I don't think we are supposed to get it. There are roughly 50 million senior citizens, U.S. and British Common Wealth combined. Those people may only buy one CD a year, if that. I think in Susan's case, they are the one's getting it. That might also explain why physical albums sales are trumping digital download sales, which is completely against the market trend, as you are dealing with a consumer who might not be as sophisticated as the younger generation when it comes MP3s and such.

Marketing execs are always trying to break into the AARP demographic as there is money to be made there, as evidenced by all the pledge funds generated by PBS every year.

As lethargic as Perry's solo work might tend to be, they are still intended for a demographic that is completely over saturated with mediocre offerings, while Boyle seems to be tapping into an audience that is a bit underserved by todays music industry.

She's Cinderella in sensible shoes ...

She's learning disabled, not young, not skinny, not conventionally attractive, put her life on hold to care for ailing parents, suffered a lifetime's worth of ridicule and abuse right up to Simon's rolling eyes ... and now she's kicking ass and raking in the dough ... how can you not love this story? I may buy the damn CD just on principle.

We have acknowledged Arnel's life trials that he went through in his younger days. In Boyle's case, her whole existence seems to have been just one long hardship until that very moment when she opened up her mouth for the first time on X-Factor.

I don't know. It's a double-edged sword. Many highs but many emotional lows for her b/c she can't handle the strain too much and seems to have a lot of meltdowns. I think her happiest times were with her mom and dad, and they're gone, especially her mom, who believed in her. They were her anchor and happiness. Well, and her cat she loves. but I'm so happy that she is feeling so much love from the public over this CD. Eventually, in several years, it will all die down and she will live a nice comfortable life and sing here or there when she feels like it and have a lot of respect and affection from the people in her hometown.

No doubt. She went from one extreme to the other with no buffer zone to soften the impact, hence her little breakdown. I think one reason Simon was pretty gracious with her contract was because he didn't want to be seen as taking advantage of a emotionally fragile and slightly mentally challenged person.

Stockton, you beat me too it! This just reeks, especially when there are deserving artists out there barely selling any units at all. The music industry is at an all time low!

It's better than a Britney Spears computerized, auto-tune CD, no real recognizable voice, hitting multi-platinum. At least, the lady has a stunning voice, and beautifully delivers her songs, even if they are covers. I don't own the CD b/c some of the songs aren't my style, but there's an audience out there for her.

a couple of things, and i'm sure the resident vocals experts will back me on this:

There are people with great raw vocal talent that don't know HOW to sing.

A great voice is only the first part. and two separate issues. Myself, I have a horrible, shit-ass, ear-splitting voice. but you know what? I know how to sing. I sing along to music all the time in my car and I can match the pitch(I'm guessing this is what I'm doing) almost 100% of the time. I don't know how I do it, but I do.

Susan has a great voice, knows how to sing....but sings lame-ass songs.....same with Mariah Carey, Whitney....and most of the so-called divas....disposable music that will hold no legacy other than units sold....

Any and every graduate from Ai will become a footnote on my epic ass!

The people buying this probably have a vastly different opinion of who is a deserving act. Which melodic rock artist is losing a sale because someone is buying a SuBo CD?

Whitney Houston - disposable music to your ear. Many of her songs hold a musical legacy that will be heard for generations and generations. My mom would say Boyle's CD is beautiful and metal rock is noise. There's different types of music for everybody, let's be objective.

I just saw on a late nite show repeat that Tony Bennett got a great record deal again with Sony or somebody, whomever he has been with, and he said he is so appreciative after all these years to still have that kind of faith by the music industry.

It's a silent fanbase who speak with their dollars instead of their mouth.

An 80 year old Andy Williams did a sold out tour of the UK and Japan that netted him around 18 million dollars. These same markets are embracing Boyle also.
