I admit it. I'm out of the closet. I loved this song live this year.

Jana you are not alone.

Chile - Open Arms = 4,155,556 views :D

The clip in my sig is from the actual concert I was at. And I've heard it so many times b/c I've followed a lot of the clips at different concerts for years and hearing it live, and, of course, Open Arms is always one of them every time. So I say I'm sick of the song and would rather hear something else live, but then live in concert this year I got totally swept up just like everyone else in the audience by Arnel's great performance, I admit it, plus the new haunting intro by Neal.

We all know about Open Arms getting to #2 on the Hot 100.

Only Mariah's cover actually charted internationally. Ironically, her version was never released as a single in the U.S.

After 20 million sales of DayDream, the album that Open Arms is included on, Steve and Jon aren't saying ughh.
Another album Open Arms is on, Heavy Metal went platinum. Add in The Last American Virgin soundtrack along with multiple Japanese compilation albums, this song has over 50 million sales. If George Michael can be a millionaire off of just the royalties alone for Last Christmas , I can't imagine how much Cain and Perry have banked off of this one song.

I still couldn't believe that Open Arms did not reach #1 on the Hot 100. It was very very very very popular back then.

Somehow it got stuck at #2 for six weeks,

first behind this song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqDjMZKf-wg

and then behind this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3T_xeoGES8

These videos were very popular and as MTV had just started up that year, they probably helped propel these tunes to #1

Well, from what I hear Steve Perry has the first dime he ever earned, and Mr Cain isn't doing to bad for himself either. He could RETIRE this coming year and never have to work again, though I'm sure that's NOT what would happen.

Sad, as Neal probably has to keep squandering his fortune on all his mistakes. Rocker's ex's ain't cheap ya know.

Neal's a big boy...I'm sure he knew exactly what he was doing. A grown man (even for one that's "not the sharpest tool in the drawer") should know the score.

LOL. Yeah, Ohhhhhh Kay

I hate to say this...and I'm sure people on all sides of the fence will agree with me. if money were no object, Neal Schon would not be in Journey right now.

Journey is his job...he needs it for a steady income stream to pay off the five ex-wives. Musically speaking...and only musically speaking, if money were no object, he would be following his muse and doing far more artistically interesting stuff (to himself)....

You're free to disagree. I just don't believe Neal would be continuing with Journey if he had an income that allowed him to maintain a certain lifestyle. I really think he'd be doing 'other' things musically....and it's based on nothing more than what I sense his attitude is towards Journey both circa 1990s and now. It's a job. It's an income.

Does he have fun doing this? Perhaps. I don't doubt he enjoys playing to 51 year old women who's last few drips of vaginal juices are flowing, thanks to Neal being on stage in front of them. Imagine the power he must feel...but lets get serious.

Are you going to want to play DSB for 40 years or are you going to want to extend your artistic reach beyond your comfort zone. Anyone that writes music knows that you can't let yourself get stale....There's a reason why Neal involves himself with a great deal of outside-of-journey musical projects. I think, given the chance...he would do nothing but that. But invading Mike Carabello performances in a shithole bar in downtown San Fran isn't going to pay the bills.

If you give Neal the choice of complete artistic freedom to do whatever he wants vs. Journey....he'll take the former. The later requires complete financial freedom.....he doesn't have that. I'm not sure Cain does either, despite what some have claimed in this thread. But I do know that 1-2 divorces is a hell of lot lighter a financial burden than 5.

Neal said last year in an interview he could retire if he wanted to, but that he has no desire to. Neal likes to keep busy all year. No matter what anyone says, side projects couldn't keep him busy enough. Every band that's not new has to keep playing their catalogue mixed in. Let's face it, every profession, no matter what it is, becomes a job in many respects and routine. They wrote a new album and are getting ready to do another one, so probably makes him happy creatively. Now if he would just do that solo album he talked about.

Believe me when I say this ... Neal has all the coin he'll ever need. It's just a convenient excuse to slam the guy because he's out doing what he loves to do. But Frank does bring up a good point as far as Neal wanting to do more artistic stuff. I think it's just not worth playing for peanuts at his age when he can haul in a five digit paycheck for a night's worth of work. Besides, nothing's gotta be more fun to him than playing songs Nostrildamus helped make famous while the human rain delay sits at home and laments with his cats.

Does Perry have one child only? Since he already signed over royalties to Swafford for "Oh Sherrie", not really anyone else left to inherit his cash. Like MJs kids, in the event of his death, Perry's daughter will get to keep collecting those checks until they hit the 75 year copyright mark, I believe.
