Has anyone ever played with a Keytar?

What's the best one to buy if you know how to play a keyboard already?

Why on earth would you want a Keytar? Even as a keyboardist myself, I realize how cheesy they make you look! JC even looked goofy as hell playing his. Not trying to be an ass here, but just giving you my perspective on it. What's the story behind this? :D

That's pretty much the only new one out there on the market, and it's not cheap! They run $1200. If you really want the link, here it is...

That's because he can't wail like Jan Hammer did on his in the '70s.

I'd be shocked if anyone admits ever playing one or even setting eyes on one.

Seriously. One look at Friga in the 80s with one of those things strapped to him and it's enough to give even the most homosexual of men the heebee-geebees.

Talk about a bunch of shut-ins on this site!

So nobody here has ever seen Jan Hammer, Chick Corea, Rick Wakeman (or his son Adam), Edgar Winter, etc., play a remote/portable, or "keytar"???

He's not the first, and he didn't invent it, he just bought one because he thought he'd look cool like Jan Hammer, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. Oops! Guess not.

I guess by the logic some of us are using it safer not to play a guitar either. Friga has been spotted playing one of those too.

I think the concept of the keytar is somewhat cool as it lets the player get out in front of the crowd. The problem I have is how gay they look. They should have made them a bit more masculine and professional looking. It looks like you're running around with something that should say "Fisher-Price" on the fucking side.

So you're waiting for the keytar equivalent of a B.C. Rich Warlock or Flying "V" or something? Something a little more "metal"?

Lol ... no. They've already been labeled "gay" and that'll probably never go away due to the atrocious style of them in the 80's. But, yeah, what you suggested would have been cool back then.

I think they'd still hold the 'nerdy' stigma even with a different look. It just seems like one of those doofy novelty instruments where you go "Oh would you look at that, it's like a guitar... but a keyboard... a KEY-tar! LOL" and then forget about.

Most keyboad players dont what to leave the saftey of their keyboards to to go out out in the crowd when the girl are slobberying over the lead singer or guitar player. Kinda like when Gregg Rolie was standing on his stool during Lovin Touchin. keyboard playersw need to stay with their instruments, dont look like a dick and embarrasse the rest of us

Eric (Ragno) played one. It's one with strings instead of keys. Very cool. He wrote a song called "So Wrong" of the China Blue album with it.
