Music Version of "Jumped the Shark"

I think we all know that "jumped the shark" is the TV phrase that refers to the point in which a long-running series has an epsiode or plot twist so decidedly awful that the show's decline can be traced to that point before it heads south and off the air. I've never heard a music version of this, when a band reaches the point of having "jumped the shark" - either with a particular album, style/sound change, member change, tour, etc., and since this is Melodic Rock, I think we should coin the phrase - put in your ideas and then when we have a Top 5, we can do a poll.

In honour of Steven Tyler, my suggestion is "Fell Off the Stage".

Well, I think that would be more Milli Vanilli/Ashley Simpson since the mainstream doesn't know about Journey and so many pop artists today lipsynch their concerts. Pulling a Milli Vanilli seems more for getting caught with the tape running. :lol:

Maybe there hasn't really been a definitive event yet for a major group that most people would identify with - or it has to happen really publicly. Who is playing the halftime show at the Superbowl this year?

Milli Vanilli's problem wasn't so much the tape but the fact that they weren't the actual ones doing the singing.

That's true. I thought of Aerosmith because falling off the stage and ending the tour seems to be signalling the end, or at least the downward spiral, of a legendary group. Unless they regroup and put out an inspired album! Music seems to have the rarity that as long as the artist or original members are still around, there is always hope for a new album and a comeback up to a point. Perhaps rock music hasn't reached an age limit yet, but in just over 3 years all of the Stones will be in their 70s and one will be past 80. If they tour, that might just be odd to watch, but I guess we'll jump off that bridge when we get to it!

Now THAT is a new phenomenon negatively impacting a lot of older bands - the Reality Singer/YouTube discovery. Even though the singers are good, having a TV contest to put an unknown in as a replacement for a legend just seems wrong unless the singer goes from the contest to have a successful solo career first and earns a place in that league on their own, like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, or Jennifer Hudson. JD Fortune in INXS is an example and as good as Adam Lambert was on AI, if he went directly to Queen and it didn't work out, I doubt they would recover from that. It kills their credibility.

As for YouTube, Journey has been doing pretty well with Arnel, so I would like to see what happens with their next album and tour and see how it works out. He has had only 2 years to go from singing in a small club to trying to command a huge stage in front of thousands on a long tour, so I think it would be fair to hold off judgment and see how Arnel does on the next tour. He'll know what to expect and has time off to rest and develop his stage performance, so there won't be any excuses next time. Are there any other YouTube singers fronting major bands?

Gods, I'll never forget the harsh lashing my eyeballs took the first time I saw this video. Amazing how, even as a teenage lad, I knew his career was headed straight for the dumper after this video.
