
Bring it on, whatever it is; I couldn't be happier for him, and can't wait to be there -- front row.

I have heard him say that many times, and when listening to Tall Stories you hear a little more that in his vocal style. But he sang differently for Journey. And everything I have heard him do since Journey still sounds, to me, like his Journey voice. I truly want HIS voice not his "Journey voice".
I am really looking forward to a solo CD from Steve and if he does a club tour in the US I will make every effort to make it out to see him. He did struggle with Journey. In the beginning he seemed timid, it took him forever to "warm up". Under The Radar seemed to be Steve and Journey at their best. Then the strain of the catalog and (I assume) the singing not in his natural voice really started to affect his vocals. Please Stevie, share YOUR voice again!

I don't think his own songs with Journey were out of his range. They were very well suited to his voice. More so the Perry songs were tough on him.

Agree, wouldn't be the same without Neal though.
My list:
Higher Place
Signs of Life
To Be Alive Again
Livin To Do (absolutely NOT the same without Neal)

I agree I love Livin To Do and without Neal...I don't think it would even be close.

Living to Do, what a song. What an intro with Neal. I am loving Arrival on this cold, rainy and gloomy day at home.

He looks better in yellow than FrigaScarabGator wrote:although I didnt see the final tour for him I did see him numerous times in the mid 2000's. I thought he was great on stage. How do you figure that he doesn't have U.S. fan support, but he has enough European fan support for a full European Tour? That makes no sense. Journey toured WAY less in Europe during his tenure than they did the States.
Two reasons....
#1....US is much more spread out, where the UK is compact. He may have a fanbase here in America, but they aren't near each other to make many gigs profitable--and there is a huge traveling expense to get between the markets that may have enough support. For example, he might be able to play New York City and Chicago, but couldn't draw the crowds in Buffalo/Pittsburgh/Cleveland to make the traveling between NYC and Chicago break even.
#2....if it is Frontiers Records, they have things set up in the UK, not the US. They could put Augeri on a tour with someone who can help draw crowds (ie Danny Vaughn, JSS, Jimi Jamison, etc). You have to remember--Journey does have a fanbase in the UK/Europe. They just didn't exploit it until recently. UK is pretty compact also, so the traveling expense between gigs isn't all that much. That means it's much easier to make money on a tour.
Of course, all this is dependent on Augeri doing a melodic rock album. If he goes down the Led Zeppelin (or other) path, I doubt Frontiers Records would be all that interested, as it's too far from their target market.

He could totally pull in a HUGE crowd in Cleveland, Pittsburgh... well let's just say music fans around here pretty much suck anymore, and pretty much gravitate towards whatever drivel corporate radio throws in their faces. Sad to say, but most good concerts around here get a pretty shitty turnout anymore. The difference in turnouts for Frontiers between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, for example, is absolutely astounding. Also, turnover rates for venues seem to be at an alltime high around these parts, closing left and right. I also keep hearing about, but haven't confirmed, that there's a crazy "amusement tax" or something of the sort that apparently keeps many artists away from Pittsburgh. I am a very sad fan of good rock and metal here indeed. Almost every show I have to do at least a few hours of traveling anymore. For Augeri, though, I would probably travel pretty damned far!!!

Higher Place is my favourite of all the songs Journey put out after ROR and All the Way would sound great as an acoustic. If SA doesn't get to Canada, I hope one of you guys lucky enough to see him live post a few clips on YouTube!
